  1. Quoting the Kickstarter page, "We are excited at this chance to create something new, yet reminiscent of those great games and we want you to be a part of it as well."  From what I've seen and read so far, PoE is certainly reminiscent of BG/Icewind Dale.  Obviously, we don't know about the story/writing at this point, but I don't think there are any worries on that front.  As they said, they are also creating something new that's 'inspired' by the classics.

People expressing opinions of what they liked in those games, or disliked, is to be expected.    If they have added things some backers consider too mainstream or changed things they consider essential to the I.E. games, discussion is bound to take place.  We all knew from the beginning they were creating their own system, so it was never going to be BGIII.  It's only natural, though, that people will lobby for features in those earlier games that appealed to them, or didn't.  I believe Obsidian has been pretty good about listening to the backers and making minor adjustments on a few aspects like resting (thank you Josh).

We all want for this IP to be successful for Obsidian to help them maintain their independence (so they can make more games we like).  :)   Personally, I believe PoE will be a very good, even great game.

Can't wait to hear about the next Kickstarter.

  2. So is this a real scam now or are people actually overblowing this? I've read some stuff here and there, but I am not really sure what to think about it right now.

That's a matter of opinion, but even some of the Kickstarter backers are beginning to have doubts apparently (see first link).  She hasn't made a KS Update since beginning of last October.  The game was supposed to be completed in September, I believe.

She released a 15 minute demo last October and then hasn't updated the backers since (at least not according to the Kickstarter Page).  The demo was supposed to be Chapter 1 and was ironically titled 'Broken Promises'.

I did link above (3rd link) to an e-mail she sent to backers a few days ago supposedly saying she'd lost all their e-mail addresses and couldn't send out some fulfillment items unless people resent their e-mail addresses, sizes, etc.  She's also selling the demo for $7.99 on her website encouraging people to make their own game (???).

Hey, it's not like it involved millions of dollars -- it was just such a trainwreck from the beginning, I thought I'd give an update once I stumbled across the thread earlier today.

  3. That's a difficult one, Bruce.  In my experience, people generally overeat or regularly drink too much because they are unhappy -- either with something currently happening in their life or something that happened in the past which they haven't been able to resolve.  I've only known a couple of morbidly obese people, but they were extremely cheerful on the outside and very easy to like, but very troubled internally.  One was a co-worker of my husband's who eventually died in his 30's due to complications with his weight and diabetes.  It was such a waste -- he was a wonderfully caring person.

Amentep gave some very good advice.

Have you thought of making a really healthy, great tasting lunch and inviting her to join you?  The subject of food would naturally come up since you made the lunch for her.  I have some good recipes if you need a few.

You have to tread very, very carefully when discussing a woman's weight no matter how good your intentions may be.

All kidding aside, though, it's particularly a problem with young girls.  A jealous cousin of my daughter made an off-cuff remark to her (and she was in no way overweight) when she was 15 and it started a 3 year cycle of anorexia/bulimia.  Her low point was 90 pounds.   She's fine now, but extremely thin and fragile.

Tread very softly, Bruce, and good luck.  I think it's very nice of you to want to help her get healthy. :)

  4. Indira,  I think the Devs gave everyone until the end of the month so the 19th is fine.   Just a reminder -- they cannot be more than 200 characters in length and they need a title as well which can be around 40 characters I believe.  Have fun!

I wish I had done this months ago because I think at least a few more people would have considered donating to the community as well.

I see what you did there, Panda.  You found a way to completely avoid the curse.  Smooth, very smooth.

  5. I've already written you a PM, saying the same thing, but I'll reiterate a bit of it here:

Thank you ever so much! I just wanted to write something that was in keeping with the PE setting, and since I adore Orlans, it's no surprise that I focussed my little poem on one of them. I researched what little there was, and I found the fate of wild Orlans engaging. They excelled in the use of poisons and traps, and there you have it! :)

It's always nice to be able to expand Pillars of Eternity, however minutely!

You don't get off that easily.  Now comes the curse part.

You have to select someone else's idea for my other Memorial Stone.  Looks like Pandamaniac also wants you to select one for his submission as well (if I'm reading that correctly).  Although, you could just select the one you like Pandamaniac.  I don't think anyone is going to turn you down.  :)

Now you have two more to select (?), I think, but I may be a bit confused after last evening's outing.

  6. I'd like to wrap this up tomorrow afternoon.  Since no one has offered suggestions on how to select ideas, I guess that leaves it up to me.  The only thing I've come up with is that I choose one idea I liked in particular and that person selects someone else -- sort of a gift/curse type of thing.     If anyone has a better idea, please offer a suggestion.

