I'm not sure if you're referring to T-shirts maybe? What package did you pledge? If you want more than one item that's offered in a package, you just need to raise your pledge amount, but not your reward.

For example, if you are at the $140 tier and want an extra t-shirt, just change your pledge by adding $25 (to $165) and leave the reward the same. After the kickstarter ends, you will receive an e-mail where you can designate what you wish to purchase with the extra $25.

Does that make sense to you?

  2. I will be opting for GOG so I can own the right to use the license and not a "subscription" to the right to use the license (and I have 686 games currently on Steam).

I only play SP games so the social aspects afforded by the Steam community are lost on me, although I can see the attraction to those who play a lot of MP. Obsidian's choice to offer a DRM-free version was very much a deciding factor in the level of support I ultimately gave to the project.

    Thanks Obsidian!

  3. The point to the thread was to hopefully get people, in general, to think about what they are getting as opposed to what they may not be getting. That seems to be lost on some.

As to Steam, none of us know what arrangements Obz has made with them. Maybe they 'host' these kickstarter pledges for free -- I don't know. I was under the impression that PE was going to be for sale at Steam/GOG post-release. But, again, that's not the point.

  4. There has been some discussion on various threads regarding the 'extras' being allocated to the different tiers. Maybe it's time to use some common sense and logic.

At the $20/$25 tier, people are essentially getting the game at half-price (and a free in-game item).

At $35, they are also giving a digital collector's book and soundtrack.

At $50, they are throwing in the novella and 'fun pack' in addition to the loot in the preceding tiers. This would be the same amount you would spend for a new release (and even less in some cases).

These tiers represent (by today's numbers) over 46,000 of the 55,000 currently backing the project. I, for one, think Obsidian is being quite generous.

From these levels through the $140, Obsidian is adding even more loot to attract pledgers.

From the $140 to the $250/$500, there is little substantive difference except the Collector's hardcover book and the expansion pack and Wasteland 2 (added yesterday).

The expansion pack will, no doubt, be available to pre-order at the appropriate time. The very generous offer to provide keys for Wasteland 2 will result in a loss for either Brian Fargo and/or Obsidian with every key that is activated. Steam (according to Notch) receives 30% for hosting a game.

    http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/07/25/notch-on-why-minecraft-still-isnt-on-steam/

For the sake of argument, it we use $40 as the retail price for PE, Steam would receive $12 for every key activated. Since I seriously doubt Steam is able to differentiate between a $20 pledge key or a $5,000 pledge key, the $12 fee would apply to the $20 pledge as well as the higher tiers. I have no idea how much GOG charges to host a title, but it's not free.

Alot of people say "it's a leap of faith", which it is -- it's a much larger leap the farther up the tiers you go. For that reason, a very few exclusive perks are given to attract people to commit at a higher level, and they should remain that way -- exclusive.

I'm all for offering physical items for sale separately as long as they are different from those being awarded as a "thank you", and the sale of the physical items results in a realistic profit for Obsidian. Since my pledge is a gift, I would happily pay $30 - $40 for a well-made T-shirt with a completely different design than what is being offered on the tiers.

If they were to offer a softcover Collector's book for an amount that would result in a profit, I have no problem with that as long as the hardcover remains an exclusive.

Honestly, how much is enough? I think they are being very generous whilst simultaneously trying to make sure they have adequate funding to make the game. Physical items are the biggest drag on profitability.

Others argue it's not a AAA title so comparisons can't be made. PE represents a chance to be able to actually read and interact with a new world and use my imagination again (sans QTE's and VO) and that's the reason I have pledged at the level I have chosen. To me, it's priceless.

tl;dr This simply isn't the thread for you.

They have already stated that they will be using their own funds to make the expansion.

The expansion is something they were already planning, no doubt, and are simply offering it as a "reward" for higher level tiers.

It will in no way affect the quality or length of the initial game and will not be started until the end of the development cycle or after release. These comments were made in the "Comments" section on the Kickstarter page.

