  1. I think the important thing about physically attractive people is trying to discern the motivations behind why she is made that way. Sometimes we can fall into tropes doing that too (the Ice Queen for example), but I was a big fan of Isabella because her design is basically to illicit the "she's a sex object" perspective, and even her superficial interactions leads one to conclude just the same. But I find her motivations interesting. She isn't there just to have sex with the male, and is frankly mostly just a woman that is comfortable with her sexuality and enjoys making other people feel a bit uncomfortable because of it. But peel back some of the layers and you get someone that is a bit deeper. I know some think it's still a bit cliched (which is fair enough) as to what her layers are, but I enjoyed it. Same with the types like Annah and Fall-From-Grace as well (although FFG is probably a bit more predictable of a counterpoint to the standard succubus). Excellent examples, as I mentioned numerous times Isabella for me was smoking hot. Yes she personified certain things that many people feel objectified women yet she also was an important and invaluable member of my party. She had realistic and worthy objectives in life, she wanted her own ship and she wanted to captain it. So for me she had many levels to her and wasn't just some sexual object that Bioware threw into the game.
  2. She is certainly presenting it from a particular point of view. Sidetracking this away from Anita's video specifically: I was chatting with a friend/co-worker today about this a bit as well, and we find it interesting. I remember someone calling for "mature" themes in DA3, such as rape. I responded with a statement that I think it'd be interesting if the male PC got raped and the player was powerless to do anything about it. The response I got was that that was clearly just being contrary to serve feminist agenda. On the one hand this has effectively painted himself into a corner. Threat of rape can only be "genuine" if it satisfies conditions he feels is "natural" and "realistic." Deviating from this expectation undermines any attempt at it being presented as mature, because he felt it'd just come off as forced to try to be different. There's two problems here: First: the only acceptable way to present this is for the woman to be the victim. I find this perspective to be somewhat telling and perhaps intrinsic to systemic/institutional ideas, which I don't think fairly line up with reality. That he outright rejects the notion that a deviation from this is a bit unsettling to me, as it reinforces my perspective that there seems to be an issue with men feeling this is the only way to present something in a "mature" way. Second: the realization that he's actually right. Take Damsel in Distress and reverse it, and you'll often get people going "they're just reversing the trope to try to prove a point." Change Double Dragon so it's some guy getting kidnapped and it's "they went away from the girl because of feminist pressures." This can be a bit unsettling itself because it gives the idea that genuine attempts to just present a scenario without any gender role implications will automatically have gender role implications assigned to them by their audience (i.e. I feel you believe Anita is demonstrating this somewhat, herself. Which is a fair criticism). So we run into a problem of "We can't have a man rescue a girl, because it's Damsel in Distress and has sexist implications." But having "woman rescuing man" gets dismissed as "they've just tried to reverse the Damsel in Distress trope." I think Mass Effect did a good job with the Virmire survivor, as one was a male, the other was a female, and both are equally valid options regardless of Shepard's sex. Though there were criticisms that one of the choices (and only one at any given time) was a potential love interest (I personally think this makes the choice more interesting. Does Shepard let his affection influence his decision?). Not all games will be able to have situations like this, however. It's certainly not an easy resolution. It seems as though ideally the best way is for these events to simply no longer be considered issues. That's easier said than done, and likely would require some level of "affirmative action" to ensure that the distribution of games that have specifically "man rescues woman" set in proportion to respective permutations, it'll be something we think about less. If there was an even 50/50 split of games that had women rescuing men in Mario's time, Anita's entire justification in using Mario as an example would be completely undermined. The issue, I feel, is that it is very pervasive, which Anita obviously feels is a problem for appropriate representation and the socializing effects it can have. (As an example, on this very forum I remember a thread where someone felt that pink was an intrinsically feminine colour and that women were biologically predisposed to find it more appealing.... This perspective I do not agree with at all and went on giant ramble responses for that as well. Perhaps had his experiences growing up been different, he'd have been less likely to assume it was something biological rather than social - or perhaps not since we can't turn back time to verify ) Cheers! Allan You make some good and thought provoking points. I do see loads of hypocrisy in certain