i remember getting the phone call from local gamestore that torment had arrived on it's day of release. I convinced my mom to drive me there so i could buy it immediately. i was so excited. i ran into the store to get the new game "from the guys who made fallout!" (that was what i thought at the time, its somewhat truish) and stopped dead in my tracks. i was expecting to see a huge wall of it with other excited gamers eagerly snatching it up. instead i saw no sign of it. i wandered around and eventually found two copies on the bottom shelf of the new game rack, they were sideways so the cover didnt even show. I think more people know about the game now than when it came out. Maybe in 30 years when you walk into the gamestore equivelent of an arthouse theater you'll see posters of it on the wall. and when you go to the mulitplex equivelent gamestore, you won't even see posters for halo, because "nobody cares about old games" if games follow the trends of movies though, there will always exist the small budget masterpiece alongside the big budget transformers 2 pos.

is there a lesbian romance option? better yet, a three way option? edit: the game in action looks completely ridiculous. i hope it's fun, because it looks silly. like a grindhouse D&D, but because the blood is mortal kombat style instead of Fallout 1+2 style, it just looks awful. more games need good death animations.

its getting good reviews (nhl 10) do you have to be a hockey fan to enjoy it? i dont like sports but I have enjoyed a few sports games over the years. fun gameplay is fun gameplay.

a lot of people hate raging bull. my girlfriend included, yet she loves taxi driver. in the areas of art and entertainment everyone has an opinion and even great classics can be disliked by some people.

deus ex is one of my top three games of all time. its not perfect (a few slow parts in the second half), but in the many areas where it succeeds... well, it's genius. i just bought that capcom three pack: devil may cry 4, dead rising, lost planet. i expect to get a few days of fun out of each of those games.

because torment is generally well respected by game critics, it will continue to make those top game lists that most publications create now and then. as such, hardcore gamers of the younger generation WILL seek it out to play it. and as games become more accepted by society and we start seeing history of gaming classes in colleges (just like film 101 classes of today - where people might watch a "raging bull" type film) more and more people will eventually be exposed to torment. it will not be totally forgotten, but it may become as niche as movies like "persona" or "rashomon". most people dont even know what they are, but you ask a film critic and they can talk to you for hours about it. torment will eventually be like that. hell, black isle studios could one day be seen as influential to rpgs as kurosawa was to film you never know!

i think people are misreading that halo comment. i think that guy was saying that DA will fail because halo odst is coming out this year as competition for the dollars of guy-who-only-buys-one-game-a-year or maybe IM misreading the comment, in which case: carry on.

Awesome/interesting games no one has heard of

vagrant story is intensely hard and requires a huge amount of grinding to get through the game. it also has a fantastic story and style which makes it worth the effort. i can see why it never took off though, the extreme difficulty and grindy nature make it somewhat unpleasant for gamers who just want to play a game and not "work" at it. -
i was white/blue. im a lawyer. pretty accurate. dark ages characters that i'm probably going to put in my party: morrigan allister and the gay dude if he's funny and not annoying why these three? - because i think the game is going to be kinda lame, so im hoping that these three combined will end up with the most humorous dialogs to keep me interested enough to want to keep playing. all the other characters look about as funny as roadkill. none of the characters look very interesting to me so far, but i've seen very little of them so i cant know for sure yet

im sure most people have heard of this, its pretty new still puzzle quest: challenge of the warlords it's a mix between a puzzle game and an rpg, but its really fun. -
Emotion and games. sadness and character attachment

none of the moments I mentioned did it for ya? shadow of the colossus? your heart must be like stone and I thought of another one: towards the end of world of goo. that existential moment when you climb into the "heavens" to confront "mother". there was so much awe-inspiring whimsy going on i felt like the game had goo'd its way inside my heart. sounds pretty gross. but it was awesome. oh snap, and The Darkness: sitting on the couch with the girlfriend and then what ends up happening later. that game was very compelling, and had some solid emotional threads in it too. -
Worrying when that happens, but it passes. Plus it's an opportunity to search for games you've overlooked. no kidding. I've been going through this exact phase ever since i beat batman into the ground last week. i tried picking up some classics to occupy my time, nothing was doing it for me. i ended up downloading puzzle quest challenge of warlords on xbla for $5. very very worth it. i played it for about 4 hours yesterday and am looking forward to playing it again tonight. simple fun that should keep me busy for a few days while i figure out what to play next while my classics malaise is still affecting me. fingers crossed for borderlands to be good next month. plus yeah, scribblenauts!

