It heals 50% of the damage you take over something like 10 or 15 seconds. Example you have 300 endurance and start to take damage: 1.) you do nothing and take 300 endurance and die 2.) You activate unbending and take damage faster then you heal and die 3.) You activate unbending and take 300 damage spread out over the duration and you finish up with half of your endurance left. You effectively healed 150 endurance over a long duration 4.) You take 599 damage spread out over the duration precisely and you remain alive with one endurance. You effectively healed 299 endurance over a long duration. This would be the ultimate payoff but it pretty unrealistic. 5.) You take a better ability and have the paladin use Lay on Hands and have him heal you for more endurance over a shorter time and he can do it twice 6.) You save yourself the heartache and roll up a Paladin or a Monk. One big problem is that you don't know when you need to activate it and since it is per rest you'll hold off until it becomes a bad situation. At that point it runs the risk of healing too slowly and the damage can outpace the heal.

Deep wounds is not bad, it just happens to be better than the other choices available. I like it better than any one use per encounter attack buff and infinitely better than any per rest ability. Most of my Rogues are functioning retards with 4 intellect and deep wounds still damages long enough that as long as I don't miss two times in a row with my pike the poison never stops.

You don't need a priest either. A Paladin is the best single target heal in the game and brings a lot of other skills with them. A priest is great at buffs but you only need to buff big for three or so fights in the whole game and scrolls and potions will do the job fine. As others said if you want a Wizard primarily for CC Aloth will do as good a job as you need. If you replaced with a CC Cipher you would get to where you only rest to regain health. For the Monk I'd go for damage not CC. With a mere 3 intellect Force of Anguish will knock down for like 6-1/2 seconds. Monks are very durable and dish out big AoE with Torments and Lightning Strikes. In general I would not make any character with a low might, or low anything for that matter. In pure efficiency a super glass cannon with a super tank in front is great until the super glass cannon gets dropped and your tank can't do anything. I prefer tanks, more correctly frontline melee, that can do damage while surviving in melee and damage dealers that have some defenses. For synergy I like stacking bonuses like Paladin with defense aura, Chanter with enemy debuff and fire weapon, both improving a damaging Monk, a Rogue with a pike, a ranger and a Cipher. Or a tanky Chanter with the gun chant and a Pally with accuracy buffing a Wizard, Cipher, Ranger, Rogue SEAL team.

Skipping Companion Quests
KDubya replied to Anaeme's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
You need the story companions to get and do their quest lines. You don't need to have them with you at any other time though. If you know where and when their quests occur you can add in the story companion, do their quest and then send them back to the stronghold. With the rebalancing in 2.0 making all the stats more useful, and being able to level up from first level, I've found that the story companions are good enough as long as you wanted their base class on the team. I'll take Pallagrinna as the team Paladin instead of hiring a merc Paladin with a few stat points moved around. I mainly just hire a few mercs at level two to fill up the team and then replace with story companions as I find them. -
I like to avoid as much exp as I can at the start, I leave the traps and sneak through the next area in order to get to the Inn while still level two. This lets me hire the mercs and have them be 3000 experience points behind. If I get to level three and hire level twos they end up like 5000 exp behind. At low levels the under-leveled aspect of the merc is noticeable.