  6. Imho, no, you are not going too far. Having them talk about expansions before even having properly started, far less finished the game is going too far for me. It also strikes me as slapping people in the face who have only little money. Obsidian should never forget that it is the $20 pledges as well as the $10k pledges that help them finance their project. We are pledging our money based on trust, we are not placing pre-orders. Excluding part of their backers at this point already leaves a bad taste for me. And no, this is not the same as just another book or cloth map.

I will most probably pull out of it based on Todays update.

So you feel you're excluded and think Obsidian should give away 50,000+ copies of an expansion pack to everyone who has pledged (even though they'd lose an enormous amount of money).

People at the $20/$25 level are already getting the game at what is effectively half-price, but that's not enough?

The door is that way ------>>>>>

  7. Btw, were the $250 and $500 tiers reduced to only 1 digital download each? I thought they had 2 each, when I last looked.

But maybe my memory is just playing tricks on me...?

Question: Aren't there normally 3 copies of PE in total at 250 and 500 ?

I just see two right now : the box plus a digital copy. So is the extension taking the place of one previous copy ?

I can't help but feel that the 500 tiers is seriously lacking -__-

Feargus: We will take a look at those and make sure they are correct.

  8. The way I see it is Obsidian are giving a free expansion to a very small amount of investors at a loss. While the majority of people will have to buy the expansion when it's finally released.

    Exactly.

    From the Comments Sections:

"we have updated the last update and are letting everyone know that we are not using the Kickstarter money to fund the expansion. That money will come from us. All the money that we get from Kickstarter will go into the core Project Eternity game."

It is simply a tier reward like the Collector's Book and the expansion pack will be available for purchase down the road.

  9. From the Comments Section:

Question: Just FYI Obsidian have already comment on the update comments as follows:

"All the funding that we receive from Kickstarter and PayPal will be used to make the base game - No money raised will be used for funding the expansion in any way."

Feargus: Yes, we are going to fund it ourselves and from the sales we get from Project Eternity when it comes available - not from Kickstarter funds. I don't think we will do a Kickstarter just for it, I'd rather see about funding the sequel that way - if you guys will still have us. :)

  10. I'm sure people's' reasons for donating at any given level are varied, but first, and foremost, they want to support the project to the best of their ability and believe in the development team. However, the 'personalized message' was added because they gave the next lower level a hardcover Collector's Book which had been exclusive to that tier.

You need to think of a different concept - you've already been ninja'd by the development team on this particular idea.

  11. Tombstones would be cooler. And with flavour silly text comment when clicked.

That idea may fall too close to their latest change in the tier rewards:

"Additionally for our $500 backers and above, we will let you put your name and a personalized message on a memorial stone in game. Your unique message will be encoded into Glanfathan runes, and can be decoded using a unique in-game ring. It's a way for all of us to remember your large contribution to Project Eternity."

  12. @Neversleep

It's a slippery slope, as you pointed out regarding the $250 tier.

There have been people asking to get the book signed instead of the collector's box at the $250 tier, which would effectively negate one of the main reasons to pledge at $500. If it becomes a 'mix and match' situation or if exclusive items to upper levels become availabe to buy retail after the Kickstarter ends, it would become a real mess.

Also, I'm not entirely sure how many people at a lower tier would move up to $250 for a hardcover book when a softcover book was previously available. That's a big jump from many of the tiers. I think most people have already contributed to the level they can afford and might be able to squeeze out a bit more to move up a single level, but moving several tiers up seems a bit unlikely as the jump between the levels becomes greater. 140/250/500/1000/3000/5000

I don't know, I guess we'll just see how it works out. Frankly, it could go really well or really bad.

  13. @Ieo

You bring up a good point. I actually moved up to the item creation level in order to add an anagram message for someone in either the lore or description of the item. Since that is now available at the next lower level without resorting to an anagram, I find myself waffling as well.

Whenever a change is made to any tier there will be those jumping for joy and others feeling a bit disappointed. I'll stay where I am for now, but it does add another layer to the decision making process. I'll probably wait to see what, if any, additional changes are made and decide at the last minute -- I'm sure many others will as well.
