Wow, I didn't know they put out a best of... I probably won't get it, as I've got most of their CDs already. Cracker - How Can I Live Without You You can still come and bring me coffee in the morning You can still come and make me chicken-fried steak You can live your life with whomever you please to As long as someone takes good care of me You know I don't mind How can I live without you If it means I gotta get a job? Man, I just heard the new Audioslave song. Audioslave - Original Fire I thought they weren't gonna be "political." Still, that doesn't bother me near as much as the fact that I am totally unaffected by this song. I mean, I used to really care about Chris' music. I even liked the first Audioslave album. I just think they're treading water now, and maybe they'll look good by comparison to the rest of "modern rock," but that's a pretty damn shallow victory. Soundgarden - Pretty Noose Am I crazy or is the second song just much, much better?

I used to put "fluent in Spanish" on my resume, because I had several years of it in school. I was far from fluent in reality, however, and my resume-padding came back to bite me in the end. I was asked to call a Mexican company and ask questions about their recent acquisition. That was awkward. Crowded House - Distant Sun

Rumors on 8-track... we must all seem like young whippersnappers to the DLJ. Rocket From the Crypt - Young Livers I'll be damned, they actually made a music video or two! @TN: "All Hands on the Bad One" is a pretty cool S-K song.

Well, the Meat Puppets should help you shake the introspective songs probing the female ... psyche. The Wrens - North to Nothing i'd sing your praises to the devil's face but even fire couldn't dry you out you wouldn't know a good shot if you drank one throws up throws punches throws everybody out

Hey man, those are two respected female singer-songwriters. No harm in listening to them... in moderation. Neko Case in particular has a fantastic voice. She's the real deal, not the Nashville pretenders. I can take DiFranco in smaller doses, though. She had a really great song on a Woody Guthrie tribute CD a while back. Springsteen was on it too (big surprise).

Hell yes, I remember Scatman John! That was probably 7th grade or so for me, back when I spent Sunday morning listening to Rick Dees and the Weekly Top 40. "I'm the Scatman" was a pretty big novelty hit over here. I've never heard this one before, but it sounds pretty close to his other one.

@Checkpoint: Did you know John Lennon said "And Your Bird Can Sing" was the second-worst thing he ever wrote (excluding "Dig a Pony")? I always liked the song myself. @Baley: Eh, don't feel bad. Everybody listened to some bubblegum pop at some point in their lives. Hell, I owned a "Jock Jams" cassette at one point, that included C&C Music Factory and Rob Base's "It Takes Two. i'm not internationally known but i'm known to rock the microphone It did have that "Come Baby Come" song though, which is still kinda sweet, haha.

When I was quite young, I wore that one out to the point where the tape broke. By 5th grade, I was listening to the local country music station. The first tape I bought with my own money was probably Dwight Yoakum's album This Time. I bought it for the song "A Thousand Miles from Nowhere" which I heard on the radio and immediately loved. That album still stands up today, and I still think the cover is really cool. I also had several of Garth Brooks' early albums on tape. I remember Ropin' the Wind was a favorite of mine. My first CD wasn't nearly as "cool," however.... I bought it in '96, I think, when I got my first CD player. Def Lep's ill-advised foray into semi-grunge and industrial music. I still own it, as I refuse to sell back the first CD I ever bought. Plus, there's still a few good songs on there. edit: 'cause one of my pictures disappeared.

As any teenager in the mid-90s, there were times I was tempted to give in to my hormone-driven urges to "break stuff." Still, I never bought a Limp Bizkit or Korn record. I wear that admission like a badge of pride. The closest I got to nu metal was going to a P.O.D. concert once when I was 16. I did buy the first Creed CD though, and even told my friends that it was good and they should buy it too. Those guys made some serious music ... about something. As for Bush, well Sixteen Stone was the third CD I ever bought. Sold that sucker back to CD Warehouse probably four years ago. As Dylan said, "I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now." Yes. Number one reason QOTSA had a hit with "No One Knows." The drum fills on that track are so sick they're contagious, baby. Question: Would the Foo Fighters have made it on their own or did they need the jump start of being "the band with the drummer from Nirvana?" Also, have the Foos obliterated Cobain's shadow with their success thus far?

...Not that there's anything wrong with a little hair metal once in a while, right? Right? Bon Jovi - Wild is the Wind I suppose my street cred just went out the window. Then again, I've already ditched any elitist aspirations when I said I listen to Hootie and the Blowfish. Edit: That Luna song is really cool, Kor.

Sorry I missed the discussion guys, I needed some sleep. Anyway, "Corporate Rock Still Sucks," eh? My opinion on Nirvana varies weekly it seems, but I always think "About a Girl" was a damn fine Beatles song that Lennon/McCartney never wrote. Toots and the Maytals - Pressure Drop

Not a bad introduction. They were great, great band that had a minor MTV hit or two but never hit big. [biased opinion]Too bad, because they were 500 times better than Pearl Jam or Nirvana. [/biased opinion] I'd always heard they enjoyed covering the Motown tunes, but I never realized they'd be . And hell, while we're at it, here's one of the funkiest songs in the Whigs' repetoire: Blame Etc. i reply that i don't believe i'm ever gonna die i don't do you?

Ladies and genitals, after more than a year of surreptitiously posting at work or at a local library, I now have the internet at my apartment. I plan to go on a two-week YouTube binge. Starting with The Afghan Whigs - Come See About Me A fantastic Diana Ross and the Supremes cover, and Going to Town, an AW original.

Why Blizzard is so Successful
Oh man, I just laughed kinda loud at work. Seriously, that game ruled. Even if the gameplay wasn't awesome, the soundtrack of cheesy midi's of classic rock hits gives Rock N Roll Racing an A+ in my book. You guys are hitting on all the points that make Blizzard's games so successful. If you DIDN'T come from D&D, the BG/IWD games take a serious commitment to learn enough to not get yourself killed immediately. Blizzard gives people the fantasy they're jonesing for without the number crunching and the feeling of utter uselessness with a low level character. I agree with making low level spells unlimited after your mage reaches a certain level. Hell, most of the enemies you face on the high levels are going to shrug off magic missile anyway. But then what would we do with all those Identify scrolls?

That one is a classic. Did you know somebody picked "This is Shangri-La" for the soundtrack of NCAA Football 2006? The Lemonheads - Down About It

Yeah, I know some labels tend to have their sound they stick to. There's a pretty cool metal show I listen to on Thursdays on the way home from work. You can check out some of the playlists here. I think they play some of the reputable (?)metal bands out there. I know they interviewed Dragonforce a few weeks ago. The station has another metal show that seems to be more popular (i.e. get more requests), but I'm still at work when it's on so I haven't listened. The Afghan Whigs - Fountain and Fairfax

What are you playing now?
I picked up MVP Baseball '05 for $10 yesterday. Haven't played a baseball game a lot since the Front Page Sports sims on PC back in the mid-90s. And before that probably Triple Play 4 for the Genesis. So far I'm pretty out of my league (haw haw) with this next-gen baseball game. Ah well, I managed to learn the NCAA football system, I'm sure I'll get better at this too.

It's probably "All Right Now" by Free. It was the band Paul Rodgers was in before he was in Bad Company. Recently, Paul Rodgers toured with Queen as the new Freddie Mercury. Iron Maiden - The Evil That Men Do Livin' on the razor's edge, balancing on the ledge .... I've never seen someone critique an album for being too Finnish...
