BBC - Speedo Mick : Praise for 'fantastic human being' who raised £1m

Quote

For nine years, Michael Cullen has crossed the length and breadth of the UK wearing little more than a pair of blue swimming trunks to raise £1m.

Speedo Mick, as he is better known, began by swimming across the English Channel and has gone on climb four mountains and walk 6,000 miles.

The 58-year-old has said it was a way to thank the people who helped him his own personal mental health challenges.

His final challenge to walk from John O'Groats to Land's End will end later.

It means he will hang up his trunks having made his "dream come true" after he passed the £1m mark on Thursday.

The money he has raised has helped more than 120 organisations across the UK and Ireland through The Speedomick Foundation, the fund he set up to give grants to small charities supporting those with mental health issues, disadvantaged young people, the homeless and others.

Hope Carrasquilla, a former principal of a Florida school, who resigned after parents complained about her showing pupils a photo of Michelangeo’s iconic, naked David statue has visited the masterpiece in person in Florence

A former principal of a Florida school, who was forced to resign after parents complained her lesson containing images of Michelangelo’s iconic David statue was “pornographic”, has been welcomed in the Italian city of Florence to see the masterpiece in person.

Hope Carrasquilla stepped down as head of Tallahassee Classical School last month after one parent claimed the sculpture was pornographic and others complained they weren't told their children would be shown the nude figure during a lesson on the Renaissance.

After her resignation, Florence Mayor Dario Nardella and Galleria dell’Accademia director Cecilie Hollberg invited Carrasquilla to see the artwork in person. On Friday, 28 April, she arrived in the city to view the statue with her husband and two children.

May 1 (Reuters) - Almost a third of the nurses in the United States are considering leaving their profession after the COVID-19 pandemic left them overwhelmed and fatigued, according to a survey.

The survey of over 18,000 nurses, conducted by AMN Healthcare Services Inc (AMN.N) in January, showed on Monday that 30% of the participants are looking to quit their career, up 7 percentage points over 2021, when the pandemic-triggered wave of resignations began.

I suppose this is mostly of interest to people who are "my generation" and/or Danish...

https://www.bbc.com/travel/article/20230501-regan-vest-inside-denmarks-secret-nuclear-bunker

Because I grew up in a world, where we from early school age were taught where the nearest bomb shelter was and always were made aware of it all the way up until my early 30's

200 rooms (living and workspace), intended to house 350 people in case of nuclear war

The bunker complex is frozen in time, with old-fashioned equipment left in untouched offices (Credit: Adrienne Murray Nielsen)

Regan Vest was built in the early 1960s at the height of Cold War tensions (Credit: Adrienne Murray Nielsen)

This one was one of (assumed) two bunker systems for the Danish government in case of nuclear war. Queen Margarethe II's "room" (a tiny cell) was the VIP room because it had carpets on the concrete floor 😂

Queen Margrethe had her own quarters here in case nuclear war broke out (Credit: Adrienne Murray Nielsen)

I say assumed, as there are rumors of a REGAN east bunker, but that one has never been confirmed to exist.

5000+ square meters, 50+ meters under the ground and the entrance from the rather unassuming, hard to spot surface entrance leads you on a 300m slope downwards to the bunker proper. Open for public visitors in small, organized groups.

An old story from 1985.. the early days of modem use.

An Atlanta man angered by a television evangelist took it out on the Rev. Jerry Falwell, by having his home computer call Falwell’s toll-free phone line every 30 seconds for eight months.

Imagine the shock an horror of the operator...

Civilization, in fact, grows more and more maudlin and hysterical; especially under democracy it tends to degenerate into a mere combat of crazes; the whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary. - H.L. the thing is, the linked story is hardly the first mri horror story am having heard even if it is one o' the more unique. as such one wonders why the techs don't at least have metal detector wands so they might give patients a quick check for overlooked artifacts which might be magnetic. yeah, the wands is hardly infallible and am not even certain if such a device woulda' detected the offending plug. even so, why not indulge a bit o' extra caution, eh?

have had more than a few mri experiences over the years and for the most recent we weren't even asked to disrobe and then don a hospital gown. given how cold were the room with the mri, we were quite relived we were able to retain clothing. 'course without a complete disrobe am suspecting more than one person has overlooked a metal rivet, button or zipper.

dunno. am possible overlooking something, but metal detector wands seems like a good way to catch at least a few overlooked jewelry, piercings, clothing fixtures and sex toys.

HA! Good Fun!

I doubt a wand would've caught the toy, but I think a proper walk-through metal detector could've worked.

gold is rare 24k gold, and even then if the necklace has a clasp such is likely not gold. am also suspecting more than one person who believes their 24k gold jewelry is pure is mistaken. yeah, maybe your gold is mixed with non-magnetic, but nickel is an increasing popular addition to gold alloys, and nickel is magnetic. how do most o' us know for certain our gold is genuine 24k? as a matter o' policy we would ask for removal o' any metallic jewelry.

HA! Good Fun!

Before the last MRI that I had, I was put into a gown and then told to stand against the wall with my arms and legs spread while they wanded me down. They even made me take off my gold necklace.

hmmm.

is ewan's older brother, and episode 1 were only 1999, so likely woulda' required a callsign change for the thirty-something pilot. and again, is the older brother who became a real-life fighter pilot supposed being saddled with obi-two  as a nick/callsign, which seems kinda uncharacteristic for brits... and aviators.

sounds more like internet meme fodder. we would search for confirmation before spreading this one.
