  1. this = me I'm a lawyer, but I'd rather be a game producer. I actually hope to make enough money as a lawyer that I can quit and start producing games instead this of course will never happen, but its the dream that keeps me trudging into the office (and the paycheck). Honestly though, my jobs pretty awesome, I work at a small business and estate planning firm, it's pretty relaxed here. If I COULD make a game, it would be much more deus ex than mass effect.
  2. this made my day
  3. I like this: by following slowtrains suggestion of just rewarding the ends rather than the means, it opens up stealth and persuasion as equally viable methods for resolving conflicts. killing enemies should not be a faster way to improve your character than choosing a stealth route. big amounts xp for killing enemies is punishment to the non combat character. I am ok, as I said before, with token amounts of xp for kills, just so that if you're forced to kill, you feel some form of reward for it. then again, in a proper game there wouldnt be so much freely available ammo, so kills would be rewarded with gear, which ought to be plenty enough incentive to go the combat route even if there was no good xp reward for it
  4. Bioshock maybe riddick maybe company of heroes wow Portal maybe world of goo resident evil 4 (but not 5) shadow of colossus Rock Band maybe Braid maybe the Witcher maybe stalker left 4 dead Far Cry (wait how old is this game?) maybe Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (its the best console shooter i've played since perfect dark, but its not as good as that game was for it's time. imo) maybe Batman Arkham Asylum (mostly because I think it will greatly influence future superhero games) maybe mass effect maybe Bethesda's Fallout: Wasteland Explorer (don't go nuts over this, im merely posting it because it might end up creating a newish subgenre: the EARPFPS - (exploration action roleplay fps) these are my (and some others') current guesses at likely candidates of recent (5 year limit) games. I wanted to put BG&E and prince of persia but they are both outside the somewhat arbitrary 5 year limit on "new" not many rpg's on my guesses list... thats also 15+ games in 5 years. thats 3 a year if they all made it. im surprised at myself for nominating so many since when i think of my favorite games nearly all of them are much older than 5 years
  5. lol no offendedness! i was just confused! "don't tase me bro!!"
  6. i could kind of see that logic, thats similar to why i nominated bioshock really.
  7. lol yeah i totally 100% agree with portal, mass effect i'm personally not sold on yet. i think riddick stands a better chance at being recognized as better down the line. i think mass effect may eventually be somewhat forgotten because bioware will keep releasing new games, each essentially replacing the last (since they are so similar) i could be wrong though, why do you think mass effect might get there?
  8. no moar derail thread!!! was not thread about defining terms! was thread about nominating games as possible future classics! no! moar! derail! thread!
  9. yeah some authors dont write for money, they write for the pleasure of writing. but they are still glad if they get some $ at the end of the day.
  10. why is nwn their most successful game? what is the rubric of success you are applying here? financial - total net? i presume mass effect made more $ but thats based on nothing concrete financial cost to net ratio? gross? ratings? personal opinion? i just am curious what you mean
  11. That's more of a problem with quest design in general than with games where quests are the only way to receive XP. yeah i agree its a problem with quest design. what do you feel are the problems associated with quests being the primary/only xp source?
  12. im not sure i follow you here.... all i said was what i presumed bhlaab was trying to say. what are you responding too? when did i talk about metagaming and what did i say about it? what are you trying to say? i find this all to be very confusing....

  14. some games are waaaayyyy not fun on easy mode. left 4 dead on easy is boring as hell for example
  15. i think he's talking about people saving before a quest and then doing the quest in the way that grants the most benefit, instead of doing what seems right for your character/personality which is something many of us have done in games where the way you resolve a quest can drastically alter the reward you recieve.
  16. that was a long article. i have to say, im more interested in the game now than i was before. before my interest hovered at "i guess i should probably get it to see if its decent" now its "i'll probably get it, hopefully its not too boring" ... i'm still recovering from nwn.... i actually had more fun with mass effect than that game. volourn be damned
  17. i agree with purkake and calax on this one I wouldnt put it on my list of games I think will one day be considered a classic but thats the fun, we can all have our own guesses. though it would work better if people remember this thread in ten years to see who was right.... or if i had a time machine.....
  18. bioshock w/multiplayer = stupid waste of stupids i think this game looks like garbage. the best way to play bioshock was limiting yourself to not using any direct attacks. when all your kills must be environmental or turning the enemies on eachother the game becomes a very intense action/puzzle game. big daddies are a total nightmare until you get the crossbow with the electric traps.
  19. what in the world is God Hand? never heard of it in my life. Do you mean God of War? that game sold millions edit nm someone already answered!
  20. with real friends? left 4 dead absolutely
  21. buy em all. if you got the skril like me i'm rich! ok im mostly joking, but really just look at which exclusive games look most appealing, and definitely find out what your kids friends are using, the systems should match if they want to play games online together. which is a TON of fun. left 4 dead with 4 friends = best online game ever. (no my friends dont have gaming pc's)
  22. i was expecting a whole series of quests to evolve around the relations between the children of atom, moriarty, and simms. I thought my disarming the bomb would be what ignited a firestorm of conflict in megaton that I would be in the middle of. nope. click. here's a house with "themes" you can buy. whoopee. waste. of. space.
  23. I am also in favor of just making xp for quests. killing people should award a token amount of xp though, just so you don't feel like you wasted your ammo for nothing. but 95% of the xp should come from quests edit: i feel its important to get SOME xp for killing things. remember how much better castlevania got when it adopted an xp system for killing stuff? (i know thats not an rpg, I'm just pointing out that xp is a great reward, and its good to give for doing almost anything, but to eliminate grinding and balance the game, questing should account for nearly all the xp earned)
  24. damnit.
  25. but you are describing lotr magic? thats like the epitome of high fantasy, which is why i posted my "its not about magic" theory
