Survey for the future
khermann replied to Sking's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
It would have been simpler to just skip to the Pathfinder sections because it doesn't at all look like a survey, it looks like an announcement that Obsidian is making a pathfinder game and is trying to justify it to someone internally. -
I'd assume this would be near impossible to do if the only reason Paradox signed on in the first place was to be able to foot the bill for rewards. Rewards are not diverted funds for the game, it's profits. The assumption is the game will be funded before rewards ; that's the whole point. They basically said they would prefer to keep the money for themselves than spend the money on better physical rewards. The map is one area they basically said "do whatever is cheapest that will fulfill our contract obligation from the kicksarter". Which appears to be someone's kid with an inkjet printer, a pair of scissors, and a weekend to kill.

Sorry, brother. It was a plumb dandy, though! Pulled Homemade Chicken Salad on Oat with sprouts, cucumber, tomato, bacon, cheddar and light honey mustard. Toasted. A finer sandwich you could not ask for in all the Valley! As for the map... you know a friend of mine put it in really good context today. It's like being told you're going to get an annual bonus at work, but it ends up being a coupon to the company store. You just don't feel appreciated and you can have a reaction like "nothing would be better than this" because at least then you wouldn't know they were just trying to placate you with something that cost them absolutely as little as possible.

Is anyone else starting to get a little miffed that nobody at Obsidian will man up and at least acknowledge this? I'm guessing they feel it is a total non issue. They fulfilled their contractual obligations and our opinions are subjective. Why not find the balls to come in here and just tell us to eat it, then? ... i need a sandwich. EDIT; Typo

Sigh. That wasn't his question. He wasn't asking "How do i know that I'm being detected?" ... i mean, that's incredibly obvious when playing, he's not retarded. what he's asking is "Why am I being detected?" , there really nothing in the game that informs what causes detection and what aids it. No indication of how "covered" you are, it's just this somewhat arbitrary slider of "being detected" and "detected!" I've snuck up behind people in fields in the middle of the day and had better sneak success than in a dark dungeon, both against humans, both from behind. I will support his point that there is really very little in the environment that you can count on to help or hinder your detection ability other than whether or not someone is facing in your direction , which isn't much.

No. The map is so thin and flimsy i doubt it would survive a day hike. It's actually thinner than stock paper. Still bummed about this. As for the rest, the hardcover book as I mentioned is decent, but outdated. The mousepad is a bulk neoprene absokutely-nothing-special mousepad with the cover art on it. It's not washed out like the map at least, but pretty much a throwaway mousepad I will never use. The iron on badges are fine. The pamphlets are fine, also outdated compared to the digital kit. Overall the digital media is far more impressive in scope, coverage and detail. As far as the box contents, it's all for show as far as I'm concerned. Something to put on your bookcase and talk about when you have gamer friends over. It's a good thing the game itself is turning out to be fan-****ing-tastic, which helps me to look past the cheap ass merch, but i am still truly disappointed with the map. I wish they would step up and replace them, even for a fee (you cheap bastards, lol jk) .. They have to know and acknowledge they are total crap.

Yes. When you express intolerant opinions and openly declare yourself to be an intolerant person, you can expect people to call you intolerant. Thanks, though, I needed a good laugh and your post really brightened up my day. "I refuse to acknowledge trans folks as human beings, but srsly some of my best friends are gay. Wait I'm a bigot?? HOW CAN THIS BE?! Curse you, hyperbolic politically correct blameless victim society that television has relegated US discourse (whatever that means)!" Hehehe, ahhh, pure gold. I wish I could make up stuff this funny. Funny, attacking the person instead of the argument. Intolerance is not defacto a negative thing. You need to open your mind up and step back from your own prejudices. Thanks for the laugh though.

The ninja stat stacking is a huge bug. Any developer worth their Aero chair will tell you it only takes one bad bug to ruin a game. A game built on character stats for balance and the designed, intended gameplay that experiences a hidden, ilunintentional stacking modification to those stats is, without question, a game-breaking bug. Can you still play? Sure, but you're not playing PoE, you're playing some other game nobody intended. Drop. Mic.