Cannot Decide on a class
KDubya replied to bhill1007's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Laspeakeasi has it right, the starting free skill levels make all the difference due to them saving you from buying the last most expensive skill levels. In the base game it doesn't matter much. You had 12 levels = 66 skill points, the highest check was 12 and you could find the gloves +2. I've never found the gloves yet so I like to not include them in the numbers. A Rogue with the right background gets you +3 mechanics. To get to level 12 you'd need 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9 = 45 points, leaving 21 points for stealth level 4, athletics level 3 and a few left over. A cipher/chanter/wizard would need 55 skill point to get the same mechanics level 12. This leaves only 11 points for your stealth and athletics. Anyone else needs all 66 skill points just for the mechanics. If you stopped at level ten mechanics you could open everything and just have to eat a few traps. Anyone could handle this for only 45 points and still be able to cover the required athletics and stealth. The expansion upped the ante and the next expansion will continue that trend. I can use my Paladin or Monk as the trap finder until I get the Devil, but from then on only a rogue will have enough skill points to keep up. Even then a few traps will be unlockable or even unseeable. -
So you admit that the most important thing you see in a person is their gender? No wonder you think equality equals preferential treatment. "I call this person a woman because I think she has a uterus and I've always made up my mind about what her role in society should be and I will treat her according to how I expect her to behave. If she dare defy my expectation i.e. demand same pay as men or have sex with whoever she wants she must be asking for preferential treatment. I can't allow that because I'm too narrow-minded to adapt my behavior to accommodate other people." News flash. We live in a world of preferential treatment. Men are treated preferably to women. Heterosexuals are treated preferably to gays. Sis-gender are treated preferably than trans-gendered. Stop pretending life is better than nursery school. In today's Victim society if you can't claim victim status you're SOL. I'm a white male so everyone can treat me badly since I can not be a victim since I don't happen to be homosexual or even dress up like a woman from time to time. The statistics used to show that women are paid less do NOT take into account that many women choose to leave the workforce for a period of years to raise their kids and also generally choose careers that allow for more time away from work in order to care for their families. If you limit the comparison to career ladder types who work 60+ hours per week in high pressure fields you'll see that the pay is comparable. When women start to choose to raise their families via a voice on the phone like many successful men do you'll see similar payscales. If someone does not want to bake you a cake just go to another baker, maybe even start a protest to inform others that the baker won't bake your cake and steer some business away. But why throw the power of the courts at them in order to crush them and drive them into bankruptcy? I'm surprised they weren't sent to re-education camps, they worked for Mao didn't they? Why is there a Black Congressional Caucus? Just imagine if there was a White Caucus. Why is La Raza and MEChA allowed on campus, and even has a member on the Supreme Court? When your motto is "for the race everything, for everyone else nothing" Again if they were a bunch of white people doing that they'd be in jail and called Nazis. Take president Obama, change his race and he never wins the election. People voted their guilt that has been instilled in them by popular culture for the last forty years. Senator Elizabeth Warren, AKA Fauxcahontas or Liawatha, pretended to be a Native American in order to enhance her career. She was found out to be a fraud and a liar and still won an election. Hillary Clinton is the Democrats front runner and her only accomplishment in life is that she is a woman and she did not divorce Bill Clinton. Cry me a river about how the evil white men are keeping everyone else down. In today's society victims have the power. Huh, is this for real.... Seriously I wouldn't even know how to address this level of ignorance. Newsflash, privilege is something you only notice when you don't have it. As far as poor white males (who by the way are the most privileged race on the planet) being victims is laughable. There are so many studies and articles by respected social scientists on these matters, really ignorance is no excuse anymore. Nice job , tell your indoctrinators that you have learned well. Step one - insult people who do not follow your dogma. No reason to think about what someone says when you can instead call them names. Step two - use the buzzwords of "privilege" as taught to you by your Marxist teachers Step three - invoke respected social studies and articles that echo your own group think. What's next start a petition to have me banned? I'm fortunate that my grandparents came to America, and that they taught me to have a work ethic. Everything I have I earned through hard work, perseverance and skill. Nobody gave it to me and I find your insinuation of me getting a free pass based on some mythical "white privilege" to be insulting and racist. If you fail in America the person you should blame is the loser you see in the mirror.

Wow, so what were bottlenecks like with (essentially) six melee? Or did you always try to kite enemies out of bottlenecks or something? At a doorway I'd try to stealth rush into the room. Kana, and Devil both had ranged weapons on switch so could do ranged if needed. Also both Monks had Flagellant's Path so after 3 wounds they could zip across the battlefield. Even when only one of the Monks could engage in the doorway it was perfect for Torment's Reach. The cone would hit a lot, and as fast and as hard hitting as it is it'd kill the crowd pretty quickly. Sagani was the only real soft target and she was always way in the back. With Stormcaller once that lightning storm procs its game over for the bad guys. Who heals in Your party and how? I don't know every class/characters yet so that's why my quesyion, wanne know diffrent variants. Pellagrinna heals with greater LoH. And Zahua has Tidefall that drains endurance and has the Shod in Faith boots. With heavy armor on most of the team plus running Zealous Endurance you don't take too much damage and it is spread out across all the team except for Sagani.

I liked doing the main quest until level nine, going to White March and upscaling the level there. Then I can grab Zahua and do whatever I want. Do some White March, go back and do some of Act III. Its harder to get to Devil but Zahua is easy. I'd say if you go to White March at level five or six its one thing, I can't see the reason to go there at level 8 and be over-leveled for both White March and the main game. I've never used an experience reducer mod so I don't know how it will affect your game.

