I have been having this discussion a lot on PW servers for NWN 1. Many people tend to believe that clerics make a one-man-army on many occasions and that they are too powerful. Why is that? Is their argument true? How can this be remedied? Is this argument valid only for NWN or for DnD in general? My main concern about clerics is that they can cast spells while wearing heavy armor and carrying shields, and that they have too many HPs. Their Hitdie should be reduced to d6 and they should only be able to cast spells in light armor at best. IMHO, clerics should be less combat-oriented than they are in the PhB. I can't imagine a "priest" being better in combat than a rogue or a bard (who should be more akin to fighting and survival). I thus believe that the latter class should have a Hitdie of d8 instead. Moreover, the cleric's spell list is far from negligible. Making the cleric a full-armored spellcaster is way too much to my eyes.... PS: All the above-mentioned remarks apply to the druid class.

Thanks a lot for your replies (and welcome to these boards, BobbyN) ! I have made a lot of search on the internet and have decided to buy both basic games (black dragon and blue dragon versions) and all the dungeon tiles sets. I have yet to buy any DnD product even though I have been playing it for years. I play in a group of 3-4 people and we all use the books one of my friends owns. I have been thinking of buying the core books but I have changed my mind after finding the SRD and some very useful consolidated lists for spells, feats, monsters, etc in PDF format. I have thus decided to regroup all the needed info and print them out by myself. No need to spend lots of bucks for books that are very difficult to use (I prefer to have a book that groups all the useful information together - the core books tend to have too many unnecessary details which make page shuffling a chore). Last but not least, I can edit the rules I don't agree with, which is definite plus for me. The basic sets are worth their price since they offer some good minis and tiles. I might also manage to get my gf into DnD... lol Dungeon tiles are really great for people who need visual aid when roleplaying. Moreover, you can quickly solve issues that may arise in combat. Dungeons and Dragons Minis are not worth their money on the other hand. There's too many of them and there's no way you can get every type of creature without spending a fortune. I found some very interesting thread on the internet where someone suggested printing out the NWN portrait after reducing their format to 1x1 (inches). That's a neat way to "populate" your tiles with all kinds of npcs and monsters with very little cost. I have been thinking of buying adventure/module books but I highly dislike WotC's new encounter format that requires a lot of page shuffling. That leaves me with the old 3E adventure books (forge of fury, sunless citadel, etc), the red hand of doom and the city of the spider queen (which all seem ok to me). Playing DnD can be quite costy if you aren't selective... New ideas are welcome though. One can never have too many of them... ;-p

Hello all, I have been with the same ISP for quite some time now and I have gained a certain number of fidelity points that can be exchanged with various items. From the list we get to choose from, I noticed they were offering a 1GB Dane-Elec SD card for 6800 points and a 1GB Dane-Elec microSD card. After making a quick search on google, Dane-Elec microSD cards always come with a full-sized SD adapter in the same package. What I really need is a SD card for both my camera and my laptop, but using a microSD one with an adapter should have the same effect as a pure SD card (from what I have understood at least). As you can see, the microSD card costs less points. This will allow me to buy one more item, which wouldn't be possible if I took the other card. Is there a big difference between the two cards? Does the adapter make the microSD card as effective as the pure one? Which one should I take? Thanks in advance! Cheers! Some links: http://www.amazon.com/DANE-ELEC-Dane-Elec-...9777&sr=8-2 http://store.treocentral.com/dane-elec-1gb...7A128A1233A.htm QUOTE: All of DaneElec's microSD cards come bundled with a microSD to SD card adaptor, allowing you to use your microSD card in any device that accepts traditional SD cards, such as your digital camera, laptop, or another smartphone.

