Based on my choices in the trials I received two motes of hostility and one mote of conviction. I am not sure what the significance is, but I think if I list my results we'll figure it out. After giving the motes to the shackled soul, I was simply attacked in the final battle. I was not offered the opportunity to get Naxiva to help me with the dragon like I could with the other two.

Perhaps with 3x conviction there would be a different outcome?

For the record, the choices that led to my motes were

As accused: Attack the court (combat)

As inquisitor: Speak some heresy (no combat)

As witness: Speak some heresy (combat)

I had one anger a conviction and a regret IIRC and I was able to reconcile and get past some of the fight at the end. I never fought anyone in the towers, I think you're supposed to avoid the most negative emotions you can get out of them, but you can have at least one anger or other negative emotion and still get more than just a fight at the end.

I had the same set as Clawdias. Hostility > Conviction >Regret (though order probably doesn't matter).

First one was by saying 'she's lying', calling out the Inquisitor, and then that aggroing her. (was a witness)

Second was by saying that the prisoner should be free and the faith was false. (was the Inquisitor)

Third was by saying that the issue was her being divided with herself, but that I could help - with metaphysics. Can't remember who I was then.

Also, it was so cool to get to bring up the gods issue along with the leaden key conspiracy stuff. I know it doesn't change much beyond a lady's memory, but I very much appreciate it.

seems only the middle one can get mote of regret

tried the other two only get conviction or hostility

I got the regret mote from point 2 and 3

Edit : to clarify I was messing with each point endlessly and got the regret mote at some point eventually. The set I talked about was my final playthrough.

It's really hard to get, but one can also get a Mote of Regret from the first vision.

The only way to get the Mote of Regret in the first vision is to be the accused, admit your crimes (and not by calling the gods a naughty name right away ) and then be truly penitent.  Not a surprise folks might not have run into it much in that convo set.

There's a couple of different way to admit your crimes (spoilered for length):

You can either admit them right away by choosing "I accept them. I have wronged the gods, and I pray forgiveness" at the very first set of options.

Or by choosing the "Then I suppose I'm guilty" option (there are a few different ways to get that one).

The court will be a little surprised at your stance, especially if you admit your crimes right away. Then you HAVE to select "I accept this penance." as the other two options will either lead to the Mote of Conviction or Hostility (via combat).

Speaking of Hostility, while the 'easy' way to get it is to go for the Attack options (and survive) when ever they show up, it's also possible to get Hostility by being especially mouthy as the accused.

When one gets to the "A smart system you've got here. Who needs truth when you've got zeal?" option, choose that one (again, there are a few ways to get to it) and then choose "Damn you, damn your gods, and damn your court!", you'll be condemned and get a Mote of Hostility for your trouble.

So, in summary:

Witness: Usually Conviction but can get Hostility via combat.

Accused: Regret (via admitting crimes and taking the penance willingly), Hostility (combat or mouthing off), and Conviction (just about everything else) with most paths leading to Conviction.

As for the end, ironically enough, I wasn't able to get her to reconcile when I had three motes of regret ("No, there's nothing I recognize in this creature."), so it's probably not worth it to try that hard on the first one.

After testing and double checking the game scripts, if you have two hostility or more motes, you can't get her to reconcile. However, on further testing I found it is possible with two motes of Conviction and one of either of the other motes or two motes of Regret and one of the other two.

So apparently it looks like:

2 or more hostility:  Too given to rage to talk.
3 conviction or 3 remorse:  Too far into one extreme.
Middle zones: Possible to reconcile.

And by reconcile I mean the hostile Inquisitor going away, leaving the rest of the enemies to fight.

I haven't tried each and every one of these permutations, but it does appear from a fair amount of testing that this is right.