2.02 GOG Manual Update Fixed
KDubya replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
I downloaded both of the new patches and went to run them. Both times I got the "update already installed ' message. So the patches are the same as they were. The big change is that if you buy and download the game now it starts off as version 2.01 and there is only one patch available that brings it up to 2.02. There are still a vanilla patch and a White March patch. -
First off WHY would you choose to play Iron Man and then cheat and save scum anyway???????? What is the point??? If you are going to reload if something bad happens don't play Iron Man. The Backers paid for the game, without them there would not be a PoE. That said I wish most had not all chosen to be Godlikes, having every other person glowing blue or being on fire sorts of ruins the setting. The big dragon fights can all be avoided and can all be solved with non violent dialogue which still gets you loot. I'd say that the Devs did a good job of making it possible to overcome the biggest fights without needing to fight.

For skills you want someone on the team to have max mechanics, they'll be the one that finds the traps, secret areas and opens the locks. You want everyone to have 3 Athletics, maybe go for 4 for everyone if you want to rest less. Maybe choose one on the team to run athletics up to 6 or so. Survival doesn't make much of a difference, a few points to buy the cheap skill levels is fine. Put the rest in lore for scroll use. 10 lore lets you use the highest level scrolls there are. No reason to go past ten. I think they most useful scrolls stop at level four and only require 8 lore. Stopping at 8 lore when the next level costs a bunch is a good idea with some of your team. The way the skill cost goes up with each level means that you want to get as many free skill levels at the start via culture and class. Paladins start with +2 lore, if you pick an origin that starts with +1 lore you'll have 3 lore at start. Your first lore skill costs one point, since you start with +2+1 = 3 you get to level 4 for only one point. The next point costs two and so on. The free skill levels at the start save you the real expensive levels later. Example getting to level 10 when you start with only one skill level is 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9 = 45 skill points to get to lore ten. Starting at level four (Paladin + Aristocrat or scholar) = 1+2+3+4+5+6 = 21 skill points to get to lore ten. Big savings in skill points when you only get six per level.

Those stats look OK to me, everything is reasonable and balanced. Pale Elves are a nice choice, was better when they could have beards but what can you do The culture would matter for role playing reasons only. If you were going for some sort of racial maximum in a stat then the choice would make a difference. For me if all else is equal I like to pick the culture that starts with the heavy brigandine Armor, think that is Valia. 10 DR at the start is huge and it looks nice as well. Lay on Hands is an awesome ability that scales with Might, Intellect and your level and is usable twice per encounter on anyone.. Flames of Devotion only helps with two attacks. It is nice, I usually get it at level five after I pick an aura at level three, but it is not near as useful as LoH.

You see, people like you is the reason why we should never censor any opinion, no matter how offensive or non-factual they may be. I can't wait to share this on Facebook and have a laugh at everything you said in there. So where am I factually incorrect? And where am I being offensive? You might wish the world were different but it is what it is. The bottom line is there are two types of people in the world, those who don't care about your problems and those that are glad that you have them. Your parents, or maybe your teachers, are probably to blame for telling you that you are a special little snowflake, that violence doesn't solve anything or some of the other liberal myths.

The pistol fires one shot and has to penetrate the targets DR just once. The blunderbuss fires six shots all of which can miss, graze, hit or crit independently and each has to penetrate the enemy DR. Here is an example: enemy has 0 DR Pistol does 22-30 damage with a 6 DR bypass. An average shot does 26 damage Blunderbuss does 6-9 damage with 4 DR bypass and fire six bullets. An average shot does 7.5 damage x 6 = 45 damage At enemy DR = 10 Pistol does 26-10 - - 6 = 22 damage Blunderbuss does 7.5 - 10 - -4 = 1.5 x6 = 9 damage Add in penetrating shot for -5 DR Pistol does 26-10- -6 - -5 = 26 damage Blunderbuss does 7.5- 10 - -4 - -5 = 6.5x6 = 39 damage PotD doesn't change which you'd want to use. It depends on how much DR the target has and how much DR penetration you have. That is why Lead Splitter is nice is because it has an extra 3 DR penetration. A Cipher with the DR drain power (I think its Body Attunement) with Penetrating shot and Lead Splitter can bypass 20 DR. Shooting someone in plate is the same as shooting someone naked

You see more men as CEOs because more men work in the high pressure fields that are required to get to that level. When everyone is working 60+ hours per week you need to do the same. When men pursue their careers to that extent they can still find a wife who'll raise the kids either full time stay at home or pursuing a less strenuous career which allows for some time with the kids. Women are further hampered by their more limited options for having a family life as well as a career. They'd have a harder time finding a Mr. Mom to stay at home or a husband who works in a field where there is ample free time available for a family. Throw in the issues of having the wife greatly out earning her husband and you have a recipe for a divorce or at least an unhappy partnership. Biology also works against women. A woman who wants her own family is either going to have to take time away from her career path or have her kids raised by strangers. Also you need to consider that you'd want to have your kids before you are forty. This is the age range where the future leaders separate themselves from the pack and rise to the top of a very competitive culture. Dropping out of the race pretty much takes you out of consideration. Also the mere chance that a woman might later choose to drop out in order to have kids is going to factor into the career decisions made by her superiors throughout her career. At a competency parity level, the difference between who gets the promotion and who doesn't is going to be influenced by who might leave to have kids and who won't. Unless there are artificial constraints like quotas involved. A man can have a first marriage where he did not see his family much but achieved great career success, get divorced, marry a much younger woman and then have another set of kids even if he is in his sixties. Older men gain character and distinction, older women just get old.

