The contribution women make towards gaming development
Nepenthe replied to BruceVC's topic in Way Off-Topic
Anders: Isabela, you never talk about the mages' plight. Isabela: What's there to say? Anders: There's plenty to say. Isabela: And you say enough for the lot of us, don't you think? Anders: So you're telling me you have no opinion on the matter? Isabela: None whatsoever! Anders: That can't be true. Isabela: No, I'm afraid I'm really this shallow. -

This is an interesting perspective, just so I am clear from a Finnish perspective, and based around the fact Finland is a very equal society, what are current issues with what Feminists want in Finland. For example are you saying that there is pressure to put women in jobs that they aren't necessarily qualified for? Classic example. At least x % of board members in listed companies should be women. Why only listed companies, the one that have already made it? I have a startup with a bunch of my male friends, we work our butts off for a decade and instead of selling to google/apple, choose to get listed. Immediately we have to hire a bunch of extraneous women to enjoy the fruits of our labour? Quotas in general are what I'm opposed to. They don't remove barriers, they create factual inequality. -

So it's sexual harrassment now asking men if they will wear a bra or not? I'm pretty sure that asking a woman if they will wear a bra or not is sexual harassment.- 256 replies

I think a part of this discussion is based on the fact that, even in Western countries, there are significant differences in actual gender equality. This is something that the Internet, as a melting pot, blurs, leading to such absurdities as slutwalks all over the world, when the core issue was what some sheriff in bum****, arizona had said... Now, I'm going to posit that I live in (one of) the most equal countries in the world. Everybody has actually the same opportunities. What feminism fails to grasp is that equal opportunities is what actual equality is vs. if everything isn't at least 50 % women, there's a gender imbalance that needs to be addressed. I personally consider the argument that all differences between genders are cultural to be blatantly fallacious. -

To scale back from what I said in the other thread, I'm pretty sure that the MP modes finance themselves via the microtransactions etc. ie. this is not money taken away from sp development but budgeted separately due to the extra money it's going to bring in. If my friends weren't spread over a multitude of platforms, I might even give this a shot. As it is, this is just an unnecessary feature for me. I don't get why don't they allow for multiplatform multiplayer in non competitive games, it kind of makes for a more appealing player base.BTW, I'm digging your new avatar and i'm listening to a rap version of La Cucaracha to celebrate it. Thank you, Ron Mexico really gets around...

It is now. It wasn't then.

Happily, my dad has older brothers and he's had to deal with their stubborness re: driving, so that's why he's giving it up at the first signs.Hope he sticks to it...

Dad (who's close to 80) fell asleep at the wheel today on a highway. He's ok, but he's decided he's going to to stop driving this year. Meaning that there's an even bigger pressure on me ( an only child) to find employment in Helsinki, since I'm going to have to be around to help my parents... Stress, I has it...

Personally I don't find this believable, at least not on average. Outside of internet crazies I have never met a business person that would just brush off an application because it is a woman. But lets suppose this exists and is massively practised. What would the reasoning be? Just that "I don't like women" or is there some perception that a woman with kids will work less and is more high maintenance? They ruin the atmosphere in a workplace. Ask any (most) woman... -

The best ending meaning two seconds of Shepard breathing. Come on, I mean Jesus. Also changes the scene where they are affixing Shepard's name to the memorial wall.. and then don't do it. But, it's a different and probably for most people the best possible ending in the game... that the changes to it are minute, don't change those facts.

What he said. I have no idea how much they changed the limits, though, but I definitely needed to play it back in the day. I'm sure that with a bunch of friends it could have been a fun diversion, but with a random assortment of xbox livers, it was dire.

Well, afaik Twitcher has no tacked-on multiplayer, so that's a plus in their book. I mean, if they are going to spend time on content I'm going to miss, I'd rather it be in SP than an unnecessary MP mode- 256 replies

God, I hope they don't force me into playing it, like they did with ME3.

This is prolly relevant to some of the quirks, though I know for certain that people have been EAW'd for an investigation (though they'd been imprisoned in absentia)... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Arrest_Warrant

Adult females overthrown teen males as largest gaming demographic

Who would suggest that was even a thing? It'd be like asking for the guy who designed a blender to design you a car.Just because a casual gamer is still a gamer doesn't mean that every game would cater to them, surely. They wouldn't try to reach to that "untapped potential"? Surely you jest? -
Yeah, that's why they've set up this keep thing.

Yeah, there is a real flawed view by the local conspiracy theorists on these forums that Assange will get sent to Sweden and suddenly end up in the USA and be executed. So Assange's objections to be extradited to Sweden is based on the argument " he will be killed by the USA if gets sent to Sweden" And this rumour has been encouraged by Assange to help his case. conspiracy theorists are so easily manipulated. Unlike you, right? I, and several others I believe, have already gone over the oddities in this case. Basically the thing that legally sticks out like a sore thumb to me is the fact that the Swedes are insisting that Assange is extradited to Sweden when he hasn't yet been charged vs. asking for the local police in UK to hear him on their behalf, which is what I believe they'd normally do...

It's not a distinction between a sports fan and a gamer. In football, for example, there are fans that get into the team - know the songs, the players, history and they always sneer at fans that don't or that casually watch (prawn sandwich brigade is a common moniker for these people). So it's a similar deal.Yes, I understand that. It doesn't make logical sense, but I understand it.But from the perspective of the team/team owners, do you think that they only think of the one of those two fans who go to the matches, buy a ticket, buy concessions but only one knows all the teams history? From a game developer perspective, if there's more money to be made in quick turn-around mobile games than in longer development for console/PC do you think they care if its "casuals" instead of "die-hards" playing?Looking down at the "casuals" is meaningless **** measuring, to be honest.Even sports teams will offer "extras" they think they can use to score more money from the die-hards. (Whether sideline passes, season tickets, memorabilia) Using the assumed preferences of someone who only plays candy crush saga to plan your new fantasy rpg is doomed to failure - that's why the distinction is important. -

Yeah, I think that there isno reason to suddenly pretend that there is no difference between casual and non-casual gamers just because there's womyn involved... -

Off the top of my head, I can name one female gamer, in the sense of the word I would use, which doesn't include people who play candy crush saga exclusively. I wonder how much age is a factor here (looking above, not necessarily much, but...) I mean, back when I was in high school in late 90s, just the fact that I knew how to use a computer labeled me a "nerd" and thus an undesirable male companion. Now that I chat with ladies born, say, 10 years after me, they already have completely different attitudes towards this sort of stuff. -
I dunno, both of the two have been mishandled, Cousins backfired badly last year in a "prove yourself now or be a backup forever situation", which I can forgive him, and Schiano royally messed Freeman up. Freeman's probably a better bet of the two, since he's probably dirt cheap and amenable to tryout type deals. Luke McCown's probably going to get released by Saints (unless they keep three QBs for the precise reason of having two very solid backups) and I'm sure some other viable guys are going to get released over the next week - Hell, Fisher practically said as much: http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000383236/article/fisher-rams-have-all-the-confidence-in-the-world-in-hill (Btw. points for NFL media for reading Fisher's message entirely the wrong way - Hill's not their guy, Hill's starting week 1 because they realize that Bradford's career is probably over and they'll prefer to either get someone who can start later this year + at least most of next year while they try to draft a new franchise QB. If they finish last due to Hill, all the better for them.)
