I stayed up longer than my girlfriend last night and didn't want to wake her up with the light, so I went into the bedroom and tried to climb into bed in pitch blackness. Long story short, I hit my leg on something pretty hard and now my leg hurts like hell. It's not swollen though so I don't think anything is seriously wrong.

Ah good, because my only source was a horribly anti-GG article that claimed GG was given the right to simply roll over and make any changes they wanted, which seemed very unlike Wikipedia to do. -

Wish I Was Here, Zach Braff's crowd-funded spiritual successor to his succesful arthouse film The Garden State. A lot of it was a retread of that movie, but not bad. If you liked The Garden State, you will probably like this. If you thought it was a pretentious piece of garbage, then you'll feel the same way about this one.

So nobody else hear anything about the anti-GG Wiki editors getting banned from editing the page? Is twitter nonsense really all we still care about? -
Settle down, guys. Obsidian's house, Obsidian's rules. It's not about political correctness, it's about local correctness. Obsidian's games are rated for maturity, but their board is not and Obsidian wants to keep it PG friendly because of that. This is not The Chive or the Codex, this board reflects on Obsidian and as such they want to keep it clean. They do not have to cater to all of your desires. Malc - I don't run WoT, none of my business. I weighed in on the discussion with a +1 after other mods stated they were unsure of how appropriate the thread was but that's where my involvement ends. It's been a source of discussion amongst mods since before I was one. This thread has been straddling the line for a long time and it was finally decided it was too far on the other side of that line. I really don't appreciate the witchhunt mentality here - nobody reported or objected to that specific thread (and Hurlshot never mentioned any of his objections to us) so stop hunting for a scapegoat to burn in effigy, as tempting as that may be. The decision falls squarely as a united decision by the mods (who are volunteers, I'd like to point out) and Obsidian employees. Sarex' remark about spring cleaning isn't far off the mark, though the timing is coincidental. I'm not really supposed to talk about what goes on behind the scenes so I may be out of line here, but we feel the vibe on the boards has become somewhat more hostile than it was and certainly not very welcoming to new members (the PoE forums are especially prone to flamewars) and complaints from members, both new and old, AND developers confirmed it. We believe a certain loosening of standards and too loosely interpreted guidelines are the cause (if you check the actual rules, you'll see they are pretty ambiguous and we've been using them about as loosely as we can to allow for the most free discussions that Obsidian will allow), so we'll be tightening things up slightly. I'd like to bring attention to 213374U's post about having a sandbox at all. Message boards and comment sections are being removed all over the internet - don't think this option hasn't come up for Obsidian. We'd like to get back to it being civil over risking it get more toxic and suffering that fate. We really like this community, so that's definitely something we want to avoid. What does this really mean for you guys? Not much. Threads that turn hostile or toxic may get pruned slightly quicker and such. You've seen pretty much the biggest change in moderator policy in action now.

Nonek, Cheong is the Nazi. Chu is the Jeopardy candidate. So what's going on with the Wiki situation? I've heard rumors that anti-GG editors are getting banned. -
You give 4chan far more credit than it deserves. While it's made it's mark like a great many other sites, it's hardly shaped much of anything 'for ages', or was or is an 'enormous factor in why internet culture is what it is now.' It's where a bunch of mostly immature people hang out. It's like the nerd emo kid table in the jr high cafeteria on a large scale. And yea.. for the people who are sitting at that table day after day, it's been memorable, perhaps even life shaping, but for the vast majority that make up the rest out there 4chan is either something totally irrelevant to them or they hope the people sitting at that table 'grow out of it'. It seems the guy who started it and runs it finally did to an extent. Good for him, but other than that, so what or who cares? Maybe I do give it more credit than it deserves, but that's not why. If I were to stay in your analogy, I never sat at the table. I've never been a member of a chan board and very rarely visited, possibly less than a dozen times in the decade it's been up.

Seriously wtf, girl seems like a sociopath. To be honest I'm amazed you guys are surprised GG is treating her "harshly" and frowning upon the site. Based on evidence from past endeavours she's been involved with, there's every reason to have skepticism with her goals and intentions. I'm not really surprised, more annoyed. I'm skeptical (cautiously optimistic doesn't translate to forgiveness) but skeptical isn't the same thing as "actively trying to dig up dirt or take it down". Let it lie - there are more important things to focus on than Quinn. What's the point of making a huge stink about "literally, who?" if you're going to keep focusing on it? Before it was the lunatic fringe elements focusing on specific personalities, but it's grown into a significant portion. It's disheartening. -

Sounds like they may be grasping at straws to me. -
You consider the Obsidian board comparative with the chans, Volo? Care to elaborate on that? Genuinely interested here.
-
numbers added by Gromnir for convenience. point 1-- is not something we see as positive... and clear your notion o' "ages" is different than ours. point 2-- to quote vol, "no." point 3-- uh, the nyt "unmasked" scientology in the 1990s, and scientology has has been kinda the brunt o' jokes everywhere save for hollywood for a very long time. heck, fallout 2 included the hubologists as a pretty obvious parody o' scientology. *shrug* HA! Good Fun! - Trust me, I would never state chan and meme culture is a positive either. If "for good or ill" was too ambiguous for you, I refer to it as a wretched hive of scum and villainy earlier on - it being a negative doesn't make it any less true. Also, I do believe I am substantially younger than you so that makes sense. - Um, yes? Chans are responsible for/implicated in a bunch of freedom of information and anonymous abuse scandals, most recent of which would be that well-publicized leak of a lot of celebrities' private photo collections. If it doesn't frame the debate, you'll have to forgive me for thinking so as the media is constantly reporting on them. - That's true, the ridiculousness of their beliefs has been unmasked before (Xenu etc.), but 4Chan's project Chanology is mostly responsible for exposing (or at the very least the spread of information regarding) their sheer viciousness and corruption, their dogged legal pursuit of dissent and censorship ruining many lives and threats of violence as well as the forced labour and (child) abuse that goes on inside their "ranks". I feel scientology's current status as a laughing stock is too charitable as it severely understates the horrid filth that it actually is. Edited because my sentence structure suffers when I have sleep deprivation.

