Making simple games
This is basically, what I have in mind, although I hope I'll be able to do better looking graphics - with a western aesthetic and a more zoomed in view for larger characters. The perspective of many JPG's is too far away from the action for my taste. I'll most likely have to invest in a drawing tablet for that though. Making it a sci-fi RPG (cyberpunk and transhumanism, not space opera) has a particular draw for me because there are so few of them. Post apocalyptic would be a second choice, fantasy a distant third. Other characteristics would be a turn based (in game world, not separate screen) battle system adapted from an existing IP, specifically Eclipse Phase. That system has sweet ideas, like interchangeable bodies for PCs - that fit right into common game mechanics (like dying and magically resurrecting). Who doesn't want to play a hacker inhibiting a nano-swarm?

Piracy
In my experience, movies that were filmed prior to high definition digital cameras don't really gain much with the blue ray transition. I have the Blade Runner tin box collectors edition DVD and I've seen the same version on Blue Ray as well and there's no real difference between the two.

Making simple games
I wanted to create an entire game, by myself (to eliminate the problem of depending on other people) from scratch and it would probably be a small one. Something like the older Final Fantasy games in terms of graphics and complexity, or a 2D adventure like Gemini Rue. Time is not of the issue, as it would be a hobby thing - getting it done right is more important than getting it done fast. While I do have some ideas that would probably require complex engines (like a magic system that allows a great level of environment manipulation), the better option would probably be to explore new settings and story ideas in already established game mechanics. What's a small project as opposed to an actual project in your terms? I'll look into it. I've seen python recommended in several places.

Making simple games
I've been considering the idea of making a simple game for a while now, specifically a 2D sprite based RPG. It doesn't really have to be an RPG but it should be a 2D game. The problem is I don't have any real programming experience or any other game development related experience for that matter. For starters I can't make up my mind whether to try software like Game Maker that does a lot of the work for you or to try to learn the basics of a programming language. If I am to pick the latter option, which language should I start with? There are so many languages on the net I get confused at what the advantages/disadvantages are, and how beginner friendly they are. After that issue is resolved (not that that's likely to happen soon) and I have a basic grasp on the language, which software would be the best for making the sprites and other graphical assets? What other skills will be necessary to get this sort of project off the ground? Is this even the right approach to the whole issue? Is making an "indie" game of reasonable production quality even feasible for a single person or is it a fool's errand? The long term goal would be to one day have a decent game to offer on a digital distribution platform like Steam. I know its a long shot, but since I chose a different career path and there's very little chance I'll ever be working in game design professionally - I'm still hoping to make my mark in the hobby I've spent so much time on.

Methinks that there could be no really fitting sequel to Syberia as the quest (for the mammoths) and its hypothetical resolution is never really the point of the tale. Rather the power of the story comes from the journey itself, the courage to leave an old life behind and give into some romantic adventure, inner passion or pure wanderlust. Any true resolution in a plot sense would let the whole thing down a and is unnecessary.

Finished Syberia. Beautiful game, particularly towards the end. It gets an easy 9/10 from me.

I've always thought something is lost in translation with some Japanese games. Been play Way of the Samurai 3 again, really like this game. Looking forward to playing 4. Translation is definitely a problem even in this day and age. ZoE2 had parts that were obviously badly translated. It shouldn't happen to Konami, they're not some garage developer. On top of that there's the usual bad/flat english voice acting. Its something I've seen in anime as well. I always listen to japanese audio with english subs if possible.

Finished Zone of the Enders 2. The action and graphics are terrific but Hideo Kojima's story and dialog are muddled garbage. Dunno what it is with japanese devs to pay so little attention to the story. Actually, forget story I'd settle for sense for starters. Now I have to finish Syberia. I like the game so far although I'm not sure its as good as the critics said it was at the time of release.

RANDOM VIDEO GAME NEWS THREAD!
Number of people working on a game doesn't really mean anything either way. If that means it'll have fancy graphics I say: who cares, graphics are not the problem of most games nowadays anyway.

Goodbye GOG.com
Codename 47 sucks but Blood Money was pretty good. Silent Assassin wasn't too bad either. The problem is the trial and error nature of the gameplay. You have to fail the mission 10 times to get it 100% right if you're going for the stealth approach.

Goodbye GOG.com
Nice, not much left to cover all the really good old games.

Silent Hill 2, BG Dark Alliance 2 and Zone of the Enders 2. Sequel orgy

You know there is that statement from whats his name that the game will be casual in nature, so there is the distinct possibility that it'll be something much simpler than an RPG and much less wide in scope than their current IP's.

SW: The Old Republic Part 3
So now that you burned through everything in less than a month, are you gonna start another character?

I'd give my left nut for anything AAA cyberpunk. Nothing shiny, mainstream and hi tech like DX HR, but real dirty cyberpunk a la Blade Runner. But basically I'd do the same for any futuristic game that doesn't include jedi, space marines and clean design in it.

RANDOM VIDEO GAME NEWS THREAD!
It might not end up a bad game, although if the story and gameplay end up being like WoW and they don't try to take the MMO further than that - then I don't see the point of it. It also might be a bit too much to expect another Starcraft game with two coming up already. Yet they haven't had a new IP for so long you kinda stop expecting them to do anything but milk their existing ones. Oh yeah these are the people that take at least half a decade to make a game, why are we discussing this again? We might not even be playing it in this incarnation

RANDOM VIDEO GAME NEWS THREAD!
I'm a little curious about what Blizzard is planning on the MMO front. I know they have a WoW expansion in the pipeline, but WoW is like 8 years old at this point. They've got to have another MMO in development at this point, but I wonder how far along it is and whether they are ramping up development on it? Will it be WoW 2, or will it go another direction? Maybe they'll mention it in 2013. I somehow doubt it'll be WoW 2, they kinda wore out Azeroth a little too much just to remake it again.

SW: The Old Republic Part 3
Well this is one of those cases where normally everything would be fine if everyone kept their mouth shut, but since it got out, the law's the law as they say. The age ratings still remain stupid and arbitrary however, especially for "under 18" content.

Does this mean he can no longer play his copy of TOR, or that he's just been kicked out of the forums?
