Fluffle replied to Skyleaf's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
It's not EA making these things, it's Bioware. And they're pretty proud about it. Okay all the hate to Bioware then instead That wasn't necessarily my point -

I know I know EA is one of the reasons if not THE reason why many dislike if not outright LOATHE romances in video games. Still, I would like to share this with you: Mass Effect Andromeda's New Approach To Romance So, let's see how the romances in Andromeda will turn out. -
I assume that it simply is not profitable. It's a pure business decision and one that is actually reasonable, as much as I hate it myself. As @AndreaColombo has pointed out I also think it has to do with maintaining the patches. There were quite a lot of problems with maintaining the patches for PoE 1 backer DVD, while at the same time players with a backer DVD are relatively few in comparison to GoG and Steam players. So it does make sense. And as much as it may make sense I simply hate this decision. *sigh* The question is, if - in a few years - when all the patching will have been done, if Obsidian would then be ready to sell actual game discs.

Someone is probably going to come after me for oversharing but I am FAIRLY certain you could replace the watercolor portrait with a (appropriately scaled & cropped) painted portrait as easily as you would override any portrait in POE1. Time to leave before I say anything else! Yeah but then wouldn't you have both types of portraits in a dialogue again? What I would like is to only see the fully painted portraits. So in other words, an option to switch the watercolor portraits completely off.
-
Ah thanks for clearing that up. In the end it would mean we would see the fully painted portraits less often. Ha sorry, I think then I'd prefer no watercolor portraits after all. However this is not a huge "problem" for me. It's just a matter of preference. And I feel like the fully painted portraits should never be replaced. I just like them too much

It's for a unique badge in addition to the Fig badge. And hopefully, this unique badge here will be pirate themed. Concerning the last remark, I think the forum badges should not be aligned in one column, should they? It should be two columns I'd propose. There would even be space for 3 columns in one row.

Okay, Aarik, I have another question. This one concerns all In-Game Custom Portraits. How does the process work? I send in a photograph of myself, I wait a few months, and at some time I will get the final result. Or would I be in contact with the artist over a longer period of time. Say, would the artist show me sketches first, and then the progression, step by step, of the final result? And if I did not like the direction the final portrait was going, would I be able to give feedback? In other words, how exactly does this whole pledging for a custom portrait work in detail.
-
This idea is still ongoing. Currently we are planning to do both, separately and independently from each other. See Aarik's post where he speaks of "Option A" and "Option B" (I copied that post in the opening post of this thread). So "Option A" has in no way been ruled out. Aarik already confirmed that it was absolutely doable. We can found a "pirate order" that would be the equivalent of the "Obsidian Order of Eternity". That is independent from funding the pirate crew and ship in the game.

Correct, it would be an extreme challenge to pull this off with only having limited facial area. In my honest opinion, I would advise going against it, if you are going to spend all that cash to only have your lower face be somewhat resembled. Yep, I think I'd rather not do it then. Not a final decision yet, but it's unlikely. Thanks for helping out

Thanks for letting me know, and thanks for asking the artists. Naturally this rather discourages me, although it makes sense of course. This would be an act of balance. The Death Godlike would have had their face to be covered enough to still count as a Death Godlike, while at the same the face should be covered as little as possible to still resemble me. That is quite a challenge. In the wiki it says: "Strange growths cover their eyes - or, in some case, entire face - giving them a sinister appearance." So I take it, the eyes of a Death Godlike are probably always covered. The question would be how much else of their face *has to be* covered to still count as a Death Godlike.

That is totally fine, no drama there But you could consider this: If you DID take part in this, then you could take extra care to ensure that it will meet certain standards and that this pirate crew (Option B) will not turn out to be "a threat for the consistency and quality of the game"! You could be our quality insurance that way Think about it, this Option B is most likely going to happen anyway, with or without you. By taking part in this you could increase the odds of this being consistent with the quality of the game.

At this point I wonder, why would they bother to put the Steam Installer on the disc then anyway? If they expect us to have an Internet connection and a good one, because we are expected to download the game, then they can expect us to download the Steam Installer. And the Steam Installer is MUCH smaller in space than the entire PoE 2 game. So they could abolish the physical disc altogether. Incidentally this is an ongoing trend in gaming industry. EA does the same with Mass Effect: Andromeda for example. You will not be able to get a physical disc for ME:A.

Hi everyone, I have a question about the Reward tiers "Portrait Ingame". This mostly concerns the Godlikes I imagine. How much will the portrait look like the backer? For example think of a Death Godlike. You'd pay a lot of money, but your face would hardly be recognizable, if at all, because most of your face would actually be covered. Is there a way do make a portrait of a Death Godlike, that looks like a Death Godlike but still resembles the backer? Would that even be possible?

But doesn't this apply to any backer related content in the game? Let's say someone would buy the pirate group + ship alone. In what way would that not be "a threat for the consistency and quality of the game"? It is Obsidian's job to take care that that doesn't happen. And that applies to all backer related content, does it not? And Obsidian already says "some restrictions apply" on the tier rewards. So of course they are aware of this.