There is not an agro system. Enemies tend to attack that which is in front of them. If your frontline melee has good damage and accuracy enemies will usually not leave them and risk a disengagement attack. The enemy will hit the weakest member that they can reach though, so if your Wizards run up to hit the enemy, the enemy will turn and hit your Wizard. To avoid this using reach weapons like quarterstaffs or pikes are popular since you can stand behind your frontline melee and still hit the enemy. Another option is to buff up your deflection and DR via spells or wear heavy armor, or both. Interrupts delay an enemy action, they don't stop it. Your flails will attack at 20/20 frames base, I think it'd be 20/15 with padded, dual wield and your dex. So every 1.5 seconds you attack and an interrupt with your flail is 0.35 seconds. If you interrupted every attack you'd slow down the enemy by 23%. To get a lot you'll need really high perception and interrupting blows and even then you'll get to maybe a 50% chance against a foe with base resolve.

You need to remember that the thread you are opening here was made in April, which was like ten patches ago. The game now is a lot different than the one that the original thread participants were playing.

I didn't precise my question about weapon for palladins before, I had in mind POTD difficulty. How about survivability for Palladin as main TANK, WITHOUT SHIELD and no other strictly tank in party squad on POTD? Beside palladins, I supposed that every main(not off tank ofc) tank should have shield otherwise is hard perform on POTD? I only play PotD after my first game on Hard back a few months ago. I also pretty much stick to the story companions instead of hired mercs. My suggestions are based on PotD experience and from that experience I like big two handers on my frontline Paladins. Paladins have great defensive abilities so I augment their offensive use with talents and equipment. Likewise I like to make my Rogues 'tanky' and give them a reach weapon or a shield to help them survive in combat. In general I like a 'tanky' team. What is your team for PotD? One guy out front with or without a shield will not hold the enemy. I like to have three or four frontline combatants up front. They might be Paladins, Rogues, Monks, or Chanters. With my Juggernaut Monk (fists and plate) I had Zahua (TideFall and plate), Devil (Sabre and shield), Kana (axe and shield), Pellagrina (Strikes Hard and Pally shield) and Sagani (stormcaller). They went to White March at level nine, chose the upgraded difficulty option and cleared everything. No casters no priests, no problems. My Kind Wayfarer (TideFall and plate) team has Zahua (fists and plate), Pellagrinna (Estocs and plate), Kana (Pikes and plate), Sagani (Hold the wall) and Grieving Mother (Quarterstaff and hunting bow). No one has a shield, but I do start off with the two paladins hitting the other with reinforcing exhortation for a +25 deflection buff. In both games I have high DR and run the Paladin Zealous Endurance for hit >graze conversion. I still get hit since my deflection is around 60 on the monks and around 100 on the Paladin team but with 20+ DR grazes do around minimum damage and that is easy enough to take for a long time. I also have high defenses to avoid CC or at least push it into the graze level.

I did not catch that Firedorn was referencing the poem until I read this thread. I am glad that the Devs wrote Firedorn in to poke fun at the whole perpetually offended crowd. Nobody is special and people need to go to Home Depot, buy a bag of cement and harden the eff up.

I also prefer fists for a Monk. That said a Monk will still be better than a Fighter with both using Estocs. With my Monk run I used fists and had Zahua use TideFall just cause no one else was using it. He did great with it. On that run my two monks were the frontline with Pellagrina so I liked the heavier plate for the extra DR and used Zealous Endurance as well. If I had a others establishing the frontline and could use the Monk as a flanker then lighter armor or even those robes that get that wizard spell on crit would boost the damage a lot. In plate with swift strikes I think it is 20/20 frames adjusted to 20/21 and in robes it'd be 20/14 or 17% faster. With regards to the engagements with my Monk team - Zahua, Pellagrina, Sagani, Devil, and Kana, no one had any extra engagements and I never thought at any time 'boy, wish I had some additional engagements'. Once the two Monks started zipping across the field with flagellant's it was just mass chaos with the enemy running after the monks and then eating the return flagellant's and then a few Torments just for fun.