discussions around topics you mentioned. Some people do ask for "mature" topics like rape in games but of course they are not talking about the rape of men. This one of the reasons I like Bioware games, they offer a balanced option for both straight and gay games. I do feel there is still an element of sexism in certain games and when developers do try to address this they are accused of pandering to the feminist crowd. So its a lose lose situation in many cases Saying that I have no issues with appreciating the beauty of the female body and I not going to say I don't find certain virtual characters in my many games attractive in the context of the game and a RPG. Sometimes we are made to feel guilty when we say "I like to have Romance\Sex" in my games. The argument I hear is that its "weird to want sex with pixel created people" and "get a girlfriend in RL, an RPG is not about relationships" I don't presume to tell people what should constitute there RPG experience, its different for all of us. But I will say this, almost all beauty we are exposed to in this world is "not real". News presenters, magazine models, movie stars and even strippers operate in a semi-world of fantasy. Photo shop and make-up is used to enhance aesthetics, and this is all part of what we like to see. Its what sells and its what society expects. When was the last time you saw an ugly Sky News presenter? So I have no issue with seeing beauty in female game characters. Also ladies shouldn't be judged because they happen to be intelligent and beautiful. I can guarantee you that International News Presenters, like Sky, are very happy in there jobs. Finally that video Oner posted about the game I do find sexist and insulting to women. For me it objectifies the leading character as a stripper only with her actions and its target is clearly a segment of the market who want to see women like that. Thats fine if the developers want to do that but they need to understand they will receive criticism and I won't support games like that as its one dimensional and doesn't have enough depth
  3. I did respond Remember I said my jokes are sometimes misunderstood, I'll resend my PM to you. Its strange but on the previous website I use to frequent people told me I had a weird style of posting. I never really understood what they meant. I have a policy when it comes to my posts, " everything I need to say on the Internet am I prepared to say that to the persons face in RL" I stand by that, I very seldom feel the need to insult people unless they are really rude and I try to treat everyone with respect. I do joke sometimes, but then my jokes should be obvious. I do not Troll, I feel Trolling is waste of intellectual discussion. People do sometimes mistake my jokes with Trolling. Of course like everyone in this world I get annoyed by some comments like bigotry but I really enjoy interesting debates around possibly controversial comments like religion or politics
  4. Absolutely, I have played both and enjoyed both but NWN2 is vastly superior
  5. The referendum results were unequivocal. The islands need to stay in British hands, I know oil has been found there now and so both countries will want them but IMO Argentina is using this debate for political opportunism.
  6. "giving me a lollipop because I just finished the 100th page" The way you made your point cracked me up
  7. I am not particularly fond of achievements either, I find them pointless and vacuous. So hopefully they don't implement them
  8. Interesting beast, we could probably expand on how to integrate it into a game
  9. Hi Monte Don't forget to mention we want Chainmail bikini's in PE in the next Romance\Sex thread
  10. Madae I am surprised that you don't feel bad about the fact you missed the early pledging rewards and now all you are going to get is a measly digital copy. Think about it, while the rest of us are opening our nice physical copies all you will have to keep you warm and fuzzy is an insipid and uninspiring digital copy...borrrrrrrrrrrrrring You are very stoical about this development, I would be complaining bitterly. I don't want to make to the situation worse but you do realize that because you weren't keeping your eye on this KS you missed out on gaining a memento that will symbolize and immortalize the contribution some of us were able to make towards what could be the next great iconic fantasy RPG genre?
  11. Guys I don't profess to be an expert on the USA Healthcare system but I do travel to the USA once or twice a year and try to follow as much political news as I can. This is not about someone paying for someones else's medical aid, this is honestly a question of humanity. How can the most progressive and advanced Western country in the world not have a medical aid system for all its citizens? How can any one person in the USA die because they don't get admitted to a hospital because the hospital refuses them entry The USA spends billions on warfare, some people are addicted to false celebrity culture, eating yourself to death is acceptable and protected by law and people are more interested in the lives and welfare of some fictional soapie star character than the real indigent that exist in society. I am not trying to attack the USA but something is fundamentally wrong with all this resistance to what Obama is trying to implement. An equitable public Healthcare system for all its citizens?