I was under the impression that the malware warnings were false flags by some of those too entrenched GGers since I recall reading some of them claim they reported the site as an "attack page" out of spite. -
Either way, they needlessly derailed this thread because of an irrelevant connection. If 4chan decided to censor some other topic, the same exodus to 8chan would likely have happened (seeing as 8chan also predates GG). Chan culture is all about (ab)using freedom of speech and people didn't leave because GG was censored, they left because censorship was happening at all. 4chan's impact and its sudden quick decline is a lot more relevant to internet culture than GG could ever hope to be.
-
Really? 4Chan has been huge for over a decade, has caused endless problems, shaped internet meme culture for ages, frames the debate on online anonymity and has been responsible for much of the unmasking of Scientology and all you guys are getting from this is GamerGate? For good or ill, 4chan is an enormous factor in why internet culture is what it is now. Maybe I shouldn't have mentioned it's barely relevant connection to GamerGate which I only brought up because of KP's chan-speak reference because people didn't understand a stupid nickname for another site. Talk about tunnel vision. It's not KP that made this thread about GamerGate, it's you guys. For people avoiding the subject you sure are quick to focus on it. "I stay away from it... unless I really, really want to talk about it".

Fighter: The information on the website seems effective against the harassers of anti-GG too. I don't know how they actively will "help" online abuse victims though, but it states it's not retaliation so I'm cautiously optimistic. 'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt despite misgivings about past behaviour (by which I mean things such as the shutting down of TFYC, and not any allegations of adultery as my problem with that was with Nathan Grayson and not her, she can sleep with whoever the hell she wants as far as I'm concerned) because unlike the false flags by Wu and Sarkeesian, Quinn actually did receive a lot of abuse and at this point I'm sure she's got a good idea about how to stop it. KaineParker: Honeypot? As in trying to identify harassers IP addresses for... what exactly? Can you elaborate? Either way, I've spent far too much time reading about that website today when it's pretty straightforward and we have a pretty large upheaval going on in games journalism right now. I still want to know why some ex-Escapist writers imply GG is responsible for their removal since as far as I know none of the Defy Media websites were on GamerGate's boycott goals. GG on Twitter and KotakuInAction seemed much more interested in that website and trying to target it than it did actual news in games journalism, so I think the entrenchment has gone too far and GamerGate has lost its meaning. I don't think I'll be participating in the hashtag or KIA anymore because of that and try to talk about ethics outside of it (like TB, who very rarely uses the hashtag). Before when I said the majority of GamerGate cared about ethics in journalism rather than taking specific targets down, I meant it and also I was correct when I said it. Don't think either still apply. Of course, maybe some game journalist will go "Gamers are terrorists" again or something and piss me off into coming back in, but my attention has been wavering for a while now and despite some of the media narrative claiming otherwise, between all these games sites restructuring I'm pretty sure GG has made it's point. Looking forward to following some GamerGate proponents slow slide into media watchdog status using GG as momentum, but otherwise the only truly interesting thing to come out of it in the last month was the journalist whose girlfriend worked for Ubisoft and that was resolved pretty quickly (showing how effective GamerGate has been in raising awareness about ethics despite claims that it was about misogyny). With BasedGamer on the way, more people with actual clout taking GG seriously, the scoring system being on its way out effectively neutering metacritic and removing most of the journalists influence over actual game development, and Gawker bleeding cash out of their orifices, I'm pretty satisfied and I think GG has run it's course for me, personally and I'm really just tired of it. Quick aside, The Escapist's new Editor in Chief: Yeah, cautiously optimistic. -

Rumor is false, Movie Bob is still at the Escapist. I don't really care, he's a massive jerk but he hasn't been guilty of any ethics violations other than being a massive jerk. Since he's not a games journalist his opinion on GG is irrelevant to me. I like the new Escapist EiC. I too would prefer a more positive attitude on the internet. Also, why are so many GGers upset at LW's attempt to create a support system for abuse victims? I don't think it's going to do anything but if it does, hey, great, more people with knowledge about how to prevent or deal with online abuse. I understand there's some consternation about statements that they wouldn't help GG people, but I couldn't actually find them. So far it's my view that hey, one of them is actually doing something useful this time, so I've got no truck with it. -
It's a reference to 8chan, a similar website run by developer Hotwheels (named such after his wheelchair) that has come into some popularity recently in regards to the GamerGate controversy, specifically that discussion of said controversy was banned at 4chan, breaking the infamous 4chan rule of "we only remove things that are against the law" which angered a lot of 4chan members who then left for 8chan. Either way, while I respect both sites' right to exist and the benefit of having a venue for anonymous posting (both as a way to blow off steam or to come to terms with real life denial issues such as closeted genderqueer people) I think both sites are generally filled to the brim with pure awful and I'd rather not go to either one.

It's basically how the second term was won. Mitt Romney was simply the mormon John Kerry, neither really had the charisma to upset an incumbent, even one rocking super low approval ratings. I think that in this day and age, every president from history would face low approval ratings. People have become more cynical and more entitled at the same time and anything that isn't giving them exactly what they want is the end of the world. It's not the president, it's the people.

A couple of nobodies on both sides, but mostly some of the twitter remarks by some of the people who were laid off imply GG had something to do with it and/or benefits from it.
