Ukraine Conflict - Continues

An interesting tweet concerning non-combat related deaths of Russian soldiers in Ukraine. As stated, alcohol consumption in Russia, and the position of alcohol in Russian culture, is really something else, as the saying goes: apparently, excessive alcohol consumption may explain about half of all premature deaths in Russia[*].

Funny headline, I forget Ukraine is master of us all.  I don't know why there's such a fuss over it, is a monthly rotation and I don't think they get any fancy powers or such and even if they did, the vetoes exist

As president they will call up council meetings and select most of the agenda that council will address in their meetings. And their job is to oversee any crisis and keep other council members up to date. So council will probably not even talk about the Ukraine's situation.

Sometimes you really  make me laugh, good one  There is no way to stop Russia legally getting the rotational chair because its  by  design and its only for 1 month as you said

But its a massive deal because of the optics and the reality. Russia invaded a sovereign country and the region has become destabilized apart from the long list of war crimes. And there President is facing war crimes. The UNSC function is about  ensuring international peace and security.

So its about the optics, its a massive contradiction to the values of the UNSC but its only for a month

Yes, but so what, in terms of impactful action the US has its veto, so it's not dire. It shouldn't be absurd at this point given nations have held the presidency while droning, bombing or invading other countries. And they held it last year, and things went fine.

Also really, speaking of "values of the UNSC", amusing.

Well  you asked why is there so much fuss and I am answering why, the optics and the perception it creates. Now that doesnt change anything including how UNSC veto work but thats not what you were asking

And Im sure people also complained\fussed  when the US got the chair during the invasion of Iraq?

But the UNSC does have values but it cant always implement them because of the veto

My original comment was that it doesn't make sense to get wound up over it.  But given Ukraine complaints about things, I guess that overrides all.  As for the US in Iraq (or Vietnam, USSR in Afghanistan, etc) I would be very surprised if any noticed or cared that much, relative to the things they were doing at the time.

Maybe six or seven months ago there was a nice comparison of the time it has taken for FSB to find the "most likely" suspect in various cases. Whenever someone like Anna Politkovskaya is murdered, no suspect is generally found at all, whereas in cases more expedient to the FSB, the suspect (and nearly always the culprit) is found within 24-48 hours.

I can't see how this could make anyone suspicious of the Russian system at all.

Well they did kill Dugina, although they pissed off the US that way, so one reason it may not be them - not going to piss off their bosses again.  But he's not really been saying anything anti Putin apparently.

Probably going to be more than him, but I guess no one will care.

From all the news out there, I am still not 100% convinced, that Dugina was really work of UA. The ultra fast FSB response really raises an eyebrow. But who knows?

And this guy? Hard for me to believe that someone from UA can move around so deep into RU territory and put a bomb into a gift/award for him, without being noticed by FSB. And even if it would be UA, and if FSB would really give out to press the real evidence, no one would even pretend to believe them, after their decades long track record 🤷‍♂️

On April the 1st, the Club of Angry Patriots have been established in RU, here are the leading members and their backgrounds. They hate Prigozhin and are not having nice words about Putin, but they are still saying, they do not plan to overthrow the government (“yet”). Still a man can wonder, why none of them has fallen out of the window yet, despite them openly “Discrediting the Russian Army”. Probably someone very powerful is behind the marionette strings 🤷‍♂️

Btw, Russia went even further with its rhetoric on Friday, as the West is now seen as an "existential threat", according to Lavrov. The wording cannot be accidental, because it's directly related to Russia's nuclear doctrine. It's astonishing to hear this stuff because it's impossible to see how anyone is threatening Russia.

I think, this is another message, which is more likely aimed to domestic audience than to international. On 1st April, they started another round of conscription and they want to get as much as 400k more unfortunate Russian to the meatgrinder. And rhetoric as this, is said to boost the patriotism as much as possible from the lethargic people at home, who just want to be left alone so they can get drunk 🤷‍♂️

Three Putin  body doubles having their after-work glass of vodka together when suddenly their supervisor-colonel appears:
"Guys, breaking news. There was an assassination attempt on Putin. I've got good news and bad news for you"
One of the guys replied: "Please tell us the good news first"
Colonel: "He survived"
"And now the bad news"
"He has lost one arm"

An interesting demonstration of how Finns take the war in Ukraine very seriously: there was a general election on Sunday, and nearly all representatives who had demonstrated hesitation or unwillingness to join NATO lost their place. Definitely not surprising, in my view.

Thats the outcome I like to see, its obvious to the  future of the EU that Russian\Putin  nationalism is its biggest security threat. Any politicians that dont want to accept that must go

Its taken a long time for the EU to understand  and accept the risk Putin represents but the invasion of Ukraine has changed that. Better late than never
