Christmas is the Christian version of Winter solstice celebrations . It's not on the right date, I know, but who cares. Anyway, the actual source that Christianity got Christmas day from was, I believe, Roman Mithraism, which was all the rage way back when Christianity was an up and coming religion. The 25th of December was Mithras' birthday. Of course, nowadays it's just about the money and the gifts.
