  1. It really just plays into Freuds explanation of why man created god. god makes sense because you want the same reasurance at that time that a child would look to a parent for. I have no particular problem with religion as long as it always defers to evidence.
  2. Kameo ? I'm really wondering if it's the disk space issue rearing it's head.
  3. You mean this ? http://shop.gameplay.co.uk/webstore/produc...sb_access_point
  4. You could equally ask why there are works of fiction. Because without faith that is exactly what they are. The way I see it you have two choices. 1. You can admit that every religion is valid. After all the Egyptian Religion , Norse , Greek/Roman etc. all have a mythos that is as rich and creative as the christian one. 2. You can admit that they are all made up by people for the purpose of security. Christianity just happens to be the latest popular one and has no more credibility than any that has gone before. Well one of the biggest dangers of religion is that it is open to interpretation. And that interpretation does not need to be based on rationality. Sounds to me like you have made up your own religion. Not that there is anything wrong with that. It's not uncommon at all even for devout "whatevers" to ignore the bits in the respective teachings that they dont like.
  5. Genji - 10 hours Gun - 5 or 6 hours Kong - 5 or 6 hours Sucks to be anyone who pays
  6. In sense of the crucifiction , thats more of a sacrifice. It's very similiar to a concept the aztecs has whereby one of there gods would slice his own scrotum from which would flow the stuff of life. This same ritual was then performed by the king (who says it's good to be king) in much the same way as you get the symbolic offering of the body and the blood performed by priests. The crucifiction also has parrelels with Odin who impaled himslef on a tree with his own spear in order to become divine and all knowing. Although he had to pluck out his own eye too.
  7. Yes but it can equally inspire acts of hatred and intollerance. I point you to the definition of the word suicide. 1 : the act or an instance of taking one's own life voluntarily and intentionally Throwing yourself on a grenade is in the same general catagory as throwing yourself into the path of a train or bus. Thats not to say that one should not admire the bravery of the act. Especially by a person who dosnt believe in an afterlife. Suicide is viewed differently by different cultures too. All I would say in regard to aethiests is they are not likely to be any more good and evil than religious people. There just would not be any ulterior motive for their actions.
  8. Giving up your life has nothing to do with religion. Lest you forget suicide is not looked upon kindly, yet it's the same thing you are knowingly taking your own life. That you are doing it to save the lives of others is pure semantics. Trying to attribute all acts of goodness to religion whilst disavowing the bad seems to me hypocritical.
  9. What why would an aethiest dive on a grenade to save a friend ? Since it's not something I'd be inclined to do, not something I can answer. But it does happen so self sacrfice is not confined only to people who believe in god. I know many aethiests who are still humanitarians. Although I wouldnt say I was one since I tend to stick all life on the same shelf.
  10. Plenty of people who don't believe are not relgious or believe in god are nobel. Aethiests have thrown themselves on grenades to save friends just the same. Actually I'd be much more inclined to believe an aethiests motive as pure since they have no reason to be scoring points like some christians do.
  11. Fire Emblem on the GC.
  12. It's about time someone thought of this, but the Nintendo Wi-Fi gaming serivice dosnt allow communication between players. Let your skillz do the talking :D Also it keeps all those evil peodophilles from chatting up your kids. It's released here next friday (UK obviously).
  13. Hades reminds me so much of Soren from Path of Radience it's uncanny.
  14. What he said. There are plenty of moral people who have had no exposure to christianity. There are plenty of immoral people who have.
  15. Jesus saves.... .....But Rooney scores on the rebound.
  16. Can't say it did. Although it was indeed a fantastic game. I'd usually play the Gains or Morgan hows that for extreme clash of personality
  17. I don't think that is possible religion dosnt exactly adapt quickly. Plus you cant predict what science will come up with next so trying to plot your religion around it would be next to impossible.
  18. God(s) ? slightly confused here . Religion is the opiate of the masses. Yep if your going to screw over the poor in this life , promising them paradise in the next if they behave is a good method of social control. Every society has constructed their own "father figure". If we go back to the dawn of history the earliest concept was that the ancestors never leave and by keeping them physically we can maintain contact with them. Some societies still bring out these mumified ancestors when important desicions need to be made. Thats really no different that someone praying for guidence if you think about it. If you doubt your ability to make the right choice then asking some "greater entity" dosnt seem like such a bad move. The reason why you never get a completely benevolent god according to Freud (disregarding social control for a moment) is that the human psyche cannot cope with a parent that does not punish. Oh I think all things are cyclic, it's just a matter of appreciating the time scale involved. When one belief system ceases to work we simply create another , thats been the history of religion from the start. The only time this natural process changes is when you change it at the point of a sword. Are you crazy ? Well people who hear voices have often been called crazy (amoung other things) is talking to an imaginery entity crazy ? Probably no more crazy than talking to a mummy if you think about it. I don't really care if someone believes in god or not. Like we said it is functional. However when religion and secular views clash society should always go with the evidence rather than faith if it wants to grow.
  19. Long before that in the time of Akanhaten. It didnt catch on and they returned to the old system.
  20. Well you can believe what you like but that dosnt make me religious Which I'm not by any meaningful definition of the word. The concept of god as a singular entity was first developed by the egyptians I believe.
  21. Ah the functionalist perspective. It dosnt matter if something is real as long as it is functional. Or to put in another way "false hope is better than no hope". This is why I tend to agree with Freud , that religion stems from mans need for a father figure. Or rather in my view that if an adult desires the same comforts as a child, then they need something bigger than themselves to look too. When you consider that there have been 1000's of religions over mankinds history, just because christianity happens to be in vogue right now, dosnt make it any more valid than any other. Just as it replaced previous belief systems I have little doubt that it to will be replaced. Most likely by aethism at which point I would have considered that the human race has grown up.
  22. True, but then again they never really had the whole peace love and forgiveness thing going either.
  23. Yes the church has lost a lot of influence. Reason and religion dont make comfortable bedfellows after all. However where do you get this idea that christ has power ? If it wasnt for Coca Cola , most people wouldnt even be celebrating his symbolic birthday today.
  24. Yes i'm sure the irony of it being spread at the end of a sword isnt lost on anyone.
  25. Depoends really. I saved a fortune when I was playing EQ online. Compared to nights out at the pub, buying other games etc.
