Except the very reason for commenting on them is "the danger of censorship they present" or somesuch, innit? -

That's kind of the point, isn't it? But realistically, the only thing Twitter and tumblr people being outraged generates is noise. Noise that pretty much dies down after a few months. Do correct me if I'm wrong. -

Admit it, you just loathe Sommers for her involvement in GG. I loathe Summers for her general wingnuttery, outright lies, malicious misuse of statistics, and working for an anti-intellectual conspiracy theorist. Compared to these, her involvement with GG isn't even a blip on the radar. Neither is it particularly surprising, mind.

Journalism and Bias in the Gaming Industry

Ah, usual... Most of the article he is quoting Maciak. And in this particular instance, he's not. He's quoting an article that engages in none of the behavior he describes. Hence the label: "misleading". It's not a difficult concept to grasp. (Before you ask, yes, I do realize how condescending this sounds.) (This is why I'm better than Chmielarz.[/sarcasm]) Edit: I feel compelled to point out that there are many ways of achieving change, and not all of them involve physically forcing developers at gunpoint to write more black characters into their games. Or, like, any sort of coercion at all, including "CENSORSHIP!". -

At least acknowledging the existence of structural racism would be a nice first step. I am not in a mood for listening & believing. Please try to answer my initial question. "First off, we should acknowledge their existence" is a perfectly valid answer for the question "how would you suggest society should do [I assume: to] tear/change these structures?". Which can generally be gleaned through engagement with the core text, not vague claims of "it's totally there, honest". Nope. ...Have you never attended a single literature class in your entire life? This is, like, high school level we're talking about. You can't just make **** up, it has to have at least a semblance of connection to the text you're trying to analyze. -

Then I'm sorry to say, but you can't ****ing read. The article made no direct claims of racism on part of the game or the developers, nor any requests for content to be changed at all. Hence, "[the] perpetually offended do not just demand changes. They also shame developers for not catering to their own personal needs" is misleading if I'm feeling charitable, and outright false if I'm not. -

...To have people of color. Hell, Geralt runs into a pair of them in The Sword of Destiny who are clearly mercenaries, and therefore should feel right at home in the war-torn North. Hence the grumbling. But I think people (on both sides) are blowing this far out of proportion. Then again, I thought the same thing about the transphobic backer content. -
I was alluding to the contents of the first video, not the study.

I don't know why you feel a need to defend a claim that's outright misleading at best. If you make claims of vaguely-defined "people" doing something, and inject a link to an article, it's at least suggestive of "this here article is an example of what I'm talking about". -
There's nothing wrong with women choosing to focus on their family at the expense of their career. But - contrary to what Mrs. Sommers likes to pretend - there's also nothing wrong with acknowledging that for many, societal pressures play a role in this choice. To claim that people are rational, free beings whose decision-making is independent of outside factors is blatant falsehood that flies in the face of everything we know about the workings of the human brain. Another point worth considering: an average of 4.8-7.1% difference is not very meaningful data. Research shows there absolutely are professions where the wage gap is effectively nonexistent, or slightly slanted towards women. In other areas... not so much.

You don't think it's a bit counter-productive to make a claim regarding what a certain group of people is doing, and instead of linking to people who actually do the thing you're accusing them of doing, pointing to an example where you can't see any of the listed behaviors? -

I'm against artless condescension What grinds my gears isn't Chmielarz's condescending attitude, it's him being completely unaware of how condescending he sounds. Well that's fine and dandy, but it's still not justification to claiming that "[the] perpetually offended do not just demand changes. They also shame developers for not catering to their own personal needs, and they act as if they are the voice of all" while linking to an article that neither demands changes, nor shames the developers, nor acts as if the writer is the voice of all. -

I think there's a rather sizeable conceptual gulf between "I'm going to talk about this problem in context of The Witcher 3 [proceeds to make no claims of TW3 being racist/made by racists and no requests that anything be changed]" (ie. what the Polygon article did) and "you lie and you shame and defame a perfectly fine game just because it’s not something you want" (ie. what this joker claims the Polygon article did). There's definitely some projecting going on here, methinks. It's not my place to guess what people of color who'd prefer better representation would find a good solution. That said, I think it's acceptable for CDPR to make no changes. This is not about The Witcher 3. Minority representation being lacking is an industry-wide thing. Individual examples can be fine. The article was less about the lack of representation, and more about the vicious backlash to complaints regarding it. I'm butthurt about TN's reaction to it. The article is par for the course, him disregarding the condescension and false claims isn't. -
I love how the topic is tagged "statistics" and "facts", yet includes no actual statistics in support of the claims it makes. That said, the second video is quite good. Almost good enough to offset how terrible the first one is. Almost.

