  1. Unfortunately we won't be getting any more toggles, as they take too much dev time. Anyway my question was answered directly by a Dev, so Mods can lock this thread if they like.
  2. Durgan's Battery is in the mountains, in White March. If we happen to visit that location at some point (it's a legendary location that they must have written for a reason) it might be at a high enough elevation for snow.
  3. If a tactic is clearly an unintended exploit or a Talent is such an obvious choice that taking anything else is pointless, of course I'm going to tune it down. If we balance the game ignoring "no duh" options, then anyone who takes that path will find the game to be significantly less challenging. If we balance the game assuming everyone is taking relatively overpowered options, it narrows the range of viable character concepts considerably. First of all I will say that the effort and dedication that goes into balancing a huge game properly is monumental and we all thank you for it. However, I am going to make a case for "niche builds" that could be considered overpowered. There are two types of players that like niche builds. Players that actively wish to use their knowledge of the game's mechanics to generate the builds themselves, and the players who wish to passively take advantage of these builds. Both sides of the coin pursue the knowledge of niche builds out of a desire for player satisfaction. The Active player derives satisfaction from the process of manipulating the underlying mechanics to find interesting and innovate alternatives to normal play, generally leaning toward being overpowered because "beating things to death as effectively as possible" is usually an easy target in a game with combat. The Passive player derives satisfaction from being able to make the "right" choice. By taking advantage of the Active player's quest for clever exploitation, the passive player rests easy knowing that they can make a correct decision in the giant maze of choices that some RPGs present in this day and age. For some people, choice is simply anxiety. Removing "wrong" choices does not alleviate this anxiety. It increases Apathy about the game's systems. When all the choices are the same, none of them matter. It makes it much more clear that they are just numbers in a RNG generator. I use the word "niche" to describe these overpowered builds because the majority of players will never encounter them. They can exist for those players who derive satisfaction from both finding and passively following them, while simply being invisible to those who don't spend hours and hours on internet forums looking for information. Just my thoughts.
  4. I've been wondering the same thing. Some rpg's it feels mandatory to actually have the "priest" class in party, some it doesn't. There is a lot less emphasis on healing in PoE due to the lore, so I don't think it will feel necessary. The priest in the BB is mostly a strong Buffer/Debuffer with some offensive spells thrown in. Definitely some endurance regen but it doesn't seem to be the focus.
  5. I'm conflicted as to whether I'd want to build Eder as a Tank because his character concept was originally a rogue, which is all damage. It might go against his backstory/personality. However, we shall see. And yes, the penalties for wearing heavy armor in this game seem pretty steep, but again I'll probably try my best to ignore them for roleplaying purposes. Keep in mind that you probably won't know which characters you want to play with until you meet them. If you care about the "soul" of a companion, there will probably be certain companions you will like over others regardless of class. I am personally going to try and keep three characters in the front line and three in the back, but who knows if that will work out.
  6. One of the first things I did when I started playing the backer beta was turn off these ugly indicators. Then I promptly realized "oh ****, now I have no idea what's going on" and promptly turned them back on. It's currently a bit of a no win situation. After playing the EE editions of both games, I really miss the "action icon over portrait" feature.
  7. ...again.. uhm.. Why? For me at least, there is a conflict between the Razer drivers and the Oculus Rift DK2 headset.
  8. Personally, I always hated Lilarcor, the Sentient Blade. However, it did occur to me that other possibly sentient swords could actually be cool, dropping comments in combat. And in the world of Pillars of Eternity, with the themes presented and the way souls work, you could arguably "simply" have it be a matter of an animated sword, as in a Vessel imbued with a Soul through Animancy. To be fair, you were *supposed* to hate Lilarcor. It's right there in its backstory, haha.
  9. - In previous interviews members of the team have hinted that if we are completionists we will have access to "A huge amount of ridiculous items." Will any of these items directly increase a stat to a set value, like the gauntlets of dexterity and the belts of strength?