  12. Don't feel too chagrinned. As is written in the book of Ecclesiates, there ain't much truly new under the sun. Good point, the reality is we have a vast and comprehensive source of monsters from various games like D&D. I would think its extremely difficult to create any new monster without some similarity to other known beasts. But thats fine, we just like to get idea's and concepts. I enjoy monsters that remind me of creatures I have met in my past experiences through my exposure to fantasy books and games
  13. On all the sites I frequented when the two games were released, it was about 70% Witcher fans hurling vitriol at the then-unreleased DA2 and about a 50/50 split between Biodrones claiming DA2 would be the best RPG ever and fans of DAO who were outraged by the sequel's promised changes. Anyway, about to try "KING'S BOUNTY CROSSWORLDS GOTY." No familiarity with the title, but it was $2.00 and had better review scores than most of the other games in the sale. Now downloading Alan Wake (which flew under my radar completely until about a year ago, since it didn't hit PC until 2 years after its original ecksbawcks release.) Agx you need to be patient and continue to play Witcher 1, it does get better. If there is anything that confuses you about the plot please ask, you have always been very helpful with sharing insight in other games so don't be embarrassed. Have you had a threesome with the Vampiresses yet? You'll enjoy that
  14. You right I suppose, I need to see this as the glass is half full in the event he passes away (I must sound terrible being so callous about a persons life )
  15. "still can't figure out which was better, looking at her or have her explain all this stuff to me" That cracked me up, you funny Nep
  16. Interesting but that still leaves me concerned, the real magic is in the books. They are far superior to the TV series, and the series is excellent.
  17. But GD didn't you predict the crash of the USA economy during Obama's second term? I am sure it was you who suggested people should get out of equities and move there money into more consistent investments like Gold? ( You see I listen to what you say ) You probably are aware that the USA stock markets have seen unprecedented highs the last few weeks and this is despite the fact the employment rate hasn't really improved. But companies are recording profits so there is money been made, real money. Obama hasn't been the Grim Reaper of economic doom some predicted, it looks like things are really getting better in the USA Oh stocks are going to go up and down always. If you are playing for short term you can do well if you get lucky. Last week was a perfect mix of of increase dividend payments by sixty or so F500 companies coupled with a rash of stock buybacks from a suprisingly large number of companies driving up stock prices over all. Don't even try to read into what they are doing that, there is too many possibilities. You notice though there was a cool down this week as investors start selling off to capitaize their gains. But if you are looking long term the biggest question mark is the strength of the dollar. Buying real assets or real commodities (like gold) are less about making big returns, although that can happen I'm VERY happy to say, than it is protecting what you have from currency devaluation. My biggest concern with the current admin is not just spending and borrowing (although that is a problem that will come to a head in the future) but their "quantative easing", which is basicly using imaginary money to buy up treasuries and bonds, and pump more cash into the market ultimately. The problem is you then have twice the dollars chasing the same number of assets which causes the value of the dollar to drop. Do it too much too often and.... you get the idea. If the dollar devaluates it does not matter how well a stock is doing if the buying power of the company benefiting from the capital is crippled. And of course if that happens the buying power of investors is hurt as well since it costs more to just get buy in life so they start selling off for the cash and the dominos start falling from there. Or they don't. If they do the folks invested in real assets are happy because investors start buying in and driving up the price. If they don't then your real assets don't go up and you probably don't make any money. But you won't lose it all because they have value in and of themselves. You've heard the old saying, gold has never been worth nothing. But I posted elesewhere I would not buy into gold right now. It's seriously over priced. It's really worth about $800 per and this around $1500. If the ecomony tanks it will go up, if it doesn't it is going to correct sooner or later. I've already sold off more than half of what I had. I would not look at stock activity as any kind of barometer for overall economic health. There are too many reasons why things happen they way they do. I'd look at the buying power of the currency because when you get right down to it, this is a market economy. When people consume and spend money it does well, when they don't it dosen't. Right now I'm not encouraged, that's why I invest the way I do. But I might be wrong, I consider myself well educated and well read but I'm not an economist by any means. Wow, we really got OT, my fault. This is just one of my favorite subjects. Thats an impressive insight into economics in my opinion. I am also not an economist but I have money invested in various funds both locally and internationally and try to understand as much as I can. Obviously everyone should understand investments like your retirement annuities and how well they are doing. Good post GD
  18. What we can agree upon is that as fans of the golden age of cRPGs, we hope that the SoTA is a decent game (even it is a funny offline single player/MMO hybrid) and that PE and TToN kick some serious gaming a*se! Well said, I concur
