  1. I fall in the Independent Party on this issue. If they were along the lines of BG2, I wouldn't mind - they're easily ignored.

I would, however, take exception to diaper sex in the tents. If they just let the screen fade to black and let players use their imagination it would be a lot more subtle and appealing (at least to me). But I'm very happily married, so I guess romance in games doesn't hold the same appeal to me as maybe some others.

This is just such a contentious issue, and everyone wants representation for their orientation in the game which, I would imagine, makes it a nightmare for the developers. Which groups are represented and how?

I don't know, I'll just leave it up to the good folks at Obsidian.

  2. @dlux

I'm curious how you will be able to identify the backers for your Poll. I think only the $100+ tiers will be identified with a forum badge of some sort (which would leave around 41,000 actual backers of from $20 - $80 badgeless?). Or are the devs giving badges to all backers? I think I must be missing something.

All backers will get a forum badge (I believe it will be similar to what the mods and devs have). Check the rewards on the kickstarter page. :)

I just did and don't see it -- my eyes must be getting old.

Thanks, I just saw it on the $5 tier. Didn't look high enough. Thanks!!

  3. I want a castle, like Divinity 2. Someplace spacious where I can store my loot, do crafting etc. Somehow an ordinary house or inn just doesn't cut it. If you're going to go that route go big, or forget it. And did someone just say Sims ? My mind must be going I couldn't have heard that. What would be next, an Angry Birds type mini-game ?

They really haven't given out any details yet that I'm aware of, but I'm going out on a limb and say the 747 cabin isn't on the list.

A stronghold is what I would like most with quests required to obtain it -- ala BG2.

  4. Wasn't the whole point of this project to make a strong single player game, and avoid tacking on sh*t publishers would demand...like co-op? This really blows me away. I mean there are dozens upon dozens of games with co-op already.

I would say the majority of games now are released with some form of MP. I can only think of a couple of upcoming games without it and that's Dishonored and Hitman Absolution.

I'll leave it to Obsidian, but I would prefer a more expansive SP experience. I would never use MP if it was added, but that's just my personal preference.

  5. I just checked out that site. That's pretty interesting -- I hope they reach their goal. I'll wait and see how it goes before I contribute.

But, yeah, it's a bit confusing especially when it comes to groups as it's all tied to one account -- just like your example. You're going to get the additional keys, etc., but it's still tied exclusively to your account.

It will be interesting to see how all this gets sorted out.

  6. Actually, after giving this more thought, I would think people who individually contributed $500+ would expect that anyone's name appearing in the 'gold' credits did the same. If 10 people contribute $100 then their names should appear in the regular credits individually (if it's even allowed) or as a unit (group name) in the 'gold' credits. To do otherwise would diminish the value to the other individual contributors. That certainly is one of the perks, marketing wise, to attract people to contribute at a high level. It even gets stickier as the number of people forming a group increases. Say 20 people contribute $50 each to reach $1K. According the the published perks, they would not even reach the prescribed amount individually to be in the regular credits. The group name, of course, would still be eligible for the 'gold' credits.

It becomes even more diluted regarding beta testing, which the published perks state begins at $140. In either of the above examples, only the person whose name is on the actual order would/should be eligible for the beta testing or this could be widely abused.

The purchase is tied to a single account so only one of your group would receive the "Gold VIP Badge" I would imagine. I guess the rest would receive (and this is a big maybe) the regular 'VIP Badge' (using the $100 each example). In the second example, however, there would only be the "Gold VIP Badge" for the person whose name is on the order and no badge for the remaining group members.

This could become quite convoluted and some pledges could fall to the side if an individual contributor suddenly becomes one of 3,000 instead of one in 300 or so. It is no longer a somewhat exclusive level -- just one that can be easily exploited. I'm certainly not saying that getting a group together to be a part of the creative process is in any way an exploitation. Simply that caution needs to be taken and the developers need to state on the Kickstarter page how they will be handling the group contributions.

I know your post was only asking about the credits, but it got me thinking about other possible scenarios.

  7. I think PsycoBlonde may have the best idea with a group name. There are possible other ramifications or abuses for people contributing at that level otherwise. What if others decided to add their friends and families names so they can appear on the credits even though they weren't involved in the purchase and may not even play the game? The purchase is tied to a single account so only one of your group will receive the "Gold VIP Badge" I would imagine. They also want to add the purchaser's name to a plaque in their office. It could conceivably turn into a full wall mural if the system is exploited.

I don't know - just throwing some thoughts out there. As it stands now, there are about 300 people contributing at the $500+ level and that could increase by a bit (and hopefully will) by the end of the Kickstarter. Not to mention the 3,000+ now in the $100 - $250 range who will also be in the credits and these numbers will likely increase more substantially.

Using a group name may be an option. You could always put the group name in your sig to identify yourself as belonging to the group that created the weapon/armor/artifact. I'd imagine there would also be some recognition in the credits that your group helped in the creation of 'xyz'.

  8. Agreed. Recreate Edwin from the BG games. He always was so underappreciated. Apparently most people couldn't take their minds off of gimmick characters like Minsc and Boo long enough to see Edwin's personality for the brilliance that it was.

I loved them both and the banter, if you had both in your party, was priceless (because of poor, dearly departed Dynaheir from BG1).

  9. A companion with a 'Boo' type mascot they have conversations with - leave it up to Obsidian as to the design of the companion - it could be a much darker character/mascot. I can't lie, Minsc was always my favorite in BG. Loved Edwin too, especially when he turned female for awhile. I still smile when I remember the party's reaction to his feminine status -- especially Minsc - it was priceless.

Mostly, I just want them to develop deep, rich characters -- not duplicates from any previous game.

  10. BG can be very challenging the first time you play. One of the keys to to roll good enough stats to start with a decent build. There is a walkthrough available I think on GameFaqs by Dan Simpson which would be extremely helpful for you to understand the rules and great advise on starting builds and playthrough strategy. You don't need to use the walkthru if you don't want, but he has invaluable advise on character builds, etc.

You really will enjoy it once you get a better understanding. With great risk comes great reward is all I can say. I have very fond memories of BG and BG2.

Oh, and to answer your question, I hope it's at least as soul crushing as BG and BG2 were - wouldn't have it any other way.

  11. Perhaps you are right SqueakyCat, i do recall enjoying Icewind dale 2 years ago and I have (vague'ish) memories of being immersed playing Planescape Torment for a while with its very rich setting, and thinking more about it, those sort of isometric style games did seem to me to just ...die (unless you count neverwinter nights and diablo 3) so even if it seems like a 'throwback' to that era of gaming to someone like me who much preffered the absorbing 1st person view it wont matter because obsidian will deliver a excellent game anyway.

Depending on the game, the modding community has been very active and there are lots of mods for widescreen, etc. Just do a search and you should be able to locate mods for any of those games you're interested in. Also, there's a new enhanced version of BG1 coming out soon which will have better graphics and support modern resolutions, so that may also be an alternative for you.
