Obsidian is searching for a new lead designer
Rhomal replied to funcroc's topic in Computer and Console
I'd like to see them bring the other Chris Taylor that used to work at Interplay and was last the lead on the middle earth online game before the licence changed hands. I Spoke to this Chris many times and he reminds me of Ferret a lot. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> He's ah...he's been busy making Dungeon Siege games.... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> ermm No. There are TWO Chris Taylor's in the gaming industry. The CT that makes DS is NOT the same as the one I am refering too. The one I am refering too was a member of the fallout 2 team and the lead dev on Fallout:Tactics. He also was the lead dev on middle earth online. -

From the dev comments about it I must agree. I just seems to be NWN-lite is my impression so far. This is biowares last chance at self redemption in my eyes. If they cant pull out a decent story in a full game this time around I am all done with them. I am not going to buy it unless I see overwhelming praise for the story.

The 'horror' factor was due to the fact it was made and shown around last halloween at the GoPlay event in france. This is just that video (with 6 to 12 month old footage) released to the public. Dev quotes about it on the front page of nwn2news FYI

> (Apparently) the game has been finished for months: the devs are just play testing and doing all the clean-up that doesn't seem to be a high priority for a lot of other publishers ... " And what does that have to do with the price of tea in china? Again, for a game this long in dev the thing will have to make a TON of money just to break even. Nevermind make a profit. You dont think they are still getting paid while Q/A-ing the thing or it runs up costs? > If it's a good game, and the competition isn't ferocious, then anything is possible. Of course anything is statistically possible. The point is, is it probabal? I lean towards no. We shall see if I am correct or not. > Lara. Star Wars. Star Trek. Yep, franchises don't have any marketing momentum. Not quite correct franchise analogies. The ones you mentioned have been consistantly in our face in one form or another since its introduction. Thus the interest, ability to attract new fans does not die off. This franchies has been mostly inactive for about a decade. totally different situation, hence my comment.

Will anyone even care about this title when it does get released? Seriouslly... Also, There is no way it can make a profit at this point. Unless it pulls a sims2 type of sales on the top 10 for 12+ months which I am pretty sure wont happen. I was talking to a game dev about this title several months ago, and he said at this point, at best, they can maybe break even assuming its a run away title of the year (once all the dev costs are tallied and subtracted from the gross). IMO this will be on the top 10 sales for no more then 3 weeks. And thats being kind. The problem is most of the generation that remembers this game/series has moved on beyond FPS, and the new generation of kids playing FPS does not remember this title/brand.

Very odd... AMD64 3000+ 1gig RAM 6600GT 128meg video game always played smooth for me with all eye candy on. I heard less then a gig of RAM and bloodlines did cause issues on lower end hardware setups. But since I have dual channel 512meg I never had a chance to find out. of course shutting down all background apps like mcafee and IM's is quite helpful as well performance wise.

Currently there is no soluation for CC people who want to add new animations or compleatly new animated models to nwn2. Last word we got is they are still exploring some kind of soluation for those that do. However new static placables shouldnt be a issue according to the Kommander/Brian. While the middleware granny saved them a lot of dev time it also complicates the CC aspect. Time will tell what will happen on this level.

