No better way to be. The forum would get boring. The forum would be empty.

If it's done well, sure, definitely. However, for me, VO is more of an extra than something that is either expected or required. I always turn the subtltles on anyway. Generally, I would prefer if VO work was minimized in place of additional non-voiced text rather than limiting the text since everything has to be voiced. true. Also, conversely, good actors reading horribly written dialogue can't do much to save it either.

You are in tune with the computer gods, undoubtedly. Can you put in a good word for those less forunate?

Every PC game is different, and the amount of different PC configurations out there are countless. You might have luck with a lot of games, but eventually you will need to troubleshoot if you really want to keep playing PC games. It's just odd that you would rather give up and blame the game rather than trying to fix the problem. There are thousands of people that managed to play Fallout 3 without it crashing every 30 minutes. I'm not saying the game doesn't have technical issues, it has plenty, but crashing that often is something on your end, not just the game. Fallout 3 crashes a LOT though. Just as much if not more so than other games that have a reputation for being very buggy, such as STALKER or Bloodlines. I used to think it was just my system, but I've since found out that a lot of people have a problem with it. And the crashes are pretty random. I've had the game crash 3 times within just moments of each other, then go hours without crashing. Every 30 minutes without fail does sound like it might be something strictly beyond F3's problems though.

When you add them all up though its going to be a pretty hefty expense on VO talent. Does it make the game better? I would say no, not inherently, but it probably adds to the Wow factor of the game and generates more PR.

What planet are you from? Isn't that one of MS's big "adavnces" in post Win 98 operating systems? That the OS never lets the application touch the system/hardware? So the OS can always remain in control? To be fair, it is much better now than under DOS-based systems. Most times the OS shuts down violating application without hanging the system. I think it is amusing that Fallout 3 is one of the few games that manages to get around this somehow. There isn't even a message in the event viewer about what just happened. I should point out that FO3 doesn't always hard lock. Most of the time it just crashes back tp the OS or gets shut down by the OS. It is quite the crash prone game.

A question on digital distribution.

GoG still doesn't have a very good selection. every time I go there and look, I am always disappointed. Their list of rpgs is really short and there's still no XCOM or Moo or Thief or Terra Nova or Daggerfall or Warlords: 1-3 or Wizardry or Hexen/Heretic or Deus Ex or, well I could go on and on. Its nice to see they added Realms of Arkania recently. Those were great crpgs. And HoMM and M&M are always fun, but eh not worth the effort of signing up. But if they can really expand their catalog, I would definitely be in. -
Compared to Daggerfall FO3 is a tiny little unresponsive blip of a game. Daggerfall is an all-time favorite for me, but I'm not sure I can really agree with that. It was an amazing game for its time, but I don't think it can stand up to the big games of today. Graphically and in some areas of presentation sure, but otherwise I think it remains one of the most astonishing crpgs ever.

Fallout 3 is the only game that has crashed and hard locked my system in quite a long time. I didn't even think that was possible on post win98 operating systems

The point was Lance Henriksen. And I swear I didn't buy the lunchbox. Really. Someone gave it to me.

Wait. Who called which a what? 10 posts in and I'm already confused. -
Maybe we are thinking of "generic setting" differently, but to me it seems there's nothing generic about the setting(s) of the first 2 movies. The seetings are somewhat limited (we don't know much about the world beyond the movie, although we are given some clues in both of the films), but the settings as used in the films is hardly generic. Geiger's work alone in the first film is about 180 degree opposite of generic.

Agreed, the voice acting is horrid, and the radiant conversation (or whatever it was called) was lame. That is less bad writing and more bad design. The problem is they tried to create a dynamic world where NPC's had unscripted conversations with each other. It was an ambitious goal, but it was a failure and they should have cut it out. Actually, iirc, they cut a lot of the radiant AI at the last moment because they couldn't make it work right. What was left in the game was AI bits that more or less did work. Basically an extremely limited version of what was originally intended.

I thought FO3's CC was a tedious hellish nightmare of horrible voice acting, bad dialogue, and general idiocy. It ranks right up there as one of my most unpleasant gaming experiences. The game itself wasn't nearly so awful; I don't know why they insisted on dragging me through that. To me it just seems to indicate that Bethesda is far more convinced of their own epic writing skilz than they have any right to be. IMO, Oblivion's was pretty bad too, but it wasn't quite so teeth-grindingly insipid.

Well, really, our current data sample is so small compared to the vast epochs of geologic time that all we can do is guess about whether humans are creating dlimate change or not. That being said, it doesn't take a great deal of genius to realize that we have to respect the ecology of our planet for a wide variety of reasons, simply because we've got no place else to go.

I agree. Although the DLC for FO3 was quite poor in execution as well ( I thought). Quite different from the core game. Decent, my @ss! Bethesda has got a lot of work to do until they reach decent. Dialogues in FO3 feel like they've been written by a 12 year old kid. I don't really disagree. My only point of contention would be that relative to Oblivion, there has been improvement in the writing in FO3. QUite a large amount of improvement, actually, imo. Is that more a testament to the true awfulness of the writing in Oblivion? Probably. But still, improvement is improvement.
-
Fixed. Bethesda's crpgs fall below the average on a continual basis as far as writing goes. Fallout 3 was a decent recovery after Oblivion though. Otoh, there's a lot more to games than writing, so just because a game has bad writing doesn't mean it's not worth playing.
-
Have any of Beths crpgs been well-written? No. The closest they came was MW, and then immediately decided that was way too complicated and went into uber-dumb mode for Oblivion.
-
Even most of the people who love Beth's sandbox games rarely defend the writing. Either they don't care one way or the other or they agree its not so great but they just love the sandbox, exploration gaming style, so the writing doesn't matter.
-
First off I agree with you about the (lack of) quality regarding FO3. But there are literally millions who think the game is the greatest game ever made and if Obsidian is smart they would not rock the boat and make a similar sequel, that is if the wanted to make $$$$$. They could probably make more though if they ramped up the writing a bit. Even on the Beth boards dissatisfaction with the writing in FO3 is pretty common. Even those who aren't all that thrilled (or are nervous) about Obs developing NV are at least happy that the writing will probably improve.
