Keyrock Posted February 2 Posted February 2 I'm not looking at discrete GPUs for anything besides pure curiosity any time soon. Barring a hardware failure, I have zero reason to replace anything or build a new system. My goal was always 4K at high or better settings and mission accomplished with my current hardware. I don't see the point in 8K unless the screen size is 100" or bigger and I wouldn't even consider purchasing a 100" 8K TV until they become affordable (read: $1000ish), that ain't happening any time soon. I don't even want to look up what a 100" 8K TV costs right now. I'm guessing it's 4 digits. RFK Jr 2024 "Any organization created out of fear must create fear to survive." - Bill Hicks
Humanoid Posted February 2 Posted February 2 Hell, I'd be happy to buy 1440p again, provided it's both OLED and affordable (because I'd likely want to buy three of them at the same time). L I E S T R O N GL I V E W R O N G
LadyCrimson Posted February 4 Posted February 4 My stuff still mostly gets me 60fps/4k at High (more if not average aaa sorts, or if I turn on a little DLSS) and I'm fine with that. I don't game constantly anymore and not worth new (pricey) tops gpu without new cpu at this point, either, imo. Thus I'm also waiting for the 5080/5090 to see what it does/the price. Maybe Death Stranding 2/PC will motivate a new build. Maybe. I'm not sure there are any (consumer, common store) 100" 8k TV's available. Biggest I've seen mentioned in reviews is 86" ($5-$6k or more usually). Which isn't to say there might not be some fancy dancy uber rich designer $15k version, not sold in consumer stores. But I also see little point in 8k for typical home use, even for gaming. 100"+ to me would be when I'd prefer face-interface gaming/movie watching to become more (long session, comfortable/less intrusive to wear) usable/amazing instead, if one is interested in the "eyeball surround/immersion" sensation. “Things are as they are. Sven_ Posted June 6 Posted June 6 (edited) When clicking the video above, Youtube greeted me with the ultimate irony: Playing a credit loan kind of ad first. So, basically NextGen advertising: The more you loan, the more you buy. The more you buy, the more you save. Still running my 1050ti. Likely until it's run into the ground. Mind you, it's only in because I don't play much graphical blockbuster kind of games anymore. KCD II may be the first time I genuinelly want to upgrade. Rest of the system is a Zen 2 Ryzen, so a tad fresher and capable of running faster CPUs, including the 5800x3D. 5, 6 years ago you could get a fairly decent RX 580 for like 200 bucks, eventually below. For the same amount of money, you still but get a RX 6600 -- and that's but ~70% faster and still has the same 8GB. Things have really stalled in the entry level in particular. Current gen RTX 4060 / RX 7600 cards still ship with the same 8GB the RX 480 shipped with in 2016 as well. Even for Full-HD, you can't run higher textures anymore in every game. If the likes of 5060 and RX 8600 ship with 8GB still, they can keep those. Before I'm ever going to pay the price of a console just for a GPU, I'm opting out of blockbuster gaming for good. For KCDII though... we'll see. Edited June 6 by Sven_ 1
Bartimaeus Posted June 6 Posted June 6 (edited) Yeah, I don't play new AAA games basically ever, so last year I bought an RTX 2060 from EVGA for a hundred bucks and called it good. I haven't run into any games where I needed it to be more powerful than that, so... It's not as if I can't afford it, but I don't know, I've never paid more than $200 for a GPU in my life and I'm kind of inclined to keep it that way what with my faded interest in current AAA games. Pretty much this. My most expensive was the first Voodoo generation MiroHiscore 3D with 6MB rather than the then standard 4MB for over 400 DM,- back then. This was followed by Voodoo 3 (200 bucks upon launch). Even a GeForce 4ti I got for 99 Euros (a year after initial relase, brand new). And until ~ten years ago, only enthusiasts really ever NEEDED to spend significantly more than ~250 bucks in general. There was a WEALTH of viable options even for ~100-150 for many years. So making that jump AND just getting GPUs with 2016 mid-range (RX 480) / minimum requirement amounts of VRAM, I dunno. I'm not gonna run out of games for the forseeable future as such. Plus, I bet even the 2500 Dollars RTX 5090 ain't gonna support CTX (Commodore-Tracing) anyway, so meh. Lovely bunch of pixels brought to you by: SKALD: Against The Black Priory. majestic Posted June 6 Posted June 6 Well, here's to hoping Intel's Battlemage can deliver better compatibility at a decent price. The A770 cards wouldn't be half bad as alternative to nVidia's and AMD's very underwhelming cards at that price range, if it would be less of a dice roll with fresh game releases. 1 No mind to think. No will to break. No voice to cry suffering.
Bartimaeus Posted June 6 Posted June 6 Aren't they a dice roll with OLD games, too? That's the primary I've never considered them, having heard horror stories about compatibility with old crap, especially anything DX9 and earlier. Immediate compatibility with new games doesn't really concern me. Quote How I have existed fills me with horror. majestic Posted June 6 Posted June 6 They fixed DX9 a while ago, it is now supported natively in the drivers and no longer emulated. GN retested Arc every now and then. 2 No mind to think. No will to break. No voice to cry suffering.
LadyCrimson Posted June 12 Posted June 12 All the rumors/"leaks" re: 50xx specs has me thinking I'll be waiting until 60xx. Or maybe 70xx. Or maybe a used 50xx during the 60xx period. majestic Posted June 12 Posted June 12 Ah, yes, performance leaks and performance expectations are wonderful things. AMD expected RDNA3 to outperform Ada Lovelace. The rumor mill expected a 40% IPC increase with Zen 5. Leaks said Intel is going to up the core count on the 14th gen i5s. Intel thought Meteor Lake would be able to outperform Raptor Lake. There were leaks once about how Battlemage was going to have 512MB of L2 cache. Karzak once expected that Temple of Elemental Evil is going to make people forget about Baldur's Gate 2. You can guess thrice which one of those turned out to be true. 2 No mind to think. No will to break. No voice to cry suffering.
