  1. Quick summary is basically how far should the depiction of violent acts go. More related to RPGs at first but we branced out. Stuff like dismembering children came up and using immortal babies as fire breaks (sims apparently). I had a dig around and RPGs seem to be under the radar , personally I'd rather keep it that way.
  2. She can crop up in hologram form a couple of times and in person once (as far as i'm aware) it all depends on how you answer Atton at the start.
  3. You cant say that any more than you can say they commited them because of GTA. GTA is a very popular game amoung joy riders. Then you get the chicken egg scenario which is did they start joy riding because it was the next step. It's like the causal link for pornography, or did they pick up on GTA because it suited their "lifestyle". It's all about contributing factors, there are no absolutes even when child A becomes a wife beater because his father was. Child b on the other hand is happily married and not a wife beater. Therefore you cant say just because your father beat your mother that you will beat your wife, dosnt work that way.
  4. If the game is the catalyst then it's equally to blame. Games are part of society. You cant just include the parts of society that suit you when it comes to social developement. Games CAN be a catalyst for such actions. That is also indisputable.
  5. That one is a mystery to me too. It does seem to be a more American thing though dosnt it ?
  6. Actually with games being as prolific as they have become it's almost a certainty that many criminals have played games at some point. Games are part of society and thus learning. If you believe that nurture plays a part in social development (which you obviously do since you just said it) then games as part of society are a part of it. Seeking to absolve them just because[you dont like the implications] is no better than trying to blame them for every social ill that occurs.
  7. And equally there are players who abslutely thrive on being as evil as they can. People are different there are no absolutes here. No black and white, no easy answers.
  8. If thats supposed to be an insult you missed the mark by a mile. Yes when you are the observer viewing that sort of thing can evoke sympathy. BIG difference here in a game your not the observer your the instigator.
  9. Last I looked it was Dragon Lance the new generation. Which is a bit out of date. In the last novel I read something apocalyptic happened and the gods left Krynn. Looks like it's moved on again since then. Heres a blurb from one of the new campaign sets. The Fifth Age of Krynn
  10. You have to wonder about the sort of people who want that sort of thing in a game, or a movie for that matter. Personally I see no reason to indulge their sick and twisted fantasies, whether they be virtual or a sign of something more serious.
  11. Something like that Dragon Lance has changed a lot though.
  12. If you call that dumbed down I'd love to see what you made of Jade Empires combat system.. EPIII combat dosnt really take off until you buy a few levels , it's quite RPG like in that respect. I think dueling Mace and the apprentice with twin sabers would be my personal highlights.
  13. Merceneries was a top notch game, probably even moreso because it didnt come with much in the way of expectations. It's always better to be pleasently suprised than disapointed by not meeting expectations.
  14. Racism is kind of at the core of most RPG's although because it's in a form that is barely recognisable its not bad. D&D especially tends to have a they are bad just because they are XX approach. I was playing one of the Fire Emblem games earlier ,and a thought struck me. It's not really about child killing per se, but rather killing of unarmed non combatant children. The closer you get to reality the more difficult it becomes. As I said RPGs have a kind of inherent protection as they generally dont depict reality in the way something like Battle Field does. All in all though not bad guidlines.
  15. Mandalore as a Jedi would be like a prototype Darth Vader :D
  16. I think that putting the person in the role of instigator rather than observer also magnifies the effect. I remember playing Manhunt for the first time, at first it I was quite shocked, not so much by the violence, but rather that it could make it into a game. By the time I'd been playing for a couple of hours, suffocating people with plastics bags, sticking shards of glass through their eyes and caving in their skulls with crowbars (all in slow mo close up cut scene esque detail) had become routine.
  17. I think your underestimating just how suggestable children can be. Dont forget we are not talking about a 5 second exposure here, or even a 2 hour movie but something that should "ideally" be pushing 60 hours of gameplay. Children copy all the time, thats why shows like PowerRangers come with a disclaimer. BTW if you search you should be able to find a couple of instances where children were hurt copying things from that show.
  18. In games with evil endings, you do get away with it. You get your evil reward, and the game then ends.
  19. It's not POW and they are a Jedi. Rather that from that point on they train "on the job". They still develop powers over the course of the game and unless you hold back levels (which borders on cheating) there is no instant powerful jedi effect. What tends to be missing is the same sort of training as you get from Kreia or the sort of movie style "training". You never see the Exile train anyone in the same way as Kreia trains you. The advantage of having a single padawan is that the designers can devote for more time to the character.
  20. True, but in the context of what they are talking about I think it's pretty clear what the actual meaning is.
  21. The clue is in reading the code of the Sith.
  22. The force just happens to be top of her list, but it's not the only thing on it.
  23. I dont know anyone who dosnt like Lego SW, except for a couple of people who take the whole thing way too seriously and are quite frankly a bit creepy.
  24. Gun terminology. The word barrel comes from the very earliest canon which were manufactured from wood and iron hoops.
  25. In the movie Yoda says they can no longer detect the darkside, although it's never explained why. Just a plot device to get away with him hiding under their noses I expect. What Kreia does is different since they are not even aware that she exists at all.
