I wonder if Fader just mistook Vermont with Virginia (Would be weird though). Since Vermont is the 14th state by date of statehood after North Carolina (12th) and Rhode Island (13th)
that was fast. But, good. They probably couldn't keep 80+ employees on South Park alone.
What are the chances this is a ex-publisher chipping in? Seems like someone offered them a contract in reaction.
You don't need to survive solely on Kickstarter. It just has to help tiding over till a new project comes along.
Didn't Schaefer say too that they went the Kickstarter route apart from the adventure gig because they would have had to fire people otherwise?
The management in this case refused salary for the last 6-7 months to keep employees and that guy was hired in thinking they can continue with the project. Then they got cancelled. There's next to nothing they could have done about it. They don't have any other sort of income so a cancellation will almost certainly come with lay-offs. The cancellation itself seemed to happen shortly before or while the guy began work. This way atleast he gets paid for the day.
Obsidian doesn't even have a "real" marketing or sales department. They are a contractor, not a publisher.
Man, today was a such a ****ty day. Apart from other personal things 22 belgian kids died here in Switzerland in a crash yesterday.
Makes you think....
It's sad that dev takes the reputation hit, while the publisher remains anynomous even though it's publishers call to kill the project.
It's also unjustified. If it was really Sawyer's project this was very sudden as Sawyer was still checkin' Design Documents shortly before GDC.
I'm pretty sure more people are on the MCA/Tim Cain train than Fargo (Hell, I really think they could make more than the Double Fine Kickstarter looking at forums). And they could also capitalize not only on Fallout but Planescape Torment, Icewind Dale and so on. I really doubt thats an issue.
There is no buisness tactic against a publisher cancelling a project on a middle-sized private dev.
Other than that considering their last two games their own buisness side has improved immensly from the beginning already. Thats not to say its perfect and they shouldn't look for other methods to get money but just a little bit defending here. They have (seemingly) already restructered quite a few times.
Considering what just happened, I hope this doesn't mean that Josh got/gets kicked too. Start a Kickstarter Obsidian, we'll throw money at you, no questions asked, to atleast keep some of these employees for a while.
It's a really good game but certain aspects are overhyped including the C&C system which was IMO, while nice, not that impressive (Though I don't care for pure branching in general. Books and Movies are also capable of that, not to mention I'm not actually affecting details in the world like charachters. In a way I'm just choosing to go left or right at a roadblock. Forgive the rant ^^)