  19. I agree that you can't jump to conclusions. It's why I said in my posts: 1. There's also been claims that the game is already funded with private investment of at least 7 million. 2. It's been reported in wired quite a few months ago that he has the 7 million for this game already? My first point has the word 'claim'. It's not certain. My second point has a question mark at the end, asking a question? And I was referencing the wired news article from a few months ago. The 'evidence' doesn't look good. Mr RG (no more rat tail references, I'm feeling a little more generous tonight) touches on this in the latest RPS article. http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/03/13/garriott-on-shroud-of-the-avatar-why-he-needs-ks/ In the earlier post, I made a Chris Roberts aside deliberately. Roberts was very open about seeking funding for Star Citizen from multiple sources in addition to two different crowd funding campaigns he described chasing funding from the traditional sources: industry and finances from memory. Broadly I have no problems with RG having already funded SoTA to X million but it is a little disingenous not to disclose this in his KS campaign but instead to draw heavily on gamer nostalgia for his classic series in the pitch and to imply that are funds are vital to completing some sort of spiritual successor to Ultima (I know he doesn't use the exact phrase but it is very heavily implied). I get the appeal of crowd sourced funding: for gaming companies they get great publicity, de facto pre-orders, probably attracts co-matching funds from traditional sources or can be used as collateral for loans and importantly charges no interest and has very little legal rights in case the project falls over. All I ask is that they are up front about it; more so for a man who is seriously independently wealthy as by not doing so, they appear dishonest and attract controversy. You make some good points and I can't disagree with everything you have mentioned, the reality for me is I feel we are not seeing the full picture around funding. But I suppose the other point is "does it matter". End of the day I want to play entertaining and old school PC based RPG. I don't mind if RC has already raised additional funding for this game. I will only contribute less than $50 anyway to this project. Some people will say it does matter as its the principle of being misinformed about the funds he needs. But in this case the principle isn't that important for me. I would be much more upset if this has happened during the PE and Torment KS
  20. I was an avid gamer already back then. I played D&D on Intellivision (Cloudy Mountain), the Atari console, and I played Alley Cat etc in workplaces on the pc, and of course I played my Commodore 64 so hard, I had to get another one, before I moved on to Amiga 500. Some games were brilliant back then, and they will remain that way. Question is, does this claim work for old adventure games and CRPGs? All in all, one thing is certain, I used my imagination to feel in the graphical suspension-of-belief gaps when it came to adventure games, and it sure worked. One year I was entirely caught up in two games. I played them over and over: Cauldron II and Bard's Tale. Let's say, I've tried them today, and it's only Cauldron II, where the graphics feel a bit bearable. That actually seem true for all platformers and action games. I tried Wizball the other day, another favourite back in the days, and it's fun enough today too, perhaps because it's a soundly engineered interface system that is the game. The "feel" is still there. So, I agree with BruceVC here, there is a bottom line for graphics. I'm also playing through IE-classics at the moment, and I draw the line where Bruce draws it. Those old Ultima games with just dots just wouldn't cut it by a mile after having played, say, NWN 1&2 or Skyrim. Its funny you mention Ultima but thats exactly what I was thinking about when I made my point, I was looking at the earlier Ultimas on GOG and I just couldn't imagine playing it
  21. It is most likely, he is after all quite a corpulent gentleman. It is most likely, he is after all quite a corpulent gentleman. Mmm, good points raised. Okay this worries me immensely. Get writing George, get writing !!
  22. Is it the industry, or the general gaming population, that wants this? I have been happy with graphics for a long time now but I feel like I am somewhat unique in this regard among my friends. To be fair, too, there are certainly "old classics" that I have a hard time going back to due to how dated they look. Nostalgia can help me look past it, but if it is a game I didn't play at the time, it can be hard sometimes. Is it the industry, or the general gaming population, that wants this? Nostalgia can help me look past it, but if it is a game I didn't play at the time, it can be hard sometimes. Same here, while I'm certainly not opposed to beautiful graphics and they can certainly add to my experience, it's hardly the dominant benchmark I rate games by, in fact it's very far down the list. Look at a game like Mount & Blade. It looks like a PS2 game, yet I think it's a fantastic game. I do ultimately think that it's in large part due to the general gaming public that TEH GRAFX seem to be so important these days, which is ironic since we've reached the point where a designer can put pretty much anything into a game and make it look believable and even have fine details. How much more is is throwing however many more shader cores and vertex pipelines and such at our games going to enhance immersion and enjoyment? In my opinion "flat" graphics are rapidly approaching maximum capacity. The next level of immersion lies in virtual reality like Occulus Rift and such. I have a limit with Graphics around what I can accept, so for example I played Torment recently and with the Wide Screen Mod that was fine. But anything worse than that I would battle with
  23. This, for me the Game of Thrones TV series is not as important as the books. He needs to finish the books and urgently, they are the greatest fantasy series I have ever read. But why do you think he may die of a heart attack?