Since I doubt Obsidian will be doing anything with the surveys over the weekend, it would allow the contributors time to edit/alter any last minute thoughts before I send them off Monday.

I sent a question to Customer Support to clarify who will have access to the decoder ring and how it's obtained (redemption code/quest/etc.).  I'll let everyone know if I get a response.  Thanks again for taking the time to share your creative side.

  7. That would be disappointing indeed.  So, the offer is 2 Memorial Stones and their super secret decoder ring codes (if required).  I hope one of the two contributors will start a thread to show their Memorial Stone in-game as well as any little jewels they find in their travels so the rest of us can see as well.  I'm hoping it's a quest reward.

How does everyone come up with these ideas?  I feel so lacking in this area.  ;(

  8. I guess this was to be expected.  To Bruce, Gifted, etal,  I hope you will all collaborate on a Memorial Stone about romance.  If well written, I would happily provide you with a survey for it (seriously).  Since it is text only (no images), I can rest safe in the knowledge that my eyes will not feel compelled to leap to their death at the sight of a diaper-clad adult cartoon character trying to emote passion.

Thank you, Gifted1, for answering the question I posed in a previous thread.  Clarity is always welcome.

To everyone who chose to continue to wage battle in a nonexistent war, I am more than happy to accommodate you with your 34th platform to do so as this thread was never about trying to provide some incline to the Memorial Stones tens of thousands of people will be reading once the game is released.

To those of you providing your ideas for a Memorial Stone, thank you very, very much.  If you have more than one idea, please continue posting.

I'm going back to vacation mode.    I'll check back in a couple of days.

  9. These Memorial Stones really have me stymied.  Rather than submit nothing at all or something cringe-worthy, I'd like to donate them to all members of the community (mods included) who would otherwise not have an opportunity to contribute something in-game.  There are a lot of creative minds on this forum, so I'm hoping at least a few of you will be able to come up with something worthy to be in the game.

From what I understand, there is a place for a name on the Memorial Stone that can be around 40 - 43 characters in length (?).  I'm guessing that when you either mouse-over or click on the Stone, the message appears which can be up to 200 characters in length.  Below is a visual of how much space that entails:

The amount of space available for the name:

    0123456789012345678901234567890123456789

It could be any variation of the above - they were just examples.

Feel free to add your initials or some other identifier to indicate it's your work.  It's up to you.  I'll just be copy/pasting them into the surveys on your behalf.   Please offer any suggestions you may have on how the community should pick the two winners.  I'm going to be technology-free for awhile, so I'll check back in a few days.  I would like to have them submitted no later than Saturday as Obsidian is anxious for the submissions.

Thanks everyone, and I really hope this turns into a fun thread for all.

  10. That's a good question, Bruce, and one to which I really don't have an answer.

I like different things in different games.  I love the story in PS:T.  I generally like everything in the BG series.  I have even come to like some ARPGs as heretical as that may be.  One of my favorite series wasn't even a RPG -- the original Thief series.  So, there you have it.  :)

  11. I believe what we are witnessing here is some new and extremely virulent form of Willful Ignorance.

Willful Ignorance is the state and practice of ignoring any sensory input that appears to contradict one’s inner model of reality. At heart, it is almost certainly driven by confirmation bias.  Depending on the nature and strength of an individual’s pre-existing beliefs, willful ignorance can manifest itself in different ways. The practice can entail completely disregarding established facts, evidence and/or reasonable opinions if they fail to meet one’s expectations.  In other slightly more extreme cases, willful ignorance can involve outright refusal to read, hear or study, in any way, anything that does not conform to the person’s worldview.

The morally right way to treat such individuals is not to look down upon, ridicule or attack them, but to help them to be able to accept reality again.

Come back, Bruce, come back!  We miss you here on terra firma.

On a side note, have you seen the film Her?  Hormalakh posed the question earlier.

  12. Since Romance has been a constant companion in this forum for the last 17 months, I thought a proper send-off was in order.

In Memoriam of our fallen companion, Romance:

On 14 September 2012, the opening shot is fired and stylishly locked by Big Green.  It was a tiny glimpse into what lay ahead.  As the Kickstarter begins, sides are taken and skirmishes ensue between the factions.  Without leadership, the trolls gain the upper hand.

