Stand by to be patronised, NKKK. I've been to some wild and wooly places. Not so wild they don't have cops. But wild enough for those cops to take bribes like I take strolls. They can shoot someone and it won't even get written up. They get drunk and run people over and get embarrassed at work by people poking fun at them. Talk to someone who has immigrated to your country and ask them about the cops. Remembering that the cops often harass them and scare them, and demand things and so on. ...their kids on the other hand...

I can see entirely the court's point on Engblom vs. Carey. After all State militias were far more similar to the Framers' notion of what the US Army was! Ownership of the property should not affect the tenant's right to treat it as their home. I would have thought. On reflection I can see Nepenthe's broader point that these are armed servants of the State, and that this was the threat the Framers intended to guard against. However, I remain firm in my objection that the Constitution needs to be updated with reviews. Indeed I would say the complexity of modern society and technology positively demands a comprehensive review. A love of liberty is just as precious today as ever it was, but the threats to it have evolved far beyond the wit of those poor old buggers in powdered wigs.

Found out a friend of mine is going to get evicted. Literally ran over to see him and agreed to pay his rent arrears (1 month) as a gift. The whole time I was thinking I should be more rational. It's not like I've got money coming out the wazoo. But then I thought "But then I'd be the kind of **** who lets his mates become homeless." Then I realised that actually it's less risky paying his rent than letting him kip at mine and possibly winding up on the couch for months. Can't work out if this makes me an arsehole after all... He hasn't said yes, yet, because he wants to sort it himself. But if he does we agreed he could help me out with some DIY to 'pay' it back.

You mean, they couldn't ban the polis because they didn't know about them? Seems to me that your interpretation could lead to almost anything being declared unconstitutional. There would be technogeddon mayhem. I really think the USA needs to grow up and stop treating the Constitution like a holy unalterable text. Quite apart from any pragmatic argument, the great holy constitution SAYS it's supposed to be amended.

But it is! Not in that example it ain't. If you want to add an amendment for this thing which has been invented since the constitution was written - cops - then crack on. That's what amendments are for.

I'm not saying it doesn't need constant ****ing watching, Malc. You don't become a saint just by putting on a blue suit. We only have good police because we punished the s*** out of a lot of bad ones. I think criminal sentencing for everyone has come slightly detached from reality, personally. Nepenthe could maybe explain why. It's probably a function of a bunch of factors. But I also think that it's a bit of realpolitik to recognise that a stable state is always going to gives its guardians the benefit of the doubt. Because come crunch, they ask the same favour in reverse. Just look at Egypt.

Even the story you link to says it prohibits the quartering of soldiers. When the Third Amendment was written the quartering of troops among civilians was a serious problem. Troops were frequently convicts, in ill health, drunk, rapacious etc etc. They might end up living with you years. Having one suddenly dropped on you was a cause for unrest and so forth. Hence it seems the constitution took care to allay fears about it. However, at the time of the amendment Robert Peel - inventor of the the entire concept of police - hadn't even been born. To the best of my knowledge the only paid permanent officers of the peace in the World were the Bow Street Runners. And there were only six of them. So I find it exceptionally hard to believe the constitution was talking about police. I presume you know the story about the boy crying wolf?

Slight aside, but the whole alienware thing seems like a nerd win to me. Some guys decide to make rigs which just appeal to nerds, with proper performance and no crap. They do well, get bought out by a bigger company (presumably for millions) and are hopefully now gaming on a beach somewhere surrounded by dusky maidens. OK, maybe most of that story is just me fantasising.

I think this review encapsulates all the small crap choices which the design team went for. You can almost hear the requirements focus groups. "Oh, but it has to look cool, and uncluttered. The windows button has too much stuff in it." So they strip it out, and lo and behold they've just annoyed everyone who wasn't at the meeting trying to sound edgy, who just want to be able to admin their bloody machine.

As a profession policing brutalises people ... the policemen and women themselves. They see the absolute worst in people every single day and get a lot of hostility. In some countries - notably the USA - they face a very real threat of being murdered over next to nothing by lunatics, conspiracy theorists, drug dealers, you name it. One of my school friends joined the Met many years ago, and I barely recognise him. None of this excuses police brutality. But as Hurlshot says, before you use a single video or incident to condemn the cops think about all what happens when they do overstep. Are they punished? That is the true mark of how healthy a nation's policing is. Also consider how rare such incidents are, and how far they arise from local conditions and bad management.
