Blizzard Forums to use real ID name
Thorton_AP replied to Thorton_AP's topic in Computer and Console
**** no, there's no way in hell I'm going to give Blizzard my real name (not that I play WoW or use Battle.net, so there'd be no reason to register there in the first place) Point epically missed. Post your name and info here if you'd prefer. I wasn't talking about you sharing your information with Blizzard. But rather, with a large internet community that you just condoned for posting this man's personal information all over the internet for all to see. Hey, if you're okay if someone posted all of your information for all to see, then that's your own prerogative. I have a feeling you wouldn't be, and if someone did this to you and it resulted in harassment, you'd be none-to-pleased about it. -

Apparently the dude's entire Facebook profile has either been locked or deleted due to abuse. I have no doubt that these internet retards are actually dialing up that phone number (which in retrospect had less certainty that it's the right one as the thread went on) just to "prove a point." Basically you have a lot of angry people that so highly value their ability to post on some company's website that they've resorted to real-life harassment simply so they can go "see!? See!? Don't take away my precious ability to post anonymously on the forums!!!!!" Nevermind stopping by the address (which was later shown to possibly be incorrect as well). Since you think it's not a big deal though, why don't you go onto Blizzard's forums and post your contact information as well. It's just some inconvenience right? It's apparently a good way to prove your point! -

Uhhhh... I'm almost positive that you're mistaken about that. And I hope he doesn't. Hey, if you're cool with someone going around inconveniencing someone's life, then that sure speaks volumes about your character and integrity too. -

While he made his point, I do honestly hope that that godmode chap faces legal ramification for his actions. We can sit here smugly going "hahaha told you," but the reality of it is he demonstrated his complete lack of integrity in doing what he did. In order to prove a point, he decided to post someone's information all over for all to see. There are better ways he could have gone about doing it. But he justifies himself because the mod shared this information. Tsk tsk. Sometimes I wish humanity would just hurry up and eradicate itself. I'm not a religious person, but I doubt any of us really deserve anything but the eternal damnation that would supposedly come to us. Le sigh. As the "blue" said, his name has already been in the game manual of every game he's been a part of. It's not like his name is a secret. -
Ultima 6 Project (U VI remake) V1.0 released!
Thorton_AP replied to Jaesun's topic in Computer and Console
It was a long time ago. IMO you'd be wise to revisit it. Personally I felt that they continued to improve until the apex that culminated in Ultima VII (and it's sequel Serpent Isle). -

In my experiences with Blizzard, if you want good tech support you go online and file help tickets on their website without actually using the forums whatsoever. -

Point taken, but I'm still not convinced that using real names is going to discourage the career trolls that much, if they aren't also convinced that Blizzard will somehow use that to better police/punish trollish behavior. I think one of the main "features" is that it removes posting under the level 1 alt. THough that could have been fixed by just using a standard user name. This is a bit brute force. Given the "outcry" so far, I think this is already convincing a lot of people (trolls or otherwise) to rethink their postings on the WoW forum. Some people have already gone back and deleted old posts in case the change is retroactive. The cynic in me wonders if that's because they acted like a dip**** and don't want people googling their name and seeing what a retard they can act like when they aren't accountable for their behaviours. The people claim it's because they just want to protect themselves and so forth, but I'm always skeptical. If there's one thing I've learned not to trust, it's people on the internet -
Ultima 6 Project (U VI remake) V1.0 released!
Thorton_AP replied to Jaesun's topic in Computer and Console
I felt that the isometric in Ultima VI was so ridiculously subtle that it pretty much still was a top-down game. What was it exactly that you didn't like about Ultima VI? Because predating it (I never played V), I find all the other Ultima games (including IV) to be very drab and less than stellar experiences. I didn't find the settings had any real life in them or anything. Characters were bland, and so forth. Whereas in Ultima VI, you had a party of adventurers that you could initiate conversation with. The NPCs had schedules and would do various things at various parts of the day that made sense and were consistent. The combat was straight forward with melee attacks being simple targets against the adjacent target, and ranged attacks having a cursor pop up that you could move and pick your target, and so forth. It was the game that really introduced me to the world of RPG. Ultima VII just took it to the next level. It was real-time (which was an adjustment), but the world in that one was even more alive. It was the game that converted me to a PC gamer. Such awesome games! I'd love to play Ultima VI again, now that I wouldn't be so awful at it with no idea what to do! Haha. -

Last I checked the forums were still a gongshow. At the same time, it's probably easier to get the trolls to just leave of their own volition, then to get 1000 moderators to try to keep up 24/7. I think the idea is that if people have a small level of anonymity pulled away, they may think twice. This may not be the case. Though if Mr. Public Official was a gigantic douchebag in the Paladin forums, it certainly would be laugh out loud funny if his antics were exposed haha. But I suspect this will likely increase in the amount of fake names. Having said that, I heard that that is VERY risky should your account be compromised. I recently had my account compromised and things all went off without a hitch. Imagine calling Blizzard Support saying you're name was Amanda Huggingkiss -
C&VG: Sega rules out Alpha Protocol sequel
Thorton_AP replied to funcroc's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
Is "more games" really relevant to the giant bombshell that was Modern Warfare 2 (4.7 million units on release day)? To the bulk of the people getting the game, I doubt they even realized this. It's not like Dragon Age (a significantly more delayed game) had any issues. This is possible for sure. But I still think it would have had comparisons to games like Gears of War and other third person shooters. The complaint wasn't necsessarily "OMG this isn't as good as ME2" (though some did say that), it by all accounts was also NOT a simple pick up and shoot type game. Even though it looks like it. I still feel the reviews would have been harsh. I think the results would have been insignificant. -

