Yea, BSG figures out ways to answer question that leave giant plot holes or just in ridiculously silly ways. Both shows are slowly being crushed by their back story at this point.

To argue that their just a technique to give context to the period is to say the characters in Deadwood are the same. Sure, they give context, but that's not nearly the only point of their existence.