LadyCrimson Posted June 12 Posted June 12 I'm mostly not interested in another round of the "the xx90 is the only one "worth" buying if they're gonna gimp the lower tiers but not also lower the price enough on those gimped lower tiers." And by lower tiers I mean ... the xx80. ...also not interested in a gpu that weighs more than my head and needs support brackets in a tower case, or an extra gpu cooler stack, or a 3rd mobo slot, or a dedicated home circuit, or whatever else, if any of that comes to pass, either soon or in the future. “Things are as they are. The only time my computer got infected was back in the ancient DOS times from a shareware collection on CD from a trade show I went to. That was in '93 or so. Well, techically untrue, I once installed a remote control tool with trojan capabilities to test it out. Should probably say the only unintentional infection with malicious software. LadyCrimson Posted September 24 Posted September 24 (edited) No comments re: AMD's decision to exit the high-end gpu market? Does nvidia have a total monopoly re: super high end now? I don't know if I'd want to spend the likely near/over 2k for a 5090 even if it lasted me 8+ years. Maybe I should just get a 4070ti and be done with it. That might last me 5+ more (4k) years w/my gaming habits and I'd save $1k or more. Pffft. I might not even have to cpu upgrade yet ... although I suspect my current mobo might not work....or the case.....and ofc it'd bottleneck a little even at 4k I'm sure, but still. Sigh. I feel like the consumer gaming rig business is really in bad place, from a consumer perspective. Edit: not just the high end prices but there's the intel chip stuff, and power consumption/energy and ... just feels kinda doom and gloomy I guess. Humanoid Posted September 24 Posted September 24 The same thing has already happened multiple times in recent memory, so it's nothing new really. Is it really any different to just 5 years ago with the 5700 XT, a decade ago with the RX 480, and going further back, the 3870? Doesn't feel like it. The mainstream gamer will be find and well catered for by whichever products they'll likely release. They try to create a halo product that matches nVidia's best when they can, but if they're way behind in a particular generation, they don't bother. Yeah, it hurts the Radeon brand in terms of it increasingly being viewed as just a value product, but it's not like it has much cachet right now even with the existence of the 7900 XTX. I think the last time AMD could have made a claim to have the fastest card was in 2013 with the 290X? As for me, I'm looking forward to so few bleeding-edge games that I suspect I can stretch the life of this midrange 5800X + RX 6800 system I built early-2021 into the DDR6 era whenever that arrives, thus bypassing DDR5 altogether. The four-digit naming scheme will probably be gone by then so I can't even pretend to plan for something like an 11800X3D or whatever. 1 hour ago, LadyCrimson said: Maybe I should just get a 4070ti and be done with it. A 4070 Ti Super or more realistically a 4080 would be the baseline for a passable 4K card. And neither do all that well with current AAA games at 4K. The 4090 at least is usually enough to run 4K natively without having frame drops that hurt the experience. They're passable 4K baseline cards if you either do not turn on all the bells and whistles (outside of esports, how does anyone justify spending that sort of money on a GPU then?) or if you accept DLSS as part of the gaming experience. The current versions work quite well in 4K. 2 hours ago, LadyCrimson said: I don't know if I'd want to spend the likely near/over 2k for a 5090 even if it lasted me 8+ years. It is a rather simple decision, albeit a painful one: if you really want a GPU that will last you the next five years for 4K natively, you can either shell out the money for an RTX 4090 now, or wait to see what the 50 series brings. If you can live with DLSS, you can probably make do with a 4080 Super. They're actually available at MSRP, at least here. But, in that case it might pay off to wait for RDNA4, the current rumors have it that it is going to offer 4080 like performance for only a fraction of the price. However, those rumors likely come from the same source that said RDNA3 is going to wipe the floor with nVidia's 4090 and that Zen 5 is going to offer a 40% increase in IPC, so, yeah, well... you shouly probably take those with more than a grain of salt. LadyCrimson Posted September 24 Posted September 24 (edited) ^ Guys, I'm not interested in 99% of "AAA" (or "AAAA", or probably even most "AA") games. I'm also not interested in anything above 60fps. Or ray tracing. Or most of the other graphic bells and whistles touted as must have features these days when it comes to game high/ultra "presets" that get tested by all the youtube channels. Turn all that stuff off and my rig is likely to still get 50-60fps/4k in many of them. Some of them I do need DLSS/quality on that to not dip below 50 tho. YT guru benchmarks on games are nice and all, but they aren't for people who tweak their settings to death. The only two "AAA" games that I might be interested in at the moment that I'm guessing would require an upgrade (to stay at least close to 4k/60 with at least high textures and draw distances) would be Death Stranding 2 and Borderlands 4. And that's maybe. At any rate, thing is even smaller dev's games are getting more demanding/less optimized - or at least, feels like they give you less control over what options you can tweak in menus, because apparently giving users built-in options is hard or too much work or something. Edit: the 4070ti seemed like it would be an overall jump in fps vs. my card - not a huge leap, but more - which would likely be good enough. 12GB video ram is also definitely still "enough" if you're not going for RT/all ultra etc - most games I play/have tried in the past couple years (mostly smaller devs) don't even use up the 11 in the 2080ti. I think that Res. Evil 4 remake would take up more if you upped a couple specificsettings a lot but that was about it. Although yes, if I'm patient enough to wait and see what the 5070 or something is like, that could end up being better. The main "fear" is if you wait too long then the 4070series is largely gone/unavailable and now you're stuck with the 50xx at possibly even more inflated pricing.
