Sure you can. It's part of the game. It's part of the appeal. It's part of the fun. In general, you want the 'gameplay' (and let's not get into a definition war over that) to come out tops, of course. But it's not a golden rule. There's nothing wrong with having a few games that decide to prioritise other things.
-
A fullscreen of a trailer would in no way be anywhere near an accurate representation of in-game graphics, though. :/ At least I can see what you mean though, it's not like you have anything else to go by.
-
You're making value judgments and artifical dichotomies already, though. You're already defining 'fun' in a way that excludes complex narratives or symbolic flaff, punitive difficulty or even extreme realism. I don't want to buy and play Modern Warfare 2 because it's not going to be fun for me, not because it's "stupid". If I don't buy a game because it's too easy, hand-holdy, simple or repetitive, it wouldn't be because of those elements in and of themselves, it'll be because those things make the game not fun. Essentially you're already setting up the rules of the game - art is not fun, simple fast explodey stuff is fun - then constructing a strawman of the art-loving fun-hating connoisseur elite snob, then presenting your argument. This isn't me attacking you or calling you bigoted or something, but again, it's no surprise that you reach the conclusion you do, you're esentially not giving any other conclusion a chance. Numbers don't make me spell everything out in excruciating detail, I'll reserve that for when I study...

*shrug* I got over this a while ago. Basically, Calax, why do you insist on thinking of dichotomies? Your argument, deliberately or inadvertently, adopts the very worst of the artificial categories and arguments that have developed over time. Art or No Art, Art or Fun, Smart or Stupid, you're putting all these dichotomies into the mix and it's no wonder your conclusion is what it is - I mean, in a battle of pretentious jerkoffs and fun-loving realists who are you gonna pick? It just polarises the argument until a resolution is impossible. Games are a medium which are capable of a wide range of things. So by all means we should view with encouragement and optimism any effort to take a particular vision of games, and then develop it to perfection, as long as that effort doesn't kill others. The kind of arguments you employ simply create a judgmental and fractious landscape where you can't defend your position, you just get pigeonholed into pretentious wank or a buttonmashing moron. That's not an attack, since they are very prevalent arguments in the field... just making the point.

Where's the fooling? Nobody is saying AP looks like Crysis 2, it's a total strawman.

I'm actually interested about this, can you tell me what things make you think it looks old/crap? I ask because I look at it and think "oh it doesn't look the best out there, but it looks alright". But then, honestly, 2006 graphics (Oblivion) were pretty good IMO, so I probably have low standards... In any case there *are* a lot of people out there who think "hey old graphics" so I'm curious.

Not Related to AP per say; Why does everyone hate DRM?
Tigranes replied to ltolman's topic in Computer and Console
I think this is really interesting guys, because this sort of shows how people have different levels / types of understanding with DRM and shows how some other people might approach it. Anyway, to answer ltolman's queries directly; -> People use computers in a huge variety of wildly different ways, that you really don't even think about until you see it for yourself. I've seen people do things with computers I didn't even know were possible, or people who have made such a massive mess of their computers and think that's how it's meant to be. There are people who reformat every 6 months, people who have 3 or 4 computers, people who are on the move, people who rent a computer, people who love going back to play 10 year old games. I'm actually firing up Diablo 2 again, and Blizzard lets you re-download the game if you still have the cdkey, and they removed all forms of DRM with their late patch. You only have to go through headaches with 1 or 2 games to understand people who wish that their game was just theirs without all sorts of crazy crap on it. -> In the case of Alpha Protocol, what you say is right. In many other cases, if you reformat your hard drive, you still don't get your activations back. Sometimes you get screwed and lose activations permanently because you didnt keep track of them. Then you have to... call customer support? Maybe? -> Steam has an offline mode, but even if it applied to Steam, that wouldn't make it any better. You don't have to go to the third world to find slow internet or intermittent connections, I live in New Zealand. And as you say, servers have hiccups - a totally unnecessary bother. I wouldn't buy an Ubisoft game because then I couldn't, say, play on the move with my laptop, play if my internet kicks out (a fairly regular occurrence), and because there's no good reason for me to have to be online. -
Gothic is a big game and a well known franchise, even if it isn't as 'massive' as Oblivion or Mass Effect. It doesn't matter, to be honest. If you sell enough for the franchise to go on and the developers to get backing, that's all you want, as a fan. Anyway, can't say it's a big deal. Dialogue wheel, dialogue tree. As long as it suits the game and doesn't compromise quality.

Just saw the video, the AI is unbelievable. He shoots at the first guy who is on his knees, and the second guy, right next to him, instantly lobs a grenade. Then his animation sets at 'standing' and he does nothing for about a second until he's been hit by Mike too, THEN he pulls out his gun. The third guy up top gets Mike with his first shot for a whopping total of 6 armour, then misses twice, though he's clearly aiming carefully. Assuming it's on easy you still take way too little damage, and the people are stupid. Maybe the AI is stupider on Easy? On positive notes, I thought Mike VA was fine. He's pretty normal - he really seems like a real life guy rather than the more 'theatrical' voices you get in films and games. The graphics looked good, too. I actually like the 'leathery' Unreal 3 look and the lighting is great. Also I think we got a confirmation that time does pass whiel you do minigames, you coudl hear the cry of the guard looking for Mike as he did the last minigame (4 routes).

*shrug* even though my computer hates it and I'd never use it, I appreciate what Steam does and think it's a good thing overall. I just don't get why you'd force retail copies to use steam.
-
Grinding won't be a big part of the game like it is in, say, Dragon Age - because you know, you can't just say "Mike here are 5 dungeons full of terrorists you can loot for cash". I imagine there are a lot of things to do within hubs though, and since you can visit them in any order, you should be able to go back and forth some/most of the time.

I think it's maybe easy to become defensive about the whole comparison business when you follow the game for a while - you start to hear about the comparisons at every opportunity, then some people just use it to judge AP by ME's standards - which isn't the fault of Obsid or Bio. In the end, I hope that the game is so good, the silly comparisons are over with and we can just talk about AP.

Mine's with Blank, I'll post it soon. -

In other words, Extreme Shepard? -
In the space of a year or so the whole DRM mess has really gotten worse. Another game I'll have to forget about...
-
It was always the most likely outcome, I'd have been very surprised to see Brown remain standing.
-
No, at this stage it's pretty likely the game as a whole will have poor AI.
-
I'll watch later, but more dumb AI? Geez.
-
Context and intention means nothing to you, does it? Just dogma. Anyway, I give up, because the thread has been won by:
-
That's a blatantly hyperbolic misrepresentation of what happened in the school in the original news story. Seriously, this isn't about flags. It's about some idiot kids who decided to piss other people off, and got told not to.
-
What the heck? Why do you need to put up both flags? The only people that would appease are oversensitive flag-freaks.
-
Idiot students do stupid crap to provocate people. Sensible people get rid of them. Media goes OMG OUR COUNTRY IN DANGER. The end. WoD life is not a Battle of Ideologies and an Arena of Symbols, all you're doing is tramping all over context and common sense.

Deadly, I think Krezack's willing to be more reasonable now that he has the full facts about AP DRM. Don't restart the war.

*shrug* I hate invasive DRM, Ubisoft isn't getting a cent from me. Said that a million times. But as far as I see it this particular DRM has tried to accommodate customers, so I'll give it a chance. Maybe we enjoy picking holes in other people's arguments too much these days, but there's a difference between case-by-case and hypocrisy. Anyway, if you think any online activation is bad enough for a no-buy, again, fair enough, your call.