The first Poll thread appears and the leaders begin to emerge.  The Anti-faction is championed by Monte Carlo and TwinkieGorilla, the Pro-faction by BruceVC and The Merin.  Numerous threads begin to emerge, as well as more poll threads.  Suddenly, a hush comes over the battlefield when Metiman has visions of birdcages.  Only twelve days into the Kickstarter, a moratorium on Romance is put into effect.  Two weeks later, a new thread arises and Big Green decrees:  Only One Romance Thread May Exist In The Realm.

Untethered by the restriction, the factions continue to spar in the first of The "Unofficial" P.E. Relationship/Romance threads and then the second.  A wiley soldier tried to circumvent Big Green's decree by taking the 'sexuality and mature content' path, but was quickly taken into custody by the local law, TaleNewbies entered the fray, but were escorted out with helpful advice about donning flame retardant suits.

With the advent of the Unofficial P.E. Relationship/Romance Thread pt. 3, a Champion falls in battle.  The Merin was ensnared in a trap of his own words by the Anti-faction sleuth, Bos_hybrid. The Merin was never again seen in the kingdom, but left a heartfelt message to its inhabitants in his wake. There have been reported sightings of The Merin in his faraway homeland but nothing confirmed.

For seven months, the Relationship/Romance Thread IV brought about a time of uneasy peace between the factions.  Many returned to their homes knowing they could be recruited at a moments notice.

The 28th Romance thread arose on 4 September 2013 and was quickly redirected to the current thread at that time with Gorth's unequaled flare.

On 11 February 2014, the Town Crier, C2B, brought news from King Sawyer and a call-to-arms was heard throughout the kingdom.  The Pro-faction, with one of its champions in self-imposed exile, looked to BruceVC for leadership.  NanoPaladin looked to science for the answers.

King Sawyer, in an attempt to quell the uprising, issues a formal Proclamation dashing forever the dream of finding love in PoE.

  13. Lephys, it should be abundantly clear what these particular Romance threads are discussing -- the PC.  What you are discussing is outside that parameter.

If you want to discuss possible romantic themes in side-quests, you should start a thread.  If you want to discuss other companion interactions you'd like to see in the game, start a thread.  Posting about those things here will neither get the attention nor a response from the Devs. as they have already made their decision regarding the topic under discussion.

In, literally, dozens of these threads spanning more than 17 months, the Devs. have made an appearance precisely 2 times -- once when Josh announced their decision to not include romances, and the second occasion was in the same thread when a Dev. confirmed the cost involved.  That's it.  In over 17 months, that's it.  They aren't looking for inspiration in this thread (thankfully) because they are not writing romances.

A stark contrast is the amount of discussion the Devs. have had regarding game mechanics.  Could it be they don't want to discuss their story?

  14. This topic hasn't just been discussed for the past 6 - 8 months -- it's been over 17 months (the first one appearing on 14 September 2012).  The discussion has been ongoing since,  generally contained to a single thread.

The Devs would have had to lose all cognitive function to have not been aware of this polarizing ongoing discussion.

They have made their decision, and yet some people still think if they continue to push for their inclusion, the Devs will suddenly realize (after 17 months in a coma apparently) they need to be included.  Seriously, reread what Josh said and really let it sink in as I don't see any wiggle-room there:

Even if 100% of fans wanted them, I don't believe we have the time and other resources to implement them well.  I am not inherently opposed to romances, but I don't want to spend time implementing something I'm not confident we will be able to execute at a high level of quality.

Discussion of possible romantic themes in side-quests should be discussed in a different thread as these discussions have clearly (and always) been about the player character.

  15. The sad part is the devs do not even take the time to explain design decisions like that which clearly intetest a lot of people.

this is not limited to romance... crafting was explained a bit better but still more than lackluster same as stats.

Instead they give me updates about which development steps are needed to design a room... which while technical interesting for some sure is not what is really interesting to most players...

This time would be better used for community interactions at the forums... beyond closing threads for reaching postcont.

Sure a lot of filth is written here but many topics also have great points or ideas... or valid concerns in it.

A kickstarted game gives the best chance to interact closely with the own playerbase use it...

They did explain their decision.  You just didn't like the answer.

Regarding the updates, there's about 75,000 backers to this project and only a small percentage that make use of these forums.  They use the updates to e-mail and keep their large backer base informed as well as connecting with people on this forum.

"Sure a lot of filth is written here" . . . and this is why I, for one, am happy with their decision.  Had the decision gone the other way, these forums would look the way they did the first few weeks of the Kickstarter with threads like "I want to shag romance the furry detective dude".

This is a nice place.  I'd like to see it stay that way.
