The studio who would accept such an offer would be horribly retarded because this is the kind of backhand deal that can ruin a reputation. Of course, big studios won't care since they've more fans who don(t especially care but why would they start a kickstarter. No it's independant studios like Obsidian who resort to crowdfunding, studios aiming for the nerd crowd who like to read any article concerning the new game they're waiting and rage when anything is afoot *hum* RPGcodex *hum*. These studios better self-destroy already if they were planning to accept. Or run away with the cash to the Carribeans, which may be a smarter objective.

This is a terrible, terrible idea. The article shown in the original message is saying gays have been handled correctly in FNV because it was an offhand comment for characters that could be counted on one hand. Well, it should stay that way. Nobody cares about fictional characters' sexuality except sweaty nerds. I don't want to see gays or lesbians in game, nor do I want to see people showing off their heterosexuality. I don't think them being represented is something worth of any value. I want to see their personality, what they are beyond their sexual preferences. If a character happened to reveal he's gay during a conversation, well, that's it. No more comment on the matter. The only reason I'm writing that is because this thread is one of the most popular and people seem to really think ti's important. Well, it's not. And if LGBT representantives are aiming for some kind of recognition by the video games industry, well, games like Dragon Age 2 gave it already. We're beyond that now.

Human supremacy in Eternity world
Auxilius replied to Qumi's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Why about a game where humans are a dying specie. And by dying, I mean, like the Aztecs in the XVIIth century. -
Sex and Romance Poll
Auxilius replied to Troller's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Welp, I did a great post but I hit Paste instead of Copy and all was deleted. Basically, I was saying than a lot of you are underestimating the proromance crowd, than Obsidian is looking for money and therefore can't ignore it and stay silent. They're running a business here, and more money means a better game for all of us. It could provide the opportunity to upgrade the waits of this crowd so romances won't be made of three lines and a sweaty scene. It could add some maturity in the industry by proving how love stories in video games can be done right. So the best they could do is treading on a fine line. Talk about it, without fearing the subject, like adults but by reassuring the nerd crowd it won't be the focus of the game and will be included organically in the story. It also shouldn't be the core of an update. I know this crowd and I also know they can freely interpret any information as they want. Offhand comments will be enough. -
Sex and Romance Poll

24 pages . Most successful conversation, before pinned threads. Well... it will anger the always angry nerd anyway but Obsidian better do an update on the matter to cash some money in. -
Sex and Romance Poll
Auxilius replied to Troller's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I'm all for romances if they are included organically in the story. After all, love is bound to grow if you travel together with someone for a long time, saving each other lifes on a daily basis. It's a good way to keep you interested in a character, especially if they reference what they lived with the PC. But if this is a sidequest where you have to go out of your way to make someone love you, then no, it's not worth it. It's amusing but a game who succeeded at that was Skies of Arcadia. The girls became closer to Vyse naturally. It was subtle but there. You could completely ignore it if you wanted and most people felt it was the continuity of all the adventures they went through. Also, there was no sweaty nor blatant sex. Sex can't be done correctly in fictions. See The Witcher 1. God that sucked. -
But that's not what happened in KOTOR2. The game keeps going on once you beat Nihilus who were a complete pushover anyway. It was all about the Exile's journey. I agree we shouldn't ignore the characters who are the backbone of the story but epic stories and campaigns are cool too. See MotB, you battle angels, doomguides and gods to save your soul, it felt great to live such a story with great characters at your side. Bioware tried that in Mass Effect 2 but I think they failed because there were a complete lack of interactions between the characters who weren't that interesting to begin with. It's hard to explain such complex concepts in a language that is not my mother tongue but basically, what ME2 lacked was a life in the ship. Something that was here in NWN2, same for the Ebon Hawk in KOTOR2. The ship was fun to explore because something was always bound to happen. To resume, great characters won't fit if the story is lacking.

Portrait Poll

I thought I didn't care, but then I remember how MotB portraits looked great compared to the usual avatar faces. -
Pacifist Run
Auxilius replied to Auxilius's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
There are great ideas in this thread. Beyond stealth, I'd like a play style where you're on the battlefield but nobody dares to fight the PC just because of his reputation as someone who can ruin your life thanks to his relationships or even cultists. As long as there is a possibility to show off diplomatic skills like you could do in Arcanum by uniting Tarante and Caladon, I'm all in. -
Well, I don't have much to say, all is said in the title. It's a must-have. I'm surprised nobody seems to have talked about it yet.

