Really? I would have thought that the success of games like Sins of a Solar Empire would have demonstrated that this is not always true, and, yes, that game actually does not use any copy protection. Sure, if you want the extra support and free downloads you need a CD/DVD key, but that's ok as the registration is completely voluntary.
