  1. Boo hates boobs. On the contrary, I just can't find a purpose for animated ones. @Orogun1: dude, those are filtered IMDB power search results, not a list of any sort. Its only purpose is for reference. I use it to see which highly (user) rated titles slipped under my radar, nothing more. All the Resident Evil movies are garbage, but fun to watch with friends. There is an animated one as well, though I can't remember the name. Its also crap. I found a list more akin to my taste: http://totalscifionline.com/features/3809-...t-sci-fi-movies Didn't know that they had made a Stalker movie based on the books Seen that one and its one of the better ones around. Still too much commercial stuff for my taste Stalker is one a handful of films that I rated 10 on my IMDB list. If you haven't watched it I suggest you run and get your copy. It has nothing to do with the book, except for borrowing a few names and concepts. Its also far superior to it. Since it was made by the director of the original Solaris, Tarkovsky its a slow and philosophical movie. Like he said to an objection from communist officials that the film "was too slow and dull in the beginning" - "The film is slow and dull so that all who walked in the wrong theater have time to leave". Apart from that its exceptionally beautiful and everything that's any good in the Stalker games is taken from it, though its not horror and there's no shooting or mutants.
  2. When the socialists were in power here during the Yugoslav years high schools had "pre-military training" just like any other class, consisting of physical and military exercises. Lovely thing, a pity it was dropped. The state today doesn't want militarily capable people, armed people and it does everything to eradicate physical violence, yet it still expects to find individuals to fight its wars. Ridiculous considering how much it has done to subdue the martial spirit in the average person.
  3. You people act as though there's any discernible difference between the policies of major UK parties.

  5. Umm there is quite a bit of nudity which serves no visible purpose in the plot.
  6. Yes, by the time the "twist" is revealed you already know or suspect all about it. Its also a bit too nonsensical for my tastes. Pity as I was really looking forward to it. I wasn't disappointed... but it was nothing exceptional.
  7. While I like both GitS films, its undeniable that they suffer from acute verbal diarrhea, that the characters are paper thin and that the actual plot is a simplistic thriller obscured by techno babble. Much like the Matrix, it implies philosophical depth where there is none. Nevertheless I enjoyed all of those films. That said, Innocence is quite good on an aesthetic level which is the only reason its included on my list. It and/or K-Pax might get dropped in favor of Children of Men after I watch that film again and make up my mind about it.
  8. Here comes the typical reaction. Someone makes a valid personal observation and the cries racist! racist! (or in these parts, nationalist! nationalist!) explode as if you have you had torched somebody. Its followed by this assurance that its all your "paranoia", that you're seeing things that aren't there etc. etc. And its always the same, no matter how moderate or polite you are. The end result of never being able to express an opinion without fear of backlash or branding is bound to have far reaching consequences.
  9. That list is flawed. How the heck does The Tuxedo - a jackie chan kungfu spy comedy - qualify as sci-fi? IMDB's filtering system is pretty good, but the occasional mistake does happen. Eg: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind isn't on the list at all.
  10. Donny Darko is hard to categorize. Since a large part of its fractured story deals with parallel universes, where else would you put it?
  11. Your only redemption for reminding me of Star Wars episode III (which I until now had successfully forgotten) was that the list also reminded me of Planet Terror I watched the first 3 episodes again, just to confirm they were the utter garbage I remember. I confirmed it. Planet Terror was sweet.
  12. Lemme jog your memory: IMDB tells us that there have been no less than 298 Sci Fi films in the last decade. Here they are: http://www.imdb.com/search/title?genres=sc...le_type=feature I've seen a hundred of those, or so IMDB says.
  13. Sometimes all a film has to be categorized as sci fi is aesthetics. Children of Men has nothing to do with science, actually its a drama heavily infused with religious allegory - yet for the lack of a better label it gets dumped into sci fi. Wall-E is successful on many levels, I'd not dismiss it so easily. Avatar is 100% pure commercial, no brains required, action adventure. Much the same as Terminator 2, Aliens or anything else Cameron makes. Regardless, its well made. I tried to balance the artistic, thoughtful side of sci fi cinema with the commercial "entertainment only" titles, even though I favor the former. If we were going to be strict about it only Moon and Sunshine would really be 100% sci fi.
  14. To make what's practically a silent sci fi film for children in this day and age and for it to be successful as well, is an endeavor few would dare contemplate. Since Pixar pulled it off there's nothing left to do but bow down to their ingenuity. UP blew me away even more, especially with the phenomenal first 20 mins.
  15. I guess it does follow an overused formula but Jeff Briges and Spacey did a really good job nonetheless. I liked the use of color and the sound effects. I'm still not sure if I'll include it when I write part 2. Yet another problem when you don't have clear cut masterpieces to choose from. Even the much vaunted Moon and Children of Men left me cold. Man from Earth was interesting, but its not really a fully realized feature film. Watched it today - great stuff. All very similar in style but still great.
  16. I agree. When it appeared I watched it at least 5 times, but with time I noticed the actual shallowness of its storyline. Seeing Dark City afterwards, which did many similarly, but better only reinforced this notion. I don't exactly see why Johnny Mnemonic, Flatliners, Dr Moreau and Independence Day are gems but I'll agree that Dark City, Gattaca and 12 Monkeys are pretty good. The 13th floor and Cube were interesting, and I haven't seen PI. I'd add Terminator 2, Jurassic Park, Ghost in the Shell, City of Lost Children, Total Recall, The Fifth Element, Galaxy Quest, Men in Black and Starship Troopers as notable additions. None of them however present what any of the aforementioned classics meant for the development of the genre. The Matrix is the only one with wide reaching consequences but purely in the visual sphere.