I have been thinking of improving my p&p sessions through the use of miniatures. I have always thought it would be better (and maybe more entertaining) to illustrate what is happening in a room or a dungeon (or even in combat) by using a gaming board with tiles, character miniatures and furniture miniatures. The problem with dnd is that miniatures come randomly in the boxes you purchase. That is how the Dnd basic Game attracted my attention since the miniatures offered are non-random (and pretty cool btw). There are two editions of the basic game as you can see below, and I have decided to buy them both, and this should cost me approximately 40 euros (60 dollars/ 30 pounds). Click here to see more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dungeons_&...gons_Basic_Game By combining the DnD basic game contents with the ones found in the game Hero quest, i have been thinking of creating the ultimate p&p experience. Hero quest is an old board game made by MB that included an impressive set of monsters, trap tiles, door tiles, furniture miniatures, etc. I don't own the game yet but I could buy it from ebay for approximately 20 euros (30 dollars/ 15 pounds). Click here to see more: http://www.heroquestofficial.com/ I do think it would be cool to play p&p with all those items but my main question is "do I need any of this?" Is this a complete waste of my money or is it worth the investment? I have played p&p before and we used none of these but I always felt that the game lacked a bit of flavor. I really want to think about this carefully before spending all this money all at once. What do you guys think? PS: I also keep in mind that with 4th edition coming soon, the Dnd basic sets will be removed from the market, and that its price will progressively increase just as with other board games. Moreover, the Dnd basic sets are the only boxes out there to provide a substantive number of miniatures that can be used in several different campaigns (they contain universal monsters, in other words... monsters that I may not find that easily if I buy the WotC's random miniature boxes). Thanks in advance! Cheers!

Thanks for your replies! You have submitted some very interesting and innovating ideas. This gives lots of material to think about. An alternative could be to keep the highest number of skills and just offer a bigger variety to players. It would then make sense to keep most of 3.5E skills (maybe add a few from 3E as well). I still believe the skill points gained upon level up are not enough when we have a range of 30+ skills. I can only think of adding 2 skill points per level for every class out there. Sure, rogues become overpowered but that may be the merit of this specific class since they aren't that good in combat. I am not too sure about Lore. I just find it convenient to merge all Knowledge skills. Besides, as a DM and as a player, I don't want to bother with having too many sub-skills... Perform, Craft and Profession may have sub-skills however... This adds flavor to the game... On second thought, Balance shouldn't be a merge skill for climb, swim, jump and tumble. I DO think however that Jump and swim are useless skill. A Dexterity check should be enough... Forgery, Craft and Profession may be kept as they are... They just make the game more spicy... So far, I believe those skills should be merged: Spot and Listen should become Perception Hide and Move Silently should become Stealth Interesting 3E skills: Innuendo: I see many RP opportunities with this one Read Lips: It's quite interesting but I wonder if it can be merged with Innuendo Alchemy: I have come to like it after re-reading the 3E description of the skill. Should it be kept or not? Some questions that remain: What should I do with the Set Traps skill? Should it be removed and treated like the Use Poison ability (10+d10+DEX vs. DC)? Why is Track (feat) treated differently from Survival (skill)? Can they be merged? Why is Wild Empathy (ranger and druidic ability) treated differently from Handle Animal (skill)? Can they be merged? How about Decipher Script? I have been thinking of merging it with the Lore skill. However, since Lore has come to replace all Knowledge sub-skills, keeping Decipher Script should bring some balance to that. PS: You may wonder why I have this tendency to merge feats, skills and abilities. I just want to make dnd rules simpler and put together features that have more or less similar effects. This may be true for wild empathy and handle animal. It may be coherent however to separate track from Survival. Maybe the use of wild empathy should be linked to the handle animal skill, just as Track is linked to the Survival skill. PS2: To answer Reinoc's questions: I just discovered that I had misread the description of the Speak Language skill. My previous comment is thus null and void. Concerning the Profession skill, I still tend to believe that it has a limited purpose. However, in order to make a balanced and interesting set of rules, I may need to keep it if I ever decide to remove the Craft, Forgery and Perform skills... PS3: The attached files are SRD excerpts of the 3E edition rules. srdskillsi.rtf srdskillsii.rtf