Journalism and Bias in the Gaming Industry
aluminiumtrioxid replied to Blarghagh's topic in Way Off-Topic
This was the most interesting read on the subject so far. Thanks for that! It was butthurt whining from a guy incapable of differentiating "I'd like to be represented in gaming and boy, is the community reaction vicious to a simple request like this or what?" from "The Witcher 3 is a horrible racist screed against minorities that should be eradicated from the face of the Earth". Complete with a big helping of "I will tell you how you're allowed to express your complaints because I know better what serves your cause"-type of condescension at the end, because really, it would be kind of unrealistic to expect a guy who can't even read to be not completely tone-deaf. -

Or, instead of sober self-awareness and level-headed self-correction, you could just: Join a political ideology that tells you what (and how bad) your biases are simply based on your gender and race. Listen & Believe. Frantically over-correct your behaviours sans common sense, in order to gain status with the other believers and feel good about how you're "one of the good ones". End up with new biases and intolerant behaviors, that are several orders of magnitude more severe than any you might have had to begin with. And who gets to define where's the line between "sober self-awareness and level-headed self-correction" and "frantic over-correction"? You? How convenient. I swear, you people are ****ing allergic to nuance. Yes, it does make it impossible for structural racism to exist against white men on a society-wide scale (in the West, at least). It never implies that individual instances of racism against whites can't exist. Or maybe, just maybe, you're a ****ing conspiracy nut who's so obsessed with seeing cultural marxism in every corner, he reads it into ****ing everything. One could draw comparisons with "oversensitive SJWs looking to get offended". Well, it's kind of one of the article's point that black people very obviously exist within the setting, yet they are still omitted. "War zones ravaged by nazi elves are not exactly a popular travel destination for people who otherwise live half a world away" is a perfectly acceptable counterargument to this, mind. Probably because the inclusion of fantastical elements, by definition, precludes historical accuracy. I believe the word you're looking for is "historicizing". -

So, at level 6 I could pick another. Do I get any other chances to pick more later? That's... not really how it works. Feats are rather chunky in 5E, offering multiple benefits at once. Hence, for the investment of a single feat, you get this: - Whenever your shapeshifting would end, you can choose to remain in wereshark form. You still lose all related combat bonuses, but retain the advantage on Strength checks (not saves!) and your capability to breathe underwater. and now this: - Ferocious Bite: while in wereshark form, you can make bite attacks as a bonus action for 1d8+Strength bonus damage, but the taste of blood drives you into a frenzy that makes telling friend from foe all but impossible. You always have to attack the nearest eligible target until you change back to human form or the encounter ends. In addition to those above, you can also choose one of these: - Gain advantage on swimming checks; swimming no longer halves your speed, OR - Gain advantage on any rolls to track, or detect the presence of, any bleeding targets or targets whose blood you ever tasted. A successful Perception check also reveals basic information about targets whose blood you can smell or taste, like race and general health, OR - Your Spirit Seeker class feature can now be used on all predatory aquatic animals. As for Aspect of the Beast, when you hit level 6, you get a noncombat benefit related to your connection to sharks. I'd let you have any of the latter three as your Aspect, although I think the first two (swimming and blood-smelling upgrade) are thematically more appropriate than the last. Re: picking more up later, I'd say it's possible, but not necessarily beneficial. We can hammer out another feat (at level 8 ), but you'll probably be better off with an ability score improvement at that level (unless you come up with an amazing feat idea). Alternatively, you can switch out your level 10 Spirit Walker class feature for a noncombat benefit of your choice, which... might not actually be that bad. Of course, you'd need to reach level 10 first. -
I have to say this is a good example of the principles of Capitalism going too far No, as JadedWolf has accurately pointed it out, this is capitalism doing what capitalism does. Which is, incidentally, why libertarian "let the free market run its course, it will work out in the end, honest" views fill me with utter dread. That's the thing Capitalism doesn't have to be like that, the doctrine of Capitalism doesn't say " profit at all costs " But it does tend to foster a culture where personal worth is closely tied to material worth, which leads to the rise of "temporary profit at all costs" thinking at the top.
