The TV and Streaming Thread: Enough episodes for syndication

The Boys, whatver, episode whatever: Whatever.

Honestly, I... I mean being behind the times on satire when scripts are from two years ago is understandable, given how fast the political landsacpe of the US has flushed itself down the crapper,

lol, or rather... not

episode came out this week with Homelander having visions and styling himself as a new Jesus would be hilarious, if it weren't for the real world Homelander having done the same a couple of days earlier,

but the weird pacing of the episodes and the way concepts are introduced and then discarded almost immediately with no payoff is just plain bad entertainment, and now we've introduced a new thing into the show that everyone goes chasing after because why the hell not, we have eight episodes left to wrap everything up, so let's just spend that time on... not wrapping anything up and not moving anything into place for a decent payoff at the end.

Sheesh.

No mind to think. No will to break. No voice to cry suffering.

The Pitt finale:

Hm. I feel like they were trying to duplicate some of the tension re: a certain chr. ethics confrontation of the 1st season and it didn't work quite as well.

They also didn't really address/conclude Robby's big "issue" (job related depression) of the season - to be fair, all the docs on the show suffer from at least some level of stress burnout, it's kind of a show-topic - although it wouldn't surprise me at all if the 3rd season starts with:

Robby having adopted a baby to give new non-doctor motivation/meaning to his life.

So final episode fell a little flat, for me. Still decent tho. I'll still check out season 3, at least.
At this point I kind of want more focus on the other main-side chrs. I know Robby is the leader but the dynamics of at least of a couple of the other regulars would be more interesting to develop.

Still gaming with my 9900k/2080ti/32 ram. One day I suppose a game may inspire me to finally upgrade. Maybe.

Finished Picard s3. The last few episodes took me a little while...

Generally I don't mind the Borg storyline. That starfleed command thing was stupid, though. The moment I saw that admiral japping about "all ships will be in a forced formation, bla bla" you can imagine me doing the Picard-Facepalm. It's just a stupid idea for so many reasons, but ofc we have a Borg storyline, so it felt even more stupid.

All things considered, though, I kinda agree with red letter media that s3 is not a bad Star Trek movie. At least better than the last movies we had.

With the ending I'm wondering if they were planning a spin-off with Jack that then never happened anymore? Isn't almost all of the new Star Trek stuff getting canned? Maybe they shouldn't have made so many bad shows...

1 more day until From s4 e1, I can't wait 🎉

Also the creator has announced there will only be one more season after 4 and then the series is over. 5 seasons is a good enough run. I would have preferred 7 seasons but it is what it is. At least we will get all the answers

https://www.boredpanda.com/from-creator-explains-why-series-is-ending-as-season-4-release-date-nears/

"During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, creator John Griffin explained the decision to conclude the series.

He revealed the story was always intended to last five seasons. However, Griffin and the creative team briefly considered a sixth chapter, hoping the story would tell them when it was time to end.

He said, “There was a fair amount of soul-searching. But we all came to the realization that if we made that sixth season, it would be for us, because it’s just too hard to say goodbye.”

I finished off the last series I wanted to watch on HBO/Max,* so I switched over to Apple TV (which has a Roku channel now!). HBO/Max has some really good series (e.g. I enjoyed The Last of Us, Warrior, Banshee, Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, Euphoria, and... Gossip Girl 😉), but it's a bit more pricey than Apple (which is an odd thing to say, I suppose). I've been enjoying the Foundation series, which has some amazing sets and a cool story. Man, they must have spend a ton of money on this series. Plus I'm going to enjoy some of the MLS games, particularly the Seattle Sounders.

Now for Man C. vs. Arsenal match...

Watched Ponies. Or I suppose it should really be PONIes. US spy widows try to find out what happened to their husbands in Moscow in the late 70s, shenanigans ensue.

It can't really decide whether it wants to be a serious take, or a silly one; the premise itself is both very silly and quite serious. They'd never be allowed to become spies. One of the widows cannot speak Russian, yet spends half her time wandering around Moscow (meeting people who all speak English), an untrained woman can wander into multiple KGB facilities, the KGB apparently never does any sort of basic background checks. Then again, nor does the CIA, when the plot needs it. Yet there's a high bodycount with some 'dark themes' and the other spy stuff feels authentic enough. Generally. Sending the (black) section chief to do basic surveillance in Belarus seems a little unlikely since he's important and quite possibly the only black man in Belarus in the 70s. The overall effect is half Jonny English, half The Americans. If it were 100% Jonny English with a couple of women failing successfully through everything it'd be one thing, if it were two highly competent trained women being highly competent and trained it'd be another; as it is it's an uncomfortable mix at times.

Shame the plot isn't half as good as The Americans though. It has the problem that if there are two options for someone being a traitor, and one of them has a big neon sign over them pointing an arrow anyone familiar with scripting will think it's option 2. And it is. And, to be fair, being half as good as The Americans is hardly an insult given how good that was. Overall, worth watching and potentially very good if they can iron out the crinkles and decide on the tone better.

The guy playing Vasiliev could have doubled for Ignatenko from Chernobyl.

Don't think there is a single ST show in active development now. Not only that, every series ended before it was supposed to/ got cancelled, except Picard. Looks like even the Captain Kirk spin off from Strange New Worlds is canned, and if that's gone it's hard to see anything else getting the green light.

Any of you fans of Yellowstone? If so, what're your thoughts on the new Marshals spin-off?

Watched the first episode of Marshals and didn't even finish it. Looks like generic pew pew action slop.

The entire Yellowstone series is one of my favorite series of all times

I watched 3 episodes of Marshalls and stopped, its not the same writers or creatives and its bland and boring

But you must watch 1883 and 1923 if you haven't watched them. They prequels to Yellowstone and they excellent, on par with Yellowstone

Unfortunately, they need to be available on network/cable for me to watch. That's why I thought of giving Marshals a go, but then I saw some reviews which say essentially the same things you all are saying. 😞

I've really been enjoying the sci-fi on Apple TV. For All Mankind, Foundation, and Severance are all good quality series IMO, although quite different in tone.

Law and Order season 21 via netflix - I guess they rebooted this series after a 10+ year hiatus. Still has Sam Waterson as the small-scene head honcho legal, although not a huge presence. Anyway, I haven't decided if the show is simply worse/more uneven than the early seasons of original series, or if it's because I'm too familiar with that whole routine. It's ok. I might watch ssn22 as the "on while making dinner" show.

Most of the L&O series I liked the first 2 seasons a lot, then would forget all about them. L&O:SVU has been on forever I guess, surprised to see it was still going, lol. My favorite is still L&O:Criminal Intent, because of D'Onofrio's semi-Holmes detective. I think CSI:Las Vegas is still the only crime/investigation drama where I lasted 8+ seasons. When Season 9 started with a certain chr. being killed off, and I read W. Peterson was also quitting soon, I quit watching.

Still gaming with my 9900k/2080ti/32 ram. One day I suppose a game may inspire me to finally upgrade. Maybe.