Stretch Goals
Auxilius replied to NateOwns's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I wouldn't say it slowed down. Every kickstarter's first day is always the best day and according to kicktraq, the pledges are still quite huge. it's not like it suddenly dropped, despite what angry nerds could tell you. As I can see it, when you compare it to Wasteland 2's kickstarter, there is a big difference. Of course, Obsidian got a way bigger fanbase but still. I think it's not impossible for Obs to beat Double Fine. They got a lot of fans willing to throw their money up their pledges for more content as long as it's them behind the game, running wild with ideas and concepts. They crafted quite a number of AAA titles distributed worldwide after all. But I agree when people say Obs need to be clearer on the matter and shove content almost every day. It has the potential to reach really great numbers. What they only need is a good PR guy who knows his stuff. I hope they read this. -
Obsidian has a Kickstarter profile
Auxilius replied to C2B's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
The map looks a lot like something out of D&D. I hope it'll be as fun to explore. From now on, I'll consider this game as Arcanum 2: No steampunk yet. -
(4) What do the words mean?
Auxilius replied to The Guildmaster's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
It saddens me to realize I've not enough imagination to deduce what the teaser is about despite the many many clues. Now, I would say something tied to Greek Mythology, but boy, is that a wild guess. -

Dungeon Siege 4 comes to mind but it seems too easy. "Dirge of Eir Glanfath" sounds like something out of the DS verse though. Neverwinter Nights 4? Unless the MMO is considered as the 3rd game, it"s not that. Same for KOTOR 4. (I'd love a new NWN though) Fallout 4? Nope, Bethesda is working on it. An add-on to Fallout 4, ala FNV? Too soon. People talk about the Wheel of Time but the "project" is way too old to be teased like that. Arcanum 2, now with four lands to explore? Drat, it sounds like a wet dream. Dream aborted. A new IP? Maybe. It would explain a little more the number. It could be an arc number, the number of heroes or something like that. Related to kickstarter? I wish not. I'd love an Obsidian kickstarter but any new AAA contract is good news for the company. Also, holy carp: 265 user(s) are reading this topic. Even i can't believe there are so many people at the same time on this forum. -
It's pretty much going to happen, yup. F:NV was so successful because F3 crippled fans' expectations. Among other reasons of course. IMO, Chris is a little obsessed with P:T, for objective and subjective reasons. People keep telling him how that game was great and want a (spiritual) sequel but they don't realize they are infuating him with the Planescape way of doing things. I want Chris to keep a fresh mind on how to write a good RPG, not to do a copy/paste of what has been done 15 years ago. P:T isn't perfect and while the choices, consequences and meaningful dialogues made it great, there is still a lot of room for new possibilities and fresh ideas.

I must say I'm disappointed to see there is no summer achievements and rewards like last summer. I guess I won't open my wallet as much as Gabe would have wanted. So far, I only bought Wrath of the Lamb for 75 cents. I don't think I ever bought a video game for so little money. I love indie games.
-
Well, kickstarter makes people realize that but keep in mind we're talking about 50 000 at best. Hardly a market for publishers. See Spiderweb Software. I don't think any of their games sold 100 000 units. And that's terrible. Jokes aside, party-based RPGs won't die now than old-school designers found a niche market for this kind of games (And Steam can help). But don't expect Bethesda, Bioware or even Obsidian for that matter to do that. Only the indie scene can do something and even then, I doubt to see a lot of them again. Harebrained Schemes needed 400 000$ for Shadowrun Returns. Mitsoda (Doublebear Productions) wanted 150 000$, when the game was already in development since two years. Let us not talk of Fargo and the one million dollar he asked for the development. As it is, a party-based good RPG is either too expensive to do for indie developers or not lucrative enough for publishers. There is no middle ground on the video game scene so I'm not expecting a lot on that matter. I still think this is a good idea for investors.

Sadly, that's not what gamers want nowadays. But at least he's aware of that Go Tim! Make your own kickstarter already!

Obsidian currently working on next-gen console title

"Both positive and negative"please. By the way, the day when Obsidian announces a mobile phone game is the day I weep for WRPGs as a whole. Don't fail me, Spiderweb Software. -

Well, I said that because I already read tons of messages here and you're always appear as an endless tower of barely contained anger against the others' tastes. I don't think I ever saw something pleasing you and I'm quite sure I'm not the first one making a comment on the subject. Besides, criticize is not the word you should use, considering you always seem to "describe" the bad part, if there ever was a good part actually. Criticize means backing your points with arguments, not waltzing away after several bad words. At least, that's the definition as told by the dictionary: "To judge the merits and faults of; analyze and evaluate". So, if I may correct your mistake, the word you're actually looking for is *thrash* like in the line "I can still thrash stuff without hating it". As it is, you state subjective opinions as if they were objective facts. That's... bad, for lack of a better word. Consider a little more how the others feel when someone is thrashing a game they liked, even if this concept might not be familiar to places where you're coming from... -
