RANDOM VIDEO GAME NEWS - FREE WHITE HOUSE MONTAGE
Lexx replied to Blarghagh's topic in Computer and Console
But isn't this exactly how the old Bard's Tale was? Personally didn't gave any money to that, as I never really played such games. -
This looks interesting:https://www.nexusmods.com/battletech/mods/25 Probably going to try this on my post-end savegame. /Edit: Ok, doesn't seem to work retroactively. If the difficulty increased already, there is no way back.

Well, I'm facepalming as well about the news, but then again, it's Bavaria....

Umm, has anyone here said that, or has this anything to do with the hand at matter? And for the record, Chris was always humble about his writing, and contrary to other "writers" in the industry, he never tried to write a novel (cough cough, Dragon Age books anyone), probably because he knows his place. The most he did is some novellas for Kickstarter games. And if you don't think that his writing is pretty good in terms of videogame writing, you don't know what are you talking about. So thank for your insight, it meant a lot.Actually, he did try to write a novel. It was one of the Wasteland 2 backer rewards. Back then they said the novel is shaping up great and it is so good that they wanted to make it bigger or something, which is why it got delayed. It hasn't been released till today if I remember right, and I'm guessing inXile hopes everyone forgot about it already. Other than that, he wrote a lot for comics and pen and paper games and stuff like that. So your point of him only writing for games is simply wrong. Wasn't there also a planescape book that was awful similar to all the stuff in planescape torment? Some folks claimed he took plenty inspiration from it years ago. Don't really remember the details about this, though, so might as well just have been BS.

But what does Battletech have to do with CRPGs? :> The game is not an RPG. Even the character creation is pretty much pointless. Except for your surname / callsign, nothing gets ever addressed anywhere in the game. Also there are no choice & consequences outside of the few random events that can happen while traveling - and their outcomes are just marginal at best as well.

Yes, the starting systems remain "low skull" for the most parts, but I haven't found anything < 3 skulls anymore now. Though, like I said, even 3 skulls missions will drop assault, or at least heavy mechs at you... it's just less of them. About default loadouts, yeah, just drop whatever you think you won't need. It looks complicated at first, but just remove everything down to the bare minimum and see how it goes. Usually you can't pick up enough heat sinks anyway to be able to alpha-strike all the time and still get some armor left on your mech. IMO it's better to shoot more often than harder. There is no point in picking large lasers and a couple mediums if you can only fire one of them per turn due to heat generation....
-
Meh, this setup for my Catapult usually gets me through a whole match. It's about 15 rounds of constant missile throwing. Only at the very end I tried my hands on a newly aquired Stalker. Worked good, but is too immobile for my taste. On the other hand, your LRM boat should sit far behind the frontline anyway. My Grasshopper is just wrecking everything. Either via aimed shots at vital bodyparts (anything that stores LRM ammo, etc), or when I get into the back of a mech... it's just game over. I could probably drop one or two heat sinks and add more small lasers or flame thrower... hmm.
-
Man, even my LRM boats have at least one laser. One thing about the endgame content: The game now has shifted to almost all 5+ skull missions wherever you go, which means you're mostly fighting assault mechs. But even the very few 3 skull mission that remain active will have you fight assault mechs.... just fewer of them (a lance of e.g. 3 mechs instead of 4 + reinforcements). This kinda sucks. There is no way for you to drop with only lights or lights and mediums at this point, as every other mech is far superior. Also it's pretty much always the same... an Orion here, a Highlander there, two Grasshoppers at once, every once in a while there will be a Cataphract.... I'd really wish for them not to add level scalling to every place, so you can go back to whatever stage you like to deal with right now. I mean, I've got enough money now anyway, so there's no point in farming low tiers for money or something. At worst, you'll do it to level up your new recruits. Damn, I wanted a full lance of laser Hunchbacks, but it takes ages to find them now.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of this development either. Really wish they would all just shut up and do this mudfight in private.

Checked out this SWAT TV show and... thought it was retarded. I can't exactly say what SWAT members do all day long, but I'm pretty sure the stuff they do in that episode is exactly *not* what they do. Running around, investigating cases, dealing with civilian mobs, etc. Not sure if I can sit through another episode.

How can you not have at least one small laser on any mech? Guess the developers never expected something like this to happen.
-
To be honest, I always thought he writes too many words. You can see it in most of his work. Take Cass / FNV as example. Compared to any other NPC in the game she has an abnormal amount of dialog. Or just the intro of Old World Blues... the dialog itself is great, but after 15 minutes of listening, I started to think boy, this could end now. I don't think the overall writing quality would suffer with a lower word count. That apparently PoE2 has double the word count of PoE1 is troubling me too, as even here I slowly started skimming and skipping stuff mid-game... Folks should stop trying to write books, because that never works out good anyway. Fallout 1 never needed 20 minute long dialog sequences. Heck, compared to recent "classic RPGs", this game has only very little text and yet it is loved by plenty people.