yeah, i don't remember any emotional connection to the original baldurs gate. the sequel had a tad for me, also in the form of imoen. bioware games have never actually tied me in emotionally. torment did though. ooh i got a new one: rescuing the captain in the flashback sniper missions of CoD 4: MW. Relying on him, and him relying on me, its the only time in a shooter where I genuinely felt connected with an npc (maybe dog in half life 2...) -
dude. WHERE DO YOU FIND THIS STUFF! L. O. ****ing. L

more on FF8 by the time the game is over and im watching the final cinematic... i feel a little heartbroken that its all over. plus holy crap, the scene where squall picks rinoa up and tries to carry her piggyback all the way to that wierd country. that scene really got to me too. actually that game has lots of sad and tender moments in it. its too bad the system was flawed and some of the plots holes were... big. -
yeah for sure that part was wicked lame. so was ultimecia in general, adon would have been a better villain. BUT... by the time the game is over and im watching the final cinematic... i dunno, i feel a little heartbroken that its all over. plus holy crap, the scene where squall picks rinoa up and tries to carry her piggyback all the way to that wierd country. that was some tenderness that got to me too.

dont fret purkake. i not only got your family guy joke. i laughed.

here is a thread to list and discuss sad and emotional moments in games. or just characters you've felt really attached to. I have TONS of these, but these are a few that just popped into my head during a different discussion. the most poignant was my horse in Shadow of the Colossus. I seriously almost shed a tear when the horse saved my life at the end... you know what im talking about if you've played it. one of the saddest moments in gaming in my opinion. i actually get emotionally connected to the cast of final fantasy 8 too. and Vivi in FF 9. Otocan. when his sister bites the bullet and the parrot says his name and he starts freaking out and crying. oh man, i felt so sorry for him. maybe its cause im close with my little sister or something, but i definitely remember that moment as being sad as all hell. that was MGS 2 i think... robo from chrono trigger. when he gets rejected by the other robots and they start kicking him while he lays on the ground crying "why are you doing this" dang that was heartbreaking too. modron from PS:T deionnarra from the same game the town of tristram. i know it seems wierd, but when i hear the tristram theme from diablo 1, it conjures both incredible feelings of nostalgia, and a feeling of loss knowing that the town is doomed from the start. my race of people in homeworld. damn, that game is epic and forlourn as all hell. i got hundreds more i'll post em later. for now, post yours and or discuss these!

i laughed so hard at purkakes cat picture response to volourn. oh man. so funny. volourn cracks me up almost as much as purkake but for totally different reasons! and yes, an rpg built entirely on the tropes (as if they all arent already) COULD be brilliant. id love to see the crazy monstrousity of a plotline that would arise from that. twists at every turn, one winged angels and big bads and my name is inigo montoyo's... it would be nonstop chaos

im mostly stoked about two player offline co op. my girlfriend loves those types of games, she still asks me about whether another BG dark alliance might ever come out

my 360 is quieter than my pc. its louder than my ps2, gamecube, dreamcast, sega, super nes, nes, ds, n64, and ps1. it is not loud enough to bother me. my pc sometimes is, but not enough to make me open it up again to replace the fans

Questions for SAWYER: Hi! here are questions for you! Please answer if you have time! 1. when playing an rpg generally what types of encounters do you find most fulfilling? 2. how do you feel about making games internally consistent? do you prefer fun over all else, or do you think its worth the time to show how the elements of the story and people work, ie: explaining water and food sources for towns etc 3. do you like combat to be fast and lethal, or more drawn out where a person can be shot dozens of times and keep living? why? any games you feel met your desires perfectly? 4. when you play fallout 3 do you spend more time exploring on your own, or doing quests? why? 5. last (for now) how do you feel generally about the current state of shooter/rpg hybrids (games like bioshock or fallout 3) compared to older games (like system shock 2 or deus ex)? 6. bonus question: what were some of your favorite games from the last couple years, and why?