  17. Isn't that an important tenant of fascism? Its an important tenant of political thought since the dawn of man, so I don't see where you're going with this. Should people just allow themselves to be subjugated, especially if they have the power and capabilities to not be? No they shouldn't. But they should also be prepared to suffer the consequences of rebellion. I'm for both sides. It is the "right" of the state to try to establish order, just as it is the "right" of the people to try to define their position in the world However if you want freedom, earn it through sacrifice. The american people that rebelled against the British empire understood this. I just have no respect for gains made through a policy of appeasement. Enforced political correctness, and positive discrimination (which are policies of appeasement) is the worst sort of freedom because its given. IMO it breeds discontent, because: a) those who get it, get it without enough effort b) those on the other end (most often the majority) feel they're unfairly losing power and status You could just as easily see in this schoolyard nonsense a terror of a minority over the majority by manipulating the promised freedoms of the system. I suspect many (white) Americans will see it as such, and it must be realized that they aren't all ignorant rednecks without a right to voice their opinion. Failing to recognize this will result in a venomous atmosphere, that will probably end in violence.
  18. That's correct. Ridley Scott commented that sci fi was going the "way of the western" and he was most likely right. No truly prominent director has invested his talents into the sci fi genre for a while now. The only masterpiece in the last decade IMO Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is only sci fi because it uses an unexisting gimmick to explore relationships. Its barely, if at all science fiction. Now the films you mention are somewhat of a mix of pure commercial cinema (Terminator, SW, etc.) and the more artistic stuff (Clockwork Orange, Blade Runner). I tend to like the latter, with my favorites being 1. Blade Runner 2. Stalker 3. Solaris 4. Brazil 5. 2001 A Space Odyssey 6. Clockwork Orange 7. Alien I think its by these, artistic sort of "classics" that you can see the "vitality" of a genre and, that's the way it sorta affirms its value. But the last two decades in sci fi have no absolute classics. At best there is great stuff, but nothing to blow your mind. I'm of the opinion that the genre is petering out. Since it'll probably interest people, there is a very good top 1000 list http://www.theyshootpictures.com/gf1000.htm - made by prominent directors and critics. I extracted all the sci fi titles from the top 400: 4. 2001: A Space Odyssey 40. Blade Runner 69. Metropolis 90. A Clockwork Orange 104. Star Wars 112. Stalker 122. E.T. 135. La Jetee 139. Close Encounters of the Third Kind 163. Brazil 216. Alien 227. Solaris 259. The Terminator 274. The Empire Strikes Back 303. Aliens 347. Mad Max 2 361. Back to the Future It seems to support our theory as well.
  19. The hispanic students "taking offense" could also be seen as veiled threats, the kind of which institutions should not back down from? Coming from a country where schoolyard violence is not commonplace (mostly taking place over girls, arguments, due to alcohol - not due to dispute over symbols)I have no idea of what the likelihood of something actually happening in that school in the US is. From my perspective it seems that the likelihood of violence was exaggerated, but Hurlshot can easily tell us what that neighborhood is like. I agree it was mishandled by the people in charge. At the very least you will agree that its the symptom of a larger problem that is bound to worsen if it is repeatedly handled this way.
  20. Nordom: This issue no longer equals total logic.
  21. Explanation why the ones I have watched from that list weren't included: 1. District 9 - another case of sledgehammer subtlety in regards to politics. Do not like the simplistic portrayal of apartheid in the film. Such topics should be handled seriously or not at all. Did not like the actual storyline either. 2. I Robot - just another action movie starring Will Smith, no? 3. Signs didn't leave much impact on me for some reason. 4. Couldn't find the time to watch Solaris (2). I love the original. 5. Frequency is good. Dont think it has lasting value though. 6. The Final Cut and The Signal, I haven't seen. Both got under my radar in IMDB as I filter out all films that get under 6.5 in user ratings. Having limited time to watch films, I had to include some sort of filtering.
  22. It is, since the dystopian genre has been firmly incorporated into sci-fi (eg: A Clockwork Orange). I didn't put it, because it perverted the point of the comic which was Anarchism vs Fascism to the Bush administration, vs Liberalism. Alan Moore, was very outspoken against it for the same reason. I'm very sensitive to politics in film, believing that you can't be art and propaganda at the same time, since their goals are completely different. V for Vendetta had a bit too much modern day politics/propaganda for my tastes. Otherwise its a well made film.
  23. Me too. I would also put Equilibrium there. I found it a bit of a cheap 1984 knock off, with the worst fight scenes ever As in, everything taken from 1984 and Farenheit 451 was good, everything the filmmakers added on their own sucked.
  24. I'm somewhat surprised that its so highly rated. I didn't see anything but a fun, albeit visually cheap (and thus a bit ugly) space opera. It was passable. I'm a bit soft on Victorian visuals. You really think it should be included? (just asking, since it didn't really captivate me) It kinda completely ignored the point of the book and turned it into another save the world story. Couldn't really get past that.
  25. That bodes well for the future.