  10. Interesting to hear a favorable opinion from someone that doesn't know much about / isn't obsessed with the IE games. Most believe this will be a niche game, but it might reach farther than we think!
  11. The "scout to find hidden items" was another thing that I found out about completely by accident, but I don't mind it being tied to mechanics as you'd want your sneaky character to be a master of unlocking anyway. It doesn't make as much sense as perception, but hey, like Josh said "q: Why does might improve gun damage = a: shut the **** up" .
  12. - Though the focus of Pillars of Eternity is a small-ish area in the Eastern Reach, do you ever plan on releasing a larger map that encompasses the known world? - Will the characters that were previously join-able companions still be present somewhere in the game? I could easily see the Cipher Detective Orlan still being around as a sort of representative of their organization, for example. - Will you continue to iterate on classes and abilities as patches are released going forward, or are such things (for the most part) nailed down? Could we expect, for example, that halfway through our playthrough our class abilities change in some major way? - Did you manage to squeak enough variety out of the magic item backers to prevent their being 150 magic longswords lying around?
  13. You'll be fine, just make sure not to have any browsers or anything open while you play. If I leave Firefox or Chrome open while playing the backer beta (4GB ram, here) the loading times are atrocious.
  14. Well for slow-folk like me I'd suggest at least a loading screen message or somesuch . As far as I could tell, the spell descriptions do have some notes about AoE but it generally seems to refer to whether or not the spell on the whole is foe-only or does have a friendly fire risk. You are right in that I didn't look and the Int glossary description, only the character creator blurb (which honestly, should at least mention it).
  15. So, I've played the backer beta for about 10 hours so far, I had absolutely no idea until this interview: http://www.pcworld.com/article/2886976/pillars-of-eternity-josh-sawyer-talks-mods-pc-first-focus-big-head-mode-and-more.html that all AOE's have a bonus area that does not cause friendly fire. I really hope the game proper makes this clear at some point to the player or I think many people are going to miss this. I knew that Int increased AOE radius, but not that the radius was Foe Only. That makes it *much* more appealing.
  16. I don't get the Eothas love... he's dead! ... Probably! I only worship gods that exist, thankyouverymuch... Oh.. I get it. Death Godlike. Eothas. Funny.
  17. Don't you guys have interns? . If I lived near the studio I would totally copy edit causally shot cellphone footage for free.
  18. I also encountered this bug, and it persisted through the save file. It was on a Mace instead of a Chant, but the text was the same. Glad to hear it's been fixed up.
  19. Steam has Playtime, Easy Updates, All of my Collection in one Place, and Achievements. So, steam first. However, once the game has been out a year I'll likely buy the GoG version too just for posterity, and burn it on an archival disc.
  20. Hey, I can't do anything about requests in bad taste . This is the internet after all... DeviantArt and Google are a good place to look, but honestly with some of the races it either takes luck or rediculous persistence to find something appropriate. However, keep in mind that with a little bit of photoediting you can turn an almost-right portrait into a perfect portrait. If anyone has that problem (You need the skin to be a different color or the eyes to glow or something) feel free to PM me.
  21. I am a prolific backstory writer. When I play a DnD campaign I literally write a novella sometimes about my character. The quote in question comes from my character's journal wherein he is directly addressing someone from his past that raised him but never spoke to him. It's sort of a "f*** you, I'll do good by you even if you were a ****ty Dad." which is a common enough struggle for folk. Of course I can't help a bit of flowery writing, besides .
  22. Remember that it's been a couple hundred years since the two big Civs arrived, and not only that but the Glanfathans and White March Dwarves have been next to the Ixamitl for some time. That's plenty of time for news to spread about another culture, even if it's (probably) all glossed over hearsay. The game is set at the beginning of a time where the world is shrinking, where mysterious far off lands are getting less mysterious by the day.
  23. You serious, bro? Some people's kids... http://i.imgur.com/pOH7BYb.jpg
