Chair makes an interesting point about partly wanting to talk about evil so we can externalise it. I also liked his point about it being a fictionalised scenario. However, I'm struggling to understand how this drive to grapple with reality meshes with what I feel is an overly academic view of the criminal acts at issue. I look at this criminal and despite being trained to take an analytical perspective I am not analytical. I am revolted. I fear, despise, and hate that anyone would want to treat an innocent in the way he planned to do. I am still more revolted by the thought that such crimes actually are committed and recorded for the enjoyment of other people like this. Yes I externalise it. I reject it utterly. I want to expunge it from creation. I might care to understand why he did this. I might listen carefully and attentively to him. But the only reason I would do so would be to expunge it more speedily and thoroughly. I view the overly 'understanding' man as one plummeting to his doom from a rooftop, studying the patterns of the cobblestones below. No doubt you feel that this is an overly emotional reaction. But I think we all can see how public policy is dominated by a bureaucratic indifference to real suffering, and an obsession with minutiae. We don't do nearly enough to tackle evil, and far too much fiddle-faddling with trivia.

Almost a quarter of men 'admit to rape in parts of Asia'

In the mood for oxtail at the moment. From different butchers, hoping it's as good. Cooking it with lentils and onion, pepper salt. Maybe some sage. Keep it simple. Ribsticking comfort food. Tried out guinness 'malta' drink. I like the b vitamin hit, and it's not so sweet as other malts I've had. Probably buy again, if the mood is on me.

I had a dream last night where I lead a commando unit of bikini babes, and Han Solo, to infiltrate and disrupt a conference of high level stormtrooper generals. My favourite detail was - apart from the bikinis - that a passing stormtrooper officer spotted my uniform wasn't right, and rather than raise the alarm(which is what would happen in the films) he demanded to know who my officer was so he could be punished for not checking my kit. Obviously I couldn't think of any officers' names, but while I was thinking he complimented me on not ratting out my boss! Took me to stores, and issued me with the right stuff. I felt almost guilty about being a rebel. If I hadn't woken up I believe I'd have defected with all my bikini babes. Anyway, my dream was better than yours, Ros.

Dude had evil thoughts, and actions inasmuch as he actually kinda tried to procure a kid but is not himself inherently evil. (Is probably horribly broken.) Justice system should stick him in a psych ward and try to fix him. Maybe he can't be fixed in which case leave him there, but hey, maybe he can. A tin opener with solder stuck in the gears is horribly broken. A man who wants to abduct, rape, and eat children is evil. The distinction is not merely semantic. Evil implies a reaction far beyond broken. My question to you is what you would have done if he maintained it was only one child he wanted to do it to, and having done so his curiosity was satisfied.

My housemate walked in on me playing Empire Total War and said "Feeling contemplative?" I expressed surprise in the affirmative. To which he replied "I know your mood by what game you are playing. When you are feeling positive, and deep in thought, you like to shoot Frenchmen."

If we follow this train of thought a bit, aren't then all women's clothing just glorified boob prisons? Thanks a lot, man. The next chance I get I'll be finagling those little hooks, and the song from The Great Escape is going to be going through my head.- 526 replies

I should imagine it's already a problem, given how thin she is. *pause* I was fine when I first saw them, and now we've been talking about them, I can't stop looking. LOL EDIT: It's like they're in the middle of escaping. There's a sense of unfinished drama.- 526 replies

I've just had the most heartbreaking "I come not to praise caesar, but to bury him" letter from an ex I've been corresponding with, saying she can't handle being in touch and she's not going to talk to me again. Now I can't focus on work.

Your definition, as expressed above, seems to indicate that you don't really think any of the people on the forum are real, or have any significance at all. It seems to me you could have an equally effective, and substantially more efficient, exchange of views with your left foot. -

Tried to make jam, but used too much pear and apple as filler, and now have several jars of (delicious) fruit compote. Change to normal procedure was to heat the cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg in a separate non-stick pan before use. This 'warms/activates' (according to my source) the spices. It certainly made the result tasty. I have been eating it on toast anyway, but think t would be best over ice-cream or with a baked custard.

Beyond good and evil
Walsingham replied to Auxilius's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
The OP raises an interesting point which we have looked at before on the forum. I think Obsidian does a consistently good job of questioning culturally subjective rights and wrongs. I'd highlight New Vegas, and the entire New California Republic for that role. However, I reject utterly the notion that morality is transigent and flexible, when it comes to real values and standards. The man who does otherwise is not a man I'd care to depend on. Or indeed have much to do with at all. I've been giving it some thought and the analogy which springs to mind is the question of the loaded gun. If I walk into a room and find a gun we can debate whether it is loaded or unloaded. We can even check. But the correct way to _behave_ is to treat all guns as if they are loaded. Just so, we can debate the morality of abducting and eating children, but the correct response is to reject and prosecute anyone who does it.