Note that this change only affects those that post on the forum. Which means you can easily take your posting time to a different forum if it is a deal breaker for you. -
Ultima 6 Project (U VI remake) V1.0 released!
Thorton_AP replied to Jaesun's topic in Computer and Console
Ultima 6 also had fantastic npc scheduling and whatnot. Heck, I remember going to the pub at night just to get some food, and going solo mode with my party members so that I could make them all sit on chairs haha. The Blue Boar Inn always had good food! -

C&VG: Sega rules out Alpha Protocol sequel
Thorton_AP replied to funcroc's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
Those are not excuses. Those are "facts" Yes, Obsidian could have done a better job as well, but the release fiasco was all Sega's doing and that ended up hurting the sales. Not really sure if they were afraid of Dragon Age that much or whether the initial pr company they had handling the marketing dropped the ball completely and thus they had to push back the release date to actually get some marketing for the game. Just like with movie box office in gaming as well the release date will decide a lot in some cases. Releasing a game right after a massive hit such RDR (and against Alan Wake, UFC 2010 etc.) is not wise from a marketing nor a sales point of view. Nor is it very wise to go against Spiderman 3 or say Shrek 4 in movie theaters. If games like RDR, Alan Wake, and UFC 2010 significantly hurt the sales for Alpha Protocol, then I'd suspect the impending releases of Dragon Age, and Modern Warfare 2, would have significantly hurt the sales for Alpha Protocol as well. I don't think that the reviews would have been significantly different had they been released then. I had people at work ask about this game, and the word of mouth was all about the clunky controls. I tried to persuade some to reconsider, but it was more just an eye opener for what people expect from these types of games. If it's Sega's Fault, it's approving the current design implementation and funding it. It didn't sound like AP had the smoothest development cycle, and while I looooove the game, I don't think it appeals to the bulk of the gaming market at this time. As a user of the game, I am glad of at least one thing they did add to the game during the delay (equipment comparisons). -

Are people making excuses for Obsidian again? It's unfortunate that the game didn't sell well, but I don't think this is really Sega's fault. Nor Red Dead Redemptions fault. Given the similarities to Deus Ex, I think it's more just a demonstration of the changing in the gaming audience. Which is reflected in the reviews. -
By today's standards though, Deus Ex is the game I have more recently played through in its entirety. Not a game like BG2 or Final Fantasy. Deus Ex to me is near the apex of gaming enjoyment for me. The only thing I didn't really like about Area 51 when I first played it, was the realization that it would be ending soon.

I think the idea behind it was that they wanted your decisions (or lack of decision) to not be something you could easily go back on. In some ways I didn't mind it. It could have been handled in more ingenious ways though IMO.

Don't forget the Soviets that drove around in vehicles with USA marked on them, or were shipped along the miles and miles (and miles) of rail lines provided by the Western Nations. Or those that didn't go hungry because food stores were supplemented by shipments coming in through Murmansk, Vladivostok, and the Middle East. Heck, 14% of all tanks built by the UK were sent over to the Soviet Union. I'm sure that the Russian people shooting at Krauts with Sherman tanks weren't too worried about the evils of the Capitalist machine known as the United States. A large part of the Soviet Union's industrial successes came from the fact that a large part of their manufacturing supplies were shipped in via Lend-Lease, from machine parts to natural resources, in addition to industrial streamlining that could be done because factories were not needed to construct various components. If you wish to trivialize the contributions of other nations, then you spit on the memories of those Soviet soldiers that valiantly fought back the German War Machine with those very contributions. I'm sure the brave Russians that fought in the war are very grateful to have you in their corner twisting the facts just like the Premier did. Don't forget the boondoggle that was placing large numbers of your men and equipment within close proximity of the border, despite the realization that SHOULD have been learned from the humiliation that was The Winter War that your military isn't what you think it is. Although I'm sure the Germans didn't mind encircling millions of Russian soldiers and forcing them to surrender.

I remember when I first got a card that supported detailed textures for Deus Ex: Wow!! At the time, I loved that the game had several points where I figured it would end... but didn't! Today it might be more of an issue as I'm at a point where long games have become a negative because I am finding it hard to motivate myself to replay a 60 hour game. I mean, I spent about 40ish hours on several playthroughs of Alpha Protocol, but only played through DA once.

I am not one to take the contributions of the Soviets in WW2 lightly. They far and away incurred the largest cost. I attribute this more to the Russian people than a necessity of it being Joseph Stalin in charge. A large part of the Russian pooch-screw at the start of Operation Barbarossa was a result of Comrade Stalin's purging of the military ranks. It was trial by fire for a lot of the chain of command, and their failure to execute an effective defense in depth against the initial German offensive is in large part on Stalin's hands, as it was a result of him purging his military officers. Fortunately for us, the Russian Winter is old faithful. It's not really a surprise that the Russian counter-offensives always came in the winter. Seems to be the usual recourse for how Russia would fight its wars. (This is of course ignoring things like Lend-Lease and multi-front conflicts for the Germans, as well as Hitler blowing a gasket and relieving his most capable and senior Generals and replacing them with lapdogs like Himmler).

I know this has already been said but: If it is required to be a legal immigrant or actual citizen to have your license, there is no need to indicate if someone is a legal citizen or immigrant on their driver's license. The potential risk IMO is too high.

I'm sorry I almost didn't buy this game!

It's a wonder that he bothered to playthrough the game another 7 times after being blocked on his very first playthrough.
