Yeah, the outrage here is the way Ubisoft shot themselves in the foot and then just continued to saw off the leg. But hey, it's easier to just say "women should just shut the f**** up", so here we are. I'm not saying in any way, shape, or form that is what you have been saying, Calax; but the general message has been distorted in order to just simply rag on them females. http://tmi.kotaku.com/ubisoft-refused-to-talk-to-me-about-women-1590289504 I think my issues with this entire thing are sort of exemplified in the above. The guy went in there and deliberately tried to stir some stuff during a PR event. They're stirring the hype machine to bring in readers (as kotaku is known to do) and then you do stuff like your thread title "For men only" which is a deliberate jab at the "sexism" in the game that we haven't even seen yet. AC is actually a pretty good series for good female characters, and yet because of the one question and, shall we say, questionable response, the only thing everyone thinks about it is "Hey! they're deliberately leaving out women!" leading to a lynching. And you're telling me the issue isn't that there's issues relating to gender equity, but instead that it's because "Ubisoft lied!". *Looks at thread title again* Uh... huh....

The only game that I've, so far, seen get any guff is GTA V. I saw a few reviews go "and that's kinda bad" to the portrayal of women within Watch_Dogs, but nothing on the scale of the feminist nuclear explosion that's happened over Assassins Creed. Seriously, if you don't care about watch_dogs look at the above and tell me you don't think that it deserves this feminist hoopla much more than Unity. Hell I'm willing to bet one of the only reasons that Unity gets so much press is because it doesn't require you to play the game to get offended.

Except that the reason it's a controversy is only becasue the guys said "we didn't have time to animate a female character" and everyone blew up saying that "Well you had time to animate a MALE character! Rabble rabble rabble!". If they'd said nothing you'd probably be looking at everyone going "Wow, that thar assassins creed game looks mighty fine!" That's a completely ignorant way of looking at the situation. I'm sorry. It may be, but my point is that you don't have the same level of outrage when a GTA game has the only female characters be entirely twofaced and/or brutally murdered (GTA V... well the other option is bat**** crazy), Or when Watch_dogs has the female characters be without agency of their own (instead having "big brother" save them... hell one is even put in the refrigerator and nobody blinked), Or just get totally left out of the game (Battlefield:Hardline). So where's the social justice warriors for those games? And why does assassins creed earn the ire of the internet? I can only assume because it was directly pointed out in an interview that "We tried but ran out of time" rather than just flat out ignoring the issue.

I think the point is that as the number of players/playable characters increases, the omission becomes more noticeable and jarring. In single-protagonist titles it's all rather arbitrary, but with four-player co-op such as in the new AC game, variety becomes more appreciated. By the time you get to larger scale multiplayer games like Unreal Tourney it's an expected feature, and attempting anything else in an MMO would be a ludicrous concept. Females make up 48% of the user base. Ubisoft continuing to unapologetically chase the old demographic is incredibly insulting. http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2014/06/12/assassins-creed-unity-characters/#more-212773 I am glad you raised this issue Bryy. I thinks its a disgrace. If you read the link I provided you'll see how Ubisoft has been caught out when they said "having female characters is too much work"" Please see my response to this above. Although we can't truely know everything because, hey, we're not on the dev teams for any of this.

I think it's not the lack of them so much as the fact the guy said "Well we were about to but then we just didn't have time to finish the model/animations/whatever" which got everyone up in arms. I think that means that they were going to create a fully unique character model with unique animations and such as a woman, but ran out of time to do her, but many people took it to be "generic model and animations with a female skin" and thus started this whole ruckus we're seeing.

That rainbow six trailer is to scripted for me to be excited

Out of question, what did Miyazaki do? I generally don't pay attention to game directors. I'm guessing Resident Weevil but who knows. Also Far Cry 4 is looking quite nice.

Sony is tonight which means more fun stuffs. the IGN panels are actually kinda fun too because they're just four people shooting the breeze about what we just saw. Napped through the Ubisoft confrence... was it as crazy as before?

And I got into the Hardline Beta
-
At least we get to try it before buying

Why is every E3 video now with the developers going "this is how we make the game and why it's special" rather than just letting the gameplay/trailer speak for itself? Mirrors Edge is perfect... Why are we talking about her design instead of being awesome parkour? Same with Battlefront or that Criterion game...

I hope EA comes out with something to actually talk about for us. Simes 4 and UFC (Featuring Bruce Lee) isn't much. Did like the pieces of ME that we saw though.
-
So, I missed the MS conference.. but EA is gonna be showing up soon. OOOOOOHHH DA:O gameplay... Ok, that's WoW with less buttons.

Right now I'm a little pissed off at my school because They turned me down for study abroad... but still sent me (individually) an Email saying "hey hey hey! welcome back from Italy! Please go online and fill out your return paperwork!" For what I can assume is a systematic sadistic rubbing-salt-in-the-wounds that this school seems to delight in doing to me.

So, an aquaintence is thinking of doing a start up company that's basically a version of the one I'm with that goes to another city (In this case, Iowa City). He keeps prodding me saying that he's gonna drag me into it as manager because I know how to set up everything (which I honestly halfway know), and may be offering me a job in the next few weeks. But I'm not sure if I'd even want to take it given that I've still got about 6 months of classes to go before I have a degree.

I felt Wolverine was reduced to a plot device. Any time he actually gets to do something it's relate exposition to the other characters and get taken out of the action, whether by his opponent, or by having temporal seizures. He spent pretty much every action sequence incapacitated. This is basically how I feel. Although they did sort of gimp themselves with the adamantium not being built into him yet. Meant he couldn't do as much as they may have desired. I was a bit annoyed that we didn't get Wanda in the show, or either of the Summers children given that all of them show up in one form or another during the process. The disappearance of Havoc was probably the biggest one, but I guess if they had him along the climax would have been moot.

One of the wierd things about the game is it's almost like the game is trying to make me make judgement calls on targets. 90% of your enemies will be viciously evil in some way... pedophiles, escaped cons, beat the system crooks, hackers in their own right... watch peep shows and post voyeur videos (yes really) And then there's bank victims who just missed their loan payments, have tested positive for herpes, and found out they have leukemia. I feel like the devs went ahead and said "well, if you're gonna be a ****, realize who you're doing it to! But if you're shooting anyone it's A-ok!"

Can I just say that the whole "other guy has loved one in his power so you have to do what he says" trope is utterly stupid and getting way to cliche. Also: Sleeping Dogs Watch_dogs WoW ME3 Payday2 Titanfall uhh..... Arkham Origins Injustice.

I've managed to evade the cops three times total... The cops are way to tenacious for this game to be fun for car chases... and mercs are even worse.
-
Annoying thing about watchdogs... It doesn't matter what you want, you WILL be forced into multiplayer.

Zooming into Watch_Dogs

You wound me sir! Besides, I run to rad scorpions anyway.

Work and classes and more work.... Maybe should fit sleep in there somewhere but... I suppose sleeping at work wouldn't be ok (I tend to sit at the desk at the airport for quite a while).