I don't even know the limerick in question, i'm just saying I am a very liberal-leaning progressive who has many gay and lesbian friends, but transgenders universally creep me out. It doesn't mean i don't want them to vote or marry or anything, i just cannot identify with them at a human level which isn't a problem for me with my gay and leabian friends. In the hyperbolic politically correct blameless victem society that television has relegated US discourse, across all sexual identities, this paints me as intolerant. Good job.

Being repulsed by something =/ a fear of it. Unless you're actually afraid of cross dressers or folks who like to mutilate their genitalia and perhaps replace it with the genitalia of the opposite sex via surgery then you have no such phobia. Repulsion often leads to phobia, though, and particularly to very negative and unwarranted behaviour towards the person they irrationally find "repulsive". Repulsion is a natural instinct meant to keep us alive. we see dead stuff rotting, we are repulsed, because our reptilian conditioning knows that is a vector for disease and death. If you want to socialize that, sure, go crazy, but it's a totally different thing when you start talking about behavior and how people are treated. I don't mistreat transgender people, I am as polite and respectful to them as I am anyone, but I still want nothing to do with them at a visceral level. It's not bigotry, I understand what is going on, and I'm okay with it. Believe it or not, just because someone doesn't like you and doesn't want to be your best friend doesn't mean they can't respect you and give you the same fair treatment they give others. It's called being an adult and accepting diversity. A negative view is cast for many reasons and not all of them are a reflection of character or social grace. People who want to make these arguments in to black and white tolerance issues are the people I have no time for, no matter what gender they think they are.

This is my overall take, but as I said, the cloth map was a draw for me. I also seriously doubt as many people who say they back "just for the game" (how noble) would still have put in as much if everyone got nothing but the game in return. There is a reason backer rewards exist, and it's not to add value to the gamer's experience like they would have you believe, it's simply to drive sales, so I feel absolutely fine about kicking Obsidian in the nuts for delivering crappy physical merch. It's insulting, and everyone just wants to say "oh oh it's the game man it's about the game" ... don't be so naive.

transphobic? Is that a word? does it mean a phobia of transgender people? because I think I have that. Not in a cognitive way, i mean, to each their own, but when I see and talk with a transgender person I have a visceral repulsion and something deep down is informing me that the entire situation is unhealthy and I should try to find a way to politely remove myself from the situation. I'm not intolerant if I understand something, yet find it to be repulsive.

Yup. I sadly learned this in the intermediate time between when I backed PoE and now. CIG (Star Citizen) , with all their millions, can't even bring themselves to offer physical goods that are not lowest effort, lowest cost chinese crap. I think it's pretty clearly a way to play on peoples' hopes just to bait and switch them later. All with the best intentions, but when it comes time to put up real money for real rewards they turn chicken-sh*t and basically rationalize to themselves that "well they really want this money to go in to the game (read: my profits) , so we'll just go ahead and order the slave-labor tier so we can fulfill our contractual KS obligations" It's not just Obsidian, every software title does this. I can't even think of good physical swag for a software title since maybe Ultima. I'm totally done with backing for physical goods, and expect all software devs to go the cheapest possible route on all backer rewards. This is sadly what they have all taught me.

Ahahaha, your map will be a blank rag because by now the printer ink is surely depleted. So sad, I just got mine yesterday and this is exactly what I thought. The map is objectively terrible and cheap. Paper-thin, terrible feel like it was bathed in starch. Unredable, blurry, washed-out, and tiny. The map was the one thing in the box that I was really looking forward to as a collector's item and honestly I'm pretty disappointed it's such a piece of crap. edit: typos

I got my collector's box yesterday. The only thing that isn't complete trash is the Handbook. I like that quite a bit, nice touch using the classic form factor and format of the classic D&D books - that's nice. If's obvious every penny went in to the book and the rest, including NPC integration, was done on "least effort, lowest cost" -- the map is absolute sh*t. It's unreadable, cheap, and tiny. When I look at it all i can hear is the groan of Obsidian realizing they over-committed on their high end backer rewards, because that's how I feel. Thankfully I backed because I wanted a great game, and so far that appears to be what I got (pending a patch), so I'm not too upset about it, and frankly kind of suspected they would phone in the backer rewards once it became obvious it would be a big challenge for them to just get the game out the door. Hopefully I helped send someones kid to college, but a sports car fund is also acceptable