Bioware presents StarWars Dragons: Vice City 2K6 ?
Rhomal replied to Draikin's topic in Computer and Console
No....I never said kiss their ass. Let's not take things to the extreme here. Though I am skeptical that you were initially as critical towards NWN as you seem to be now, in order to be so excited for the sequel. A sequel likely in production because of the merits of the original game. I suppose it's not impossible, but I find it difficult to think that someone would be so interested in a sequel of a game he didn't particularly care for. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I invite you to find one post by me as Harlequin, Rhomal or Strauss where I stated I thought the nwn oc was better then 'sub-par'. I have always been critical of the nwn1 OC/behind the times graphics out of the box. However OTOH I have always given it strong props for its toolset & MP capabilities. But the previous comments I made were a focus on the OC obviouslly. Of course I enjoyed nwn1... on a toolset, server, MP level. Certainly not for the eye candy or story. I have always been consistant on that stance. With that said, I am hopfully that nwn2 will correct that short coming. But with ONLY their past compaines (BIS) games to create a base line its hard for me to equate obsidian with anything else. I have heard many opinions about KotOR2 but since I dont like SW and thus never bought it I cant really put that into the equasion, pro or con, if I never played it. Also since thats their first game I think some slack should be granted. Was shattered steel biowares first great title that put them on the map? ermm... no. BG1 was, their second title. Now if nwn2 is rushed or shows obvious production issues like what I have heard of KotOR2 I will be the first in line to be critical. And you can take that to the bank. But the bottom line is I have no base line to really form a firm opinion of obsidian yet, but I do have one of bioware. You cant fairly compair a dev with one game out the door vs one with over half dozen. That one game could easily be a fluke (pro or con). Thus why I feel my comments are fair. -
Bioware presents StarWars Dragons: Vice City 2K6 ?
Rhomal replied to Draikin's topic in Computer and Console
V - fair enough alanschu - so let me get this strait. I have to kiss their arse because the game I am following is a sequal to one of theirs? I didnt know that takes away my right for being critical of their PC gaming (lack of) focus/quality. -
Bioware presents StarWars Dragons: Vice City 2K6 ?
Rhomal replied to Draikin's topic in Computer and Console
Speaking of ignorant... what about the 'speaking as a non-console guy' did you people not grasp? To translate: NOT taking into account their console games and speaking as a PC only gamer. As a PC only gamer my comments are accurate. They have not done anything good (story wise, full game) since BG2 and for a overall PC game not produced anything since classic NWN. And V, you made your point about my error JE a LONG time ago, you just getting your kicks beating me up over that still? gezz... grow up/move on. seriouslly I know you are a bioware fan boi but come on... -
Bioware presents StarWars Dragons: Vice City 2K6 ?
Rhomal replied to Draikin's topic in Computer and Console
I'll give the same reply I did on nwn2news: I honestly wouldn't shed a tear if Bioware got eaten up. They have not (in my opinion) put out a decent full PC game since BG2. They are living on past glory with little in the wings that excites me (as a non-console guy). Sorry, but Dragon Age looks to be NWN-lite and little else. -
It's already been established they are not and it wont. They are using middleware granny for the models and it is causing some concern in the custom content community. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Hold on, was granny actually 100% confirmed? Last I heard it was just a rumour. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> If you followed my front page news you'd have known it was confirmed awhile ago Do a search on nwn2news for 'granny' if you want the gory details.

Yes... Yes he does. I chat with him from time to time and he is a fountain of knowledge. A really cool guy to just talking about the gaming industry and pick his brain on that level.

NWN 2 News brings you yet again another exclusive interview. This time from Ferret Baudoin, Lead Designer at Obsidian Entertainment. We ask him about his past works and influence but also his views on where CRPG's are and where they are going. http://www.nwn2news.net/modules/smartsecti...m.php?itemid=29

Obsidian's Feargus Urquhart at RPG Codex forum
Rhomal replied to funcroc's topic in Computer and Console
The real question is are they even going to be around much longer... US market at least. I have not hear much positive buzz about their next gen and the PR is a fraction of what sony and MS is spending. I really cant see nintendo sticking around in the console market much longer. -
well i'm glad you didn't host it <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Did you have a issue with the way we handled the previous 2 community IRC meetings w/ devs? If so I'd like to hear specifics as thats the only way we can improve.
-
This was not hosted nor orginized by us. Just posted the news about it. If it was we would have handled things... differently. Plus we wouldnt have k-lined (banned) the devs from their own chat... heh...

This is typical ignorance on this topic. Obsidian has NOTHING to do with ports. Thats 100% in Atari's hands. Emailing MS or Obsid on the topic is futile. http://www.nwn2news.net/modules/news/article.php?storyid=563 With that said they have stated no console port for nwn2.

Anything by Adam Miller is fantastic. Demon and Dreamcatcher series for example.

I'm pretty sure in IWD2 the moon elf was the default elf, or you could choose a wild elf or drow. But you couldn
