I love swear words, cussing and cursing. Nonetheless, I think fantasy RPGs work perfectly well with or without them. -

The problem with Bg2's pre-buffs was they became formulaic and mandatory. I can see why the PoE team wanted to change that, I just think some babies got thrown out with the bathwater. -

What a lot of arrogant nonsense. Mate, you aren't doing badly on the arrogance front yourself. Just a friendly nudge. -

Dude we've been having this conversation for two years. People have their own view on what was promised in the KS and what wasn't. Sorry I moved your cheese, but the POV that the game as-is fails to meet the initial pitch is hardly (a) controversial or (b) unreasonable. I don't even like 2E AD&D, upon which the IE games are based. I like them despite the ruleset. So the idea that PoE isn't BG2 - WAAAHHH! is a fallacy. The design team made a conscious decision to make a radically different crpg ruleset. For me, it was a self-indulgent hobby horse. There were a gazillion ways they could have delivered something different but fresh, for me it isn't. Deal with it, I'm genuinely not alone. You never know, I might grow to love this game *despite* the ruleset. Am looking forward to a Pathfinder CRPG. Would even be happy to see Sawyer on it, as I think he's good at working with existing rulesets. He did a great job on IWD2 with the 3E McGuyvering. I'm just not enjoying his homebrew system. It's like HAL is the dungeon-master (you need to do it this way, Daaaave). -

It's like you were promised a juicy steak, char-grilled, medium rare. Then you bite into it and realise it's a cleverly-camouflaged nut cutlet. -

Jesus how much do I hate the term 'save-scumming.' it's a perfectly rational thing to do. And if you don't want to do it, then don't. No biggie, but too many posts seem to concern how other people interact with a single-player experience. That and social justice wankery. -
Are you daft? I am a backer and avid gamer. So **** off. I am so sorry about mentioning that perhaps that candy cane you are sucking on is not so healthy and manufactured in the best country. You are clearly offended by this. A whole 29 posts and most of them seem to be about this bull. **** off right back at ya.

I find it interesting that a year or so ago a lot of folks on this page insisted RPG systems / mechanics needed to be 'intuitive' 'simple' and 'clean.' I was inclined to agree, more or less. Now PoE is released, they seem to have had a Damascene conversion. The underlying mechanics are counter-intuitive, dense and byzantine. Yet hordes of folks love it. Y'all the new grognards. Congrats.

Of course they've moved on from BG. The result sucks donkey balls, but they've moved on nonetheless. -

What have people found playing parties with four or less characters? I played most of the IE games on core rules with smaller parties and enjoyed the challenge, which given the way IE combat played out, was do-able. Does POE demand bigger parties due to the homing in on spell-casters and lack of kiting / disengagement penalties. Like I say, most of my experience has been low level in the release version and playing the Beta. -

I am quietly confident Obsidian will refine and tweak combat in future patches based on a wider pool of player feedback than existed in the Beta. Modders might also be able to create alternative combat tweaks. I don't want an IE / D&D clone by any stretch of the imagination, just a system that is redolent of it. -

Hmmm. Back to troll camp. I've seen some really good, old-school trolls on the forum recently which is apt for an old-school game. You ain't one of them which is ironic given there is in fact too much text. A D-minus.- 12 replies

Yea, prebuffing and getting to know your enemy weaknesses and how to overcome them was very fun in BG. Combat in PoE is very bland in comparison, general strategy - put tank upfront and make everyone else spam whatever ranged attacks\spells they have, most of them will do. And even with good gear and high levels I still feel underpowered in some combat situations, probably because the game still needs some rebalancing. you know a horde of fan-persons are about to show up and explain why you are wrong. I agree with you, BTW.
