I like WW's magic system quite a lot, even though it can be a bit cheesy at times. However I don't think it would be easy to implement in a game. Not because of all the paradox/backlash stuff, but because in that system, the limit is your imagination.

There was a Shadowrun game on the Sega Genesis a looooooooooong time ago, the people who made it handled the Shadowrun style of magic quite well.

 

Go play it and see.

I've played it. Too bad the game featured twitchy arcade combat, random generated quests that equated to moving around a small map and interacting with cardboard-cutout NPCs.

 

Decking and magic were handled INCREDIBLY well for an old Genesis game. If you took half the Genesis game and merged it with the SNES game, you'd have a great Shadowrun game.

Seriously. In the Genesis game there are six locations on a map. I go to my Fixer, and he randomly generates one of four possible quests, such as pick-up, kill, escort, or something else. I walk around this really small map and shoot at things. Then I get karma and another randomly generated quest.

 

It was like a precursor to Diablo, with much nicer RPG mechanics behind it.

Morrowind has an awesome magic system. A trillian times better than Forgotten Realms games magic systems. You can be far more creative with it.

 

There are two flight scrolls at the begining of the game if you found them. I cast a walking on water spell and seconds before it ran out, I cast one of the flight spells and and aimed for water so didn't die on landing. It was fun. I've done so many other crazy things with the magic system in morrowind. It's great when you get to the point of creating your own spells.

Yeah. You can do Fire, Lightning, Cold, and Poison spells, and that's about it. Big deal. Oh, yes, you can fly, too. But it doesn't really matter because any spell which is not totally crappy will drain your mana reserve in one shot. Against the more powerful demons you won't do jack with magic unless you are a potion spammer. Yes, 'a trillion times better than FR games magic systems' indeed. :blink:

Hilarious. Funny. But, not true. Outisde of POR2, the mdoern D&D games have have had 200+ spells and you can do a lot with it. The D&D magic system itself is even furtehr than that since you have basically unlimited spells inclduing your peasly flying.

Well obviously "a trillian" is an exaduration, and I was refering to the video games not the PnP game. However in regards to your point of spell numbers, you could create your own in Elder Scrolls.

Both have great systems, and perhaps which one you prefere is up to you. However I do not think that Elder Scrolls had a totally f*cked up magic system like 213374U suggested.

Those that don't like Morrowind seem to be those who don't have the patience to deal with the skill progression system.  MMORPGs have an even slower skill progression system.

 

And since Morrowind plays more like a singler player MMORPG than .hack, I think it's a fair comparison.

 

If you like MMORPG's, you may like Morrowind.

 

I actually liked Morrowind. I had a blast playing with my kajjit monk ^_^ The game was just too big for me to start over, as I always want to keep creating new characters by the time I reach Balmora to see what else I can do, hehe.

A good system, but it had it's flaws and limitations.

 

And I should know, I only play full blown mages in morrowind and have stressed the system to it's limits. :-

but fallout - wow, that was a great game. same for fallout 2, you can do just about anything you want in that game - including becoming a pornstar...that was great. :-

Yep. As I said, you can also fly. :)

And yes, I suffered the experience of playing Morrowind entirely, both expansions included. Only after comparing the fighting prowess of my first character (a Paladin) to the craptacular performance of my second (some brand of mage) I fully realized how badly broken the magic system was.

So, what's the use of a virtually infinite number of spells, none of which are cost-effective? You could craft your own spells alright, but as I said, they were useless in true combat. For the stronger spells, you had to carry a ton of potions to restore your mana. As for the weaker ones, you had to spam them a zillion times to kill a ****roach. Sucked big time if you ask me.

 

As I said elsewhere, a brilliant idea, a poor implementation.

 

EDIT: WTF? They filtered out any of an order or suborder (Blattodea syn. Blattaria) of chiefly nocturnal insects including some that are domestic pests? What gives? :unsure:

Actually a mage in morrowind (especially an enchanter) is downright lethal.

 

Once I discovered the joys of enchanting, I played Morrowind as a FPS.

Magic is incredibly useful in Morrowind. These are just some of the spell effects I've come across.

 

You could:

 

Drain attributes (7)

Drain health, magicka, fatigue

Drain skill (27)

Resist all of the above

Restore all of the above

Fortifty all of the above

Damage all of the above

Fire/Frost/Shock/Poison damage

Calm Humanoid/Creature

Command Humanoid/Creature

Levitate

Chameleon

Invisibility

Fly

Telekinesis

Mark

Recall

Open

Lock

Summon Creature

Summon Bound (Sword, Shield, etc.)

Sanctuary

Paralyze

Water Walking

Water Breathing

Cure Common Disease

Cure Blight Disease

Cure Paralysis

Cure Poison

Light

Frost/Fire/Shock/Poison Shield

Almvisi's Intervention

Divine Intervention

 

That's about 222 different base effects just off my memory, and I'm not even that far into the game. Multiply that by 3 (yourself, touch, ranged), and then 5 (different casting triggers). Multiply that by the 10,000 different possibilities of power.

 

That's 33,300,000 spell effects you can create. Did I mention that when creating a spell, potion, or magic item that you can mix spell effects? I don't know the max, but I've seen items with three effects. Take 33 million to the 5th power and see how many custom spells or items you can make with the magic system.

 

Now compare that to a D&D magic system with something like 400 spells.

You need to balance that by the duration and magika cost factors though.

 

Big "impressive" spells or those with multiple affects tended to be really expensive and not last long.

Yeah. I forgot duration factors. We may be in the billions of possible spells.

 

Multiple affect spells got really expensive. Powerful spells with a strong static effect could be expensive. I'm level 12, and I'm not even a dedicated mage. I'm playing a custom class I simply call "Avatar" based off the Avatar from the Ultima series. I'm playing all three guilds at once, and trying to master stealth, combat and magic all at once. So far, I'm doing a pretty decent job of it. I'm not roleplaying with an Avatar's virtues however, since I'm in the Thieve's Guild. But I don't murder anyone, and I try to be a good guy.

 

They leave far too many valuable items out where I can steal them.