Nope, ai doesn't eject, which sucks. Some situations are so hopeless, it feels bad when the ai keeps on going. They should really add this to the game to make it feel more alive.
-
I've only played two or three defense missions. It's stressful, but manageable... depending on your mech setup. It's important to hit every enemy at least one or two times to attract them to your mechs. Also you have to stay closer to the enemy then, otherwise they switch target again back to the buildings.

Actually I found sensor lock to be more useful in late game than in early game (when you still need all the firepower of your mechs). Especially when I'm setting up a killzone and my mechs are waiting for the enemy to arrive, there is plenty time to use sensor lock and rain some LRMs or long range lasers. You got about 1 or 2 turns to weaken the armor. Works for me. It's especially useful once you see incoming vehicles which can't see you yet, but you want them gone ASAP. Other than that, I just finished the campaign. It's.. well, nothing to brag about. It works for what it is. The game is open-end after that, though, so you can keep on farming mechs, etc. I can really see them adding more content via DLCs. Would be great at least... you know, some bigger expansion packs. More events, more maps / terrains, some new story chains, etc... Worst they can do is mech / skin DLC. That would suck a lot. /Edit: Apparently I've played for about 62 hours, what the hell.

Obsidian putting out a statement to this would just draw even more attention. Honestly, outside a few nerd boards, nobody really cares. The big tl;dr that I personally take out of this is: Read every contract before you sign it and weight up if it'll be worth it in the long run.

Yeah, same here. Literally *every mission* I've played has this. It's why I had been so frustrated in the beginning. It didn't just happened sometimes, it happened always. Maybe random just wasn't with me, but that only underlines how bad it is. Even now in the high-level phase, there's *always* reinforcements. Only very rarely I get just one enemy lance. Heck, this is why I *never* go directly to the target marker anymore, but always either left or right, to then stumble over the "reinforcements", so I can take them out first. If this is intended behavior then it's just very unfun and should be reworked completely.
-
I used the Jagermech for a while as AC sniper, but honestly, I'm also happy about having it replaced with something else. It was good in the beginning, but with later, stronger mechs, you're just fkd. Man, I'm 42 hours in now and I love this game. It has a boatload of flaws, but it's still getting me all tied up. Hoping new patches will roll out soon. Also I can see myself buying some DLC for this.

It makes you sprint further and can increase your evasion. I find it a very useful skill on my mobile mechs. With 5 or 6 evasion, the enemy has a hard time getting you. Heh, my LRM boat is stationed so far away, the ai rarely attacks it at all. IMO they should send out some sprinter to try and get you.
-
Yeah, not much a fan of the large laser either. If I need range, I take the PPC or some auto cannon. My laser hunchback is equipped with 8 medium laser and it can trash just about anything, is reasonably fast and even though I rush him towards every enemy encounter, the mech barely takes any damage at all (too high evasion I guess). The ai should focus on my hunchback as primary target, but they just don't. Grave mistake.

I've put it on my SSD right away and the loading times are very ok. It's really the memory leak that causes all the problems. I'm curious if this will be fixed, as my experience with newer games is pretty much "pretend it doesn't exist" when it comes to optimization. PS: It seems like I am out of the LRM spam phase. This, including the reinforcements bug, caused most of my problems early on. Now that the mechs are bigger, slower and stronger, the focus has switched to sniping body parts. Pure "center core brute force" isn't very effective anymore.
-
Yeah, the K2s seem to appear first. I guess if you do one more story mission, the C1s should start showing up. Got a Highlander and a BattleMaster for my rooster now. I'm pretty much wrecking everything at this point. Still keeping my laser boat Hunchback, though, that thing is faster and precise. Pew, pew, pew, pew... body part is gone. :> Now how the hell do I get myself some Atlas...
-
Finally captured me a catapult. \o/ Took me hours with lots of save & load. Actually I only needed 2 parts, but naturally - as it is in such cases - I knocked out the pilot by accident and got the whole mech. To make up for it, though, the repair bill of my lance was > 1.5 million credits.... Sure I could have withdrawn and sooner or later I'd get enough parts, but I wanted it NOW and not later.

How do you feel about skimpy PC's? Do you play them, or avoid them?

You can't have more style than that. -

If I get the chance, my character always looks like Sean Connery as Ramirez from the movie Highlander.