Hi all! I have been trying for quite some time to make a definitive list of class skills for my custom dnd rules. The problem is that there have been some changes between 3E and 3,5E... Still, in the latter, there's a total number of 36 skills! I do believe this is way too much considering the skill points each class gets. Furthermore, quite a few of those skills are rarely or never used. The whole idea behind this thread is to suggest me which skills to keep, which skills to merge and which skills to remove. I will list all the skills available out there (including a few of my own creation) and I will add comments next to them. I would be grateful if you told me which ones you find useful and which ones you think aren't needed. Alchemy -useless since there's a brew potion feat, could be combined with spellcraft. Handle animal -this could be a class ability for rangers and druids instead of a skill. Appraise -useless in a way: p&p gaming involves to many calculations already. I just make a CHA check and reduce/augment prices accordingly... Balance -useless as desrcibed in 3,5E. I have been thinking of using it for tumble/ride/swim/jump/climb checks altogether. Bluff -should be a dialog skill for characters with high CHA. Concentration -no changes Craft -could be merged with Profession:crafter... me and my friends never use it anyway... Decipher Script -useless, will be merged with Lore Diplomacy -should be a dialog skill for characters with high WIS. Disable Device -no changes Escape Artist - useless, a DEX check should be sufficient Forgery -useless (at least for me and my friend), could become Profession:Forger Gather Information - useless, this removes all the fun of using dialog skills with specific NPCs Disguise -no changes Heal -I like the NWN adaptation of this skill Intimidate - should be a dialog skill for characters with high STR. Lore - this combines all Knowledge skills Open lock - no changes Perform - I don't like the idea of make it mandatory for a bard to spend skill points in order to use a class ability. This skill could be used for other purposes tough. It could also become Profession:performer. Profession - is this really useful? My friends and myself never use it... Pick Pocket - no changes Search -detect traps, listen and spot at the same time Sense Motive -it's the check that opposes all dialog skills Spellcraft -no changes Survival -could become a class ability: I was thinking of Track (available only for rangers and barbarians) Speak Language -useless: known languages are determined at character creation (race and INT modifiers are involved) Use magic device -no changes Use rope -useless, a DEX check should be sufficient Skills that are being removed: Hide and move silently have been replaced by Stealth Listen, spot and detect traps have been replaced by Search Ride, Swim, Jump and Climb have been replaced by Balance What about those NWN skills? Taunt: this could be used as a feat instead Discipline: this could be merged into the balance skill Parry: this could be used as a feat instead Set traps: I am really tempted in putting that skill in my list of homebrew rules. The thing is that 3,5E (to my understanding) treats the use of traps as the use of poison. Characters make a simple check to see if they have succeeded without having any specific skills). If Set traps become a skill, so should Poison Use. What do you think? One new skill: Insight - should be a dialog skill for characters with high INT.

Does it feature the mass slaughter of many Hobbits? Oh, how I loved Overlord for it giving me that. I may like it on second thought...

It won't be because I already hate it!

Oh yeah! I had completely forgot that one! Thanks for reminding me!

Yeah, I guess I will just lock myself in the basement and play dnd with my imaginary friends who are the only ones to accept my custom rules...

Wow! 80's commercials! Some of these disney cartoons were already mentioned. They were made in the mid-90s but they weren't as good as duck tales or darkwing duck. Besides, I was already too old to watch them when they came out: Bonkers Goof Troop Aladdin http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=beUCxOYioJ8 Timon and Pumba http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mw4E89kD4yk

Transformers, GI Joe, He-Man? Darkwing Duck? Though Transformers did outsource their animation to Japan at times and the end of the original series was entirely Japanese. Ch-Ch-Ch-Chip and Dale's... Disney's Silly symphonies and Warner Bros' looney toons are pure western cartoons. There's also all the classics from Disney: the sleeping beauty, snow white, the sword in the stone, bambi, etc etc etc

Just 3 more: Sonic the hedgehog Samurai Pizza cats Sharky and George The peek area for cartoons were the 80s and early 90s. I really feel sorry for those kids who watch today's poor quality pc-made cartoons. Ours were hand-drawn 100%. And the opening songs just rocked! All we get today are manga-inspired stuff. It's not that I dislike animes, quite the opposite... It's just that western comics and cartoons should have kept their own style. I could list many other cartoons but those are mostly european, belgian and french to be more specific. I don't think you would recognize them...
