  1. Awareness is a pretty important step in rooting out any extremist groups, so I don't really get the cynicism. Boko Haram was hardly on the mainstream radar before all this went down. Now they are likely going to face immense pressure from many different organizations, and their days are pretty much numbered. Let's not forget that the Taliban spent 5 years doing terrible things in Afghanistan before it became a big deal, but once it became an international issue they were out of power relatively quickly, and they now struggle for legitimacy. Al Qaeda has an even bleaker story, these groups aren't growing stronger under international attention. Boko Haram is the new big thing and it will end badly for them.
  2. Thanks guys. I did try to stay calm and cool as Raithe said, and I decided to call because email is a terrible way to communicate this stuff. It didn't go particularly well. One of the reasons she is emailing me now is because an old friend of mine is getting married, and they were invited. I'm in the wedding party, so of course my wife and I will be attending. As the conversation took a turn for the worse, my mother said "well maybe we just shouldn't go to the wedding" and I may have answered with "Yeah, I was surprised you were going." She hung up shortly thereafter. Anyways I'll try to apologize in an email and see where that goes.
  3. Bleh, I got an email from my mother about our estrangement. Trying to figure out a way to respond. We are estranged because my family said terrible things about my wife, and yet she makes no mention of my wife in her email. Get a fricken clue.
  4. I cook the bleu cheese inside the burger. Delicious.
  5. Their cut scenes are cutting edge though, so it's not like they disregard graphics.
  6. Huh, I figured this was just vaporware
  7. I also don't cook meat all that often, and the gas grill is very easy to do veggies on. But yeah, I've heard that meat tastes better over charcoal.
  8. I think mine is like a $500 version. I got it cheap off a friend for $100, and it has been well worth that. Not to knock charcoal, I'm just too lazy.
  9. I love my gas grill. It's a pretty nice Weber, and it's so fast to heat up. It grills fairly evenly too, although one side is faster than the other. That works fine since I just put the veggies on the fast side and the meat on the slower side. It really makes BBQing quick.
  10. Yeah I'm up to 36 and it has been flying by. Although apparently once you hit 50 you still level quite a bit, they just call them Veteran Ranks.
  11. The Spurs as the White Walkers was inspired.
  12. Law & Order: Red Streak Edition It does look very good.
  13. Yeah I wouldn't try to cheat it, you don't want to do anything that might make you have to restart it. It is supposed to be a bit punitive, although as Labadal said, go do something else while it is running. I did it a few years back, it's better than the class, that's for sure.
  14. Clearly we need to have a Crocodile Dundee thread about knife sizes.
  15. Heh, you do reach an age where coasters are no longer fun.
  16. It's just a label folks, it doesn't have to mean something bigger. My baseball game lets me play the role of a minor league ballplayer trying to break into the bigs, and it has an amazing amount of statistical detail and freedom of character. But we call it a sports game because that's the easy thing to do.
  17. How many of those are just handling localization? It was something stated in a marketing presentation for investors, so I wouldn't read much into it. We've seen plenty of patchwork games in the past, but non of the AC games have seemed anything like that. The worst I ever saw was Everquest 2, they had like 4 different art teams and no real cohesion.
  18. Most kids are smart enough to delineate between playful teasing and cruelty. Although everybody is different, I have students I know I can banter back and forth with and those I wouldn't dare. That one boy who started hitting and then chucked the water bottle at the parent would be in huge trouble, for example. It's an inappropriate reaction to the situation. It's also about establishing perspective. I don't want my children taking their hoard of candy too seriously. They are going to look back on their reaction and see that it was silly, that candy is not something you should become overly attached to. And again, it's about letting off some steam. My children torture me on a daily basis. They are wonderful and amazing, but they are also a huge pain in the rear. If I took this job seriously all the time, I would not survive it. This morning I asked my son if he wanted juice or chocolate milk, and he said juice. I went and made it. He took one sip, then handed it back to me and said he wanted a chocolate milk instead. I was exasperated, and he just shrugged and smiled. I go through things like that about a dozen times a day. It adds up.
  19. If time means nothing, constructing infinite complexity would also mean nothing. At least I think so. Easy come, easy go, right. Yeah, let me just tell you that 7th graders have a ridiculous concept of time. If it didn't happen in the last month, it might as well have been forever ago.
  20. I don't get how making children cry equals funny. Oh look, the kids are miserable and crying, ha ha. To me that's mean, not funny. Maybe I'm weird like that. It's probably more funny if you are a parent. Teasing your kids is a huge help in not going crazy, it's a tough job. For the most part, they deserve it. I think I'd feel worse if my kid was all ok about it. I get in trouble on a regular basis for eating my kids candy though. My wife and daughter have some pretty elaborate hiding spots.
  21. It took me awhile, but I found it streaming on Hulu. I'm watching it now.
  22. Heh, you more of just a relentless skeptic.
  23. Nationality, political affiliation, and religion have nothing to do with how horrible this situation is, and we should all have great empathy for the girls and families involved. #bringbackourgirls applies to anyone who is not a monster.
  24. Hah, that's awesome, we need to make sure everyone calls him Brayko when this game comes out. It looks like a cool setting, Far Cry 3 was pretty great, so I'll pick this one up.
