I'm the enemy, 'cause I like to think, I like to read. I'm into freedom of speech, and freedom of choice. I'm the kinda guy that likes to sit in a greasy spoon and wonder, "Gee, should I have the T-bone steak or the jumbo rack of barbecue ribs with the side-order of gravy fries?" I want high cholesterol! I wanna eat bacon, and butter, and buckets of cheese, okay?! I wanna smoke a Cuban cigar the size of Cincinnati in the non-smoking section! I wanna run naked through the street, with green Jell-O all over my body, reading Playboy magazine. Why? Because I suddenly may feel the need to, okay, pal? I've SEEN the future. Do you know what it is? It's a 47-year-old virgin sitting around in his beige pajamas, drinking a banana-broccoli shake, singing "I'm an Oscar Meyer Wiene"

TLDR lol.

OK, I actually read a decent number, and a depressing number of similar things apply to our 'left wing' government here.

Hey man, I literally just had someone tell me that Canada's almost entirely left wing and this was part of his explanation!

Twitter is currently making profit and considering Musk plans, he also isn't planning to make Twitter more profitable (as he says that he wants stop data mining, content recommendation, etc. things that are used to sell twitter users to advertisers). In last quarter Twitter made $1.11 billion dollars from selling ads and $92 million from subscriptions. Ad revenue saw 23% growth where subscriptions saw 31% decrease.  Musk would like to remove ads from twitter and move fully in subscription system. Operating cost of twitter is bit over billion

Twitter censors messages because it needs to get companies to advertise and not get black listed by banks.  It is same reason why youtube, facebook, tumblr, tiktok, twitch, etc. social media companies set stricter restrictions for their content each year.

It is why sites like onlyfans and ph are limiting content people can post in them.

Meaning that ideology is not in twitter but companies like Tesla that tell social media companies what kind content is acceptable if they want to get advertisements/business from them.

Oh wait...you think our prison population is tied to crime rates. Sorry, I forgot you are still living in that fairy tale world.

I understand that prisons are a lucrative business but I dont understand your second statement. What does it mean? Theyve committed no crimes?

borrowing the immortal words o' vol, no.

am thinking most people do not understand what a corporation is. not social organization. most US corporations have a single owner. many corporations do indeed have multiple shareholders or is public traded, but the vast majority is single owners who wish to limit their financial liability. most simple description: corporations is a scheme for encouraging business ventures and investment. that's all.

example: bob wants to start a commode refurbishing business but he don't want to lose his house or his daughter's college fund if the venture fails to succeed, 'cause a commode refurbishing business is not a slam dunk venture, eh? so bob files articles o' incorporation for his new business. the corporation is a legal construct which provides bob with a certain amount o' security from creditors. as long as bob don't comingle funds or break certain rules and laws, he can't lose more in his commode business than he has invested. bob's commode business assets is separate from his personal assets.

so, no.

HA! Good Fun!

I read it as prison isn't doing much as a deterrent to crime and/or the prison population doesn't reflect crime rates.

IIRC our prison population boom was tied to the war on drugs and sentencing law/policy changes

There was brief engagement and his stance is basically "publicly traded companies are the public sector." Which is the second time I've seen a Canadian say that to me. (Had a person previously suggest of course I am a socialist because I work for Electronic Arts and they are publicly traded, which was an interesting way to make that connection).

So indeed, no idea what a corporation is.

given what were the utter fail o' prohibition, is kinda mind blowing that a mere fifty or sixtyish years would elapse before repeating the same mistakes... mistakes magnified by minimum sentencing guidelines voted 'pon and passed democratic 'cause society were not satisfied with the namby-pamby notions o' justice judges were embracing... or at least the conjured notions o' justice self-interested politicians were selling to the ignorant masses.

am s'posing law & order as a political platform has been popular since before the athenians, and deterrence and reformation has always been at best secondary concerns for The People who demand criminals to get their due.

I mean I have general issues with James O'Keefe, but I find them to be untrustworthy, selectively editing source that attempts to "gotcha" people in order to serve their needs.

Before he was Project Veritas there was already sketchiness about his "stings" with both Planned Parenthood and ACORN particularly around edited videos. The ACORN stuff is particularly sketchy since the original release prompted an aggressive response from the government. It also failed to take into account of varying types of appeasement that can occur to get someone out of the office, which Veritas used as proof that ACORN was doing terrible stuff despite the (later revealed) reality that once O'Keefe and Giles left, staff had immediately called police to report the crime. (O'Keefe actually ended up losing a lawsuit associated with all of this and was forced to apologize to the ACORN representative he was talking to, but ultimately ACORN was still dissolved so the goals were still accomplished even if O'Keefe had to pose as apologetic for a moment).

This trend just continued after he officially created Project Veritas. The attempts to "prove" the Washington Post was biased against Roy Moore was the first real high profile case I remember hearing about them, which blew up in their face but luckily for them their financiers have deep pockets.

TL;DR I think they lie at worst, and selectively edit at best, their political enemies for their own political gains and end up wasting a ton of people's time by attempting sting operations that aren't particularly well planned and leveraged in ways I feel are ultimately harmful.

Hah, FoxNews knows their audience. :p

California also had a huge budget surplus this year. I would love to see an actual decline, since that might make it possible to buy a house, but the reality is California is doing just fine.

Could probably get deeper with it and ask "what is crime?"

And then expand whether or not a state that has private prisons that financially benefit from incarcerated persons might impact the rates of criminality among the population (or subsets thereof).

The thought of going to prison definitely helps with people who may want to break the law but knowing they face jail time and consequence means they less likely to break the law

Whats the alternative, no prisons for criminal behavior?

I had the impression from the subsequent post below that this isn't a view you genuinely hold?

Its a known FACT that most prisoners are just poor schmucks that got dealt a bad hand in life and had no choice but to turn to a life of crime. Working is hard, F-that! If we simply provided everyone free money, shelter, medicine and education then the prisons would be virtually empty in a generation. The solution is so easy, just remove all of the things in life that requires effort and we will sail into nirvana on gossamer wings.

AFAIK no state has "private prisons". There ARE states that contract the administration of prisons but those contractors work for and are accountable to the state government just as state employees would be.

While true I am encompassing in general institutions that are able to profit off of incarcerated folk, I'm not sure your assessment is correct?

"In 2019, privately operated facilities held 7% of state prisoners and 16% of federal prisoners."
