Violent video game law scotched by US judge
ShadowPaladin V1.0 replied to metadigital's topic in Computer and Console
So would giving them a game that would cause psychological harm. And your just supposed to know which catagory yours fall into ? Yes but then you leave the way open for equally irresponsible parents (like the ones buying their 12 year old beer). The law would actually protect children from such parents. -
Yes.

Oblivion is the best CRPG ever made

My clock shows 60 something hours for two characters. In all honesty I'd have probably stopped playing sooner if Dragon Quest didnt slip a week. But I have no regrets on either the game or buying the 360 to play the game. It wasnt "great" but it was fun. Probably would have still been playing it had we not gone on that mad 360 rental spree. Just so I can be happy smiley Dragon Quest The Journey of the Cursed King + Official Strategy Guide Being Picked Today 1 -
Won't miss it then.

Should parents be able to buy 18 rated games for 12 year olds ? What if you saw a parent walk into a store , buy some beer. Then give it to thier 12 year old kid outside ? Is that good parenting ? -

I think Oblivion is quite mainstream. Very simple, not much reading required , looks and plays a lot like an FPS. I'd be suprised if it didnt sell at least a million. Dosnt hurt that there isnt much else on the 360 of note either. I think that was much the same story with Morrowind on the Xbox. -
You know it's spring when you play your first game of golf of the year and totally suck. last years handicap 16 this years 27 (max is 28)

Thinking of Replaying...

I like Peragus. It's about the only time I never felt uber and it has a nice feeling of isolation. Malachor is kind of non descript and at that point the game lacks any sort of challenge. It is kind of fun blasting through the myriad Sith though makes you feel godlike. -

Well if one of my kids is sick I take them to a doctor I dont try to treat them myself. So it's quite natural that parents should look towards qualified "experts" for guidence when it comes to what you should and should not be exposing your children to. It's a nice idea. But in the real world quitting your job isnt an option for most people. People need to eat, pay the rent , that sort of thing. Some people are clearly unfit to be parents for a number of reasons. But if people object to something as trivial as rating of games. Not likely you will see any intervention in that area. -

Are parents universaly qualified to do that ? -

Problem with that is , you can't have an NPC that is significantly more powerful than the PC. It's just not satisfying. It's ok at the start of a game (Ben coming along with Luke) but not at the end where it should be the PC's story.

Should there be a picture there because I'm not seeing anything.

Yes but I picked a level that you could normally reach just by following the story and not sitting around killing spawns.

It's not like you can fast forward through a game. Yes it is. But it's also perfectly understandable why it's very difficult for some parents to find the sort of time video game policing would require. I'm sure most of them have at some point. Something that always struck me as ironic about anti porn protesters was they would have an almost encyclopedic knowledge of porn. Like any restrictive activity if people complain the government tends to get involved. Again you can say the same thing about anything. Drinking, smoking, driving ,take your pick. So unless you take as more than it is. It's really rather trivial since it dosnt even apply to adults and it's about rating and not censoring. -

Well lets take sports. Your looking at maybe a couple of hours on the weekend plus whatever time to practice you can fit in. Thats nothing like having to pre-veiw a 20 hour game, assuming you even have the skills to do that. What you can learn ,well that depends entirely on the game. Thats another thing that makes it different. Games are not one thing. Each one is an entirely different entity. Like saying Alcohol isnt suitable for anyone under 18 you mean ? -
Sounds a lot like an Atlus game.

Actually being gamers I think we take that forgranted a bit. Would you really have the time to pre play every game your child wanted to play ? Most parents would not have that luxury (unless they neglected something else to do so). Now that games are almost cinema realistic if watching a film for X ammount of time can be deemed harmful. Then it's not a stretch to believe that playing a game for X* ammount of time (since games are generally longer than movies) will be equally so. Thats before you start worrying about that you are a participant in whatever is going on in a game, rather than an observer. Otherwise a parents way of becoming informed would not do the industry any favours (since it would be by reading about stuff like GTA in the papers). Ratings are preferable to that sort of sensationalism. -
That's impossible to say since the field of competition is so thin. Think someone already answered that. Your still overlooking the point that if Interplay had not said "you dont want to make an RTS , you want to make an AD&D RPG" then BG would not have been made. Your still overlooking the coinciendence of approaching Interplay with the RTS idea (iron throne wasnt it ?) just as IP wanted another AD&D game. As for the rest. Well obviously they have talent at what they do. Thats pretty obvious. But they are hardly competing in crowded field either.
-
Who else was there ? Nice. Except I never did that. Where as you have not offered any plausable explanation of why Bioware got to make BG. Face it without that lucky break they may not have even made an RPG call it undiscovered talent if you like, it really dosnt matter to me.
-
Yep I was thinking about tossing the player out in a mecha without a control scheme so they could share the panic with the character. Maybe lable some buttons according to the characters talents. And then just to be really evil, randomise the control scheme every time you reload. (only until you work out how it functions of course).
-
Never said that. I said they got lucky with IP because of the AD&D property. Well what I am saying and what you are seeing dont appear to be the same thing.
-
Why Bioware was offered other games. I've never even brought up the people who buy them. If I was a publisher between the time of BG and KOTOR who would I go to to make an RPG ? Bioware. Why would I go to Bioware ? Because they made BG/II. Actually I pointed out the other games up until JE all were based on well established properties. Well it's a conspiracy theory you invented because thats not even what I was talking about. So we went from an RTS game with no D&D elements to an AD&D RPG and you call me dellusional
