juneteenth

we typical make it to berkeley (were held june 16th this year) as we got acquaintances who help organize the annual berkeley juneteenth festival.  unfortunate, this year we had a local appointment which were three months in the making, so missed for first time since 2008... which weren't actual a miss.

bulk o' local capital city observance happens during the upcoming weekend with park festivals including entertainments and food.

HA! Good Fun!

Florida city to pay $600K ransom to hacker who seized computer systems weeks ago

Quote

A Florida city is paying $600,000 in Bitcoins to a hacker who took over local government computers after an employee clicked on a malicious email link three weeks ago.

Riviera Beach officials voted this week to pay 65 Bitcoins to the hacker who seized the city's computer systems, forcing the local police and fire departments to write down the hundreds of daily 911 calls on paper, CNN affiliate WPEC reported.

The 65 Bitcoins, which equals $600,000, will come from the city's insurance, officials said.

The Accidental Invention of the Super Soaker

"The invention landed Johnson in the National Toy Hall of Fame. Christopher Bensch, vice president for collections and chief curator, says Johnson’s interstellar credentials give him elite status among inductees.

"“He’s probably overqualified as toy inventors go,” he says. “After all, he is a rocket scientist. His invention was a rarified breakthrough because of its success. It ranks up there with the Slinky and Silly Putty. None of them were designed to be toys.”"

Double posting... because the quote function is just being obnoxious, sorry guys.

I got an email a few months ago on a yahoo mail address that I have, with an old password of mine in the subject line. Somebody claiming to have hacked my pc, huh, you recognize this password, right? rather smug sounding. We have had control of your pc and web cam for a while and filmed you and what you were doing while watching porn sites. Pay $1800 to this bit coin recipient (some info) or we'll share the videos with all your friends

Yeah, laughing, because one, the password hadn't been used for 6-7 years and second, I don't really waste time on porn sites, so I knew right away it was all made up. Probably based on some probability stuff that x percent of the population does what they claim and somebody might feel it applied to them specifically. Email lasted for about 60 seconds while I pondered if it was worth handing out to the police, but I decided that would be a waste of both my time and their time (they would most likely just tell me to delete it and forget it).

The scary bit is, I can see how someone could fall for a scammer like that in a moment of panic. Also worrying that some old website/webstore somewhere lost it's user data somehow (which is why I use disposable email addresses and passwords these days for stuff that is requiring an address to sign up).
