    It was the first time Takeo and Toshio drive through the fields (if I recall correctly). It was pure magic, and the moment the film really clicked for me. :)

    Edit: Of course, the ending manages to be even better.

    Oh, that makes sense I wouldn't have a good impression of where it was used then, as that sudden jump back to the present after almost all of the first 40 minutes being a childhood flashback was probably my least favorite part of the film, :p.

    Not an anime per se, but Nier: Automata was a game where I would sometimes just stop and listen to the music (and then reload after dying!). Which reminds me, there is actually an anime out now for it. Maybe I should look for it 🤔

    have mentioned previous how impressed we were by the music o' both icewind dale 1 & 2. different composers, but similar evocative. 

    am not having a favorite anime music/tune, but paranorman was animated and include one o' the most underrated scores am able to recollect.

    aside, since @majestic is such a fan o' covers, we will share a couple favorites... one is even from an animated movie.

    have mentioned we originally thought led zeppelin were a blues cover band. 

    am so not a nirvana fan, but their version o' in the pines is fantastic. 

    prince being prince. 'nuff said.

    am disappointed the film (as well as the soundtrack) didn't get more love.

    Only tangentally related to Nier: Automata, but this is a great song in my opinion

    Maybe Laika shouldn't have made their protagonist so annoying that I wanted him to get horrifically maimed just ten minutes in - get a new one and restart the movie, please. Grumble, grumble.

    I can only comment on iwd 1, but yes: very well done. Evocative is exactly the word. I'm not going to go back to it to confirm, but I think there was a rather deliberate use of certain chord extensions going on; the composer used a rather old trick, but definitely knew what (s)he was doing, and it worked.

    This stuff always reminds me of the Tristan chord, as used by (obviously) Wagner. Sweet heaven it's a great chord to start a tradegy with: you instantly get that sense of melancholy. Sheer genius.

    Jeremy Soule (IWD) wasn't completely unknown back then. But Inon Zur was a completely blank slate for me when I saw his name in the credits...

    The Infinity Engine games generally had great music. Michael Hoenig's Baldurs Gate music isn't bad, nor was Mark Morgan's and Richard Band's contributions to Planescape Torment.

    Oh dear, that Scooter thing was way more awful than I thought. (I went directly to about 1:00, which put me in the chorus, and was only able to listen for about five seconds.)

    Here's an interesting thing: Billy Idol was great in the 1980s. But I never would have thought that his songs would endure so well. The best of them are excellent! I mean, just really really good pop music.

    Whenever Billy Idol's Rebel Yell comes on the Oldies radio station I have on in my car, I have to pull over out of traffic so I can go nuts. 😀

    I don't drive[*] but I get your point.

     

    [*] True story: the only time in my life that I've driven a car was in New Zealand, when I was in car with a woman I'd only met a couple of hours earlier. Upon learning that my driving experience was at zero, she promptly stopped the vehicle and made me drive for a while (we were on a secluded country road near Motueka). It immediately struck me that something interesting might happen if I told her that I'd never had sex before, either, but since I was going to have to get along with her for at least two weeks, I couldn't really risk it, even as a joke.

    jeff beck were a big fan o' stevie wonder and writes superstition with stevie in mind, but beck were s'posed to release his version first. record label has different ideas and decides stevie wonder version is first. the rest is history. so, technical, stevie wonder's version is the cover.

    I originally wanted to comment on the performance and how a certain, say, lifestyle, combined with age can have a detrimental effect on one's ability to perform on stage, but on the other hand, the guy was 71 at the time, so cutting some slack seems in order. Plus, it is still a pretty good song (potentially even if one does not understand the lyrics). :yes:
