The Eden House - The dark half I'm so looking forward to April when they release their album. A "superband" consisting of members of two of my favourite bands that could replace Massive Attack for being the most paralyzing experience on my playlist. This particular song however is, while lushly produced, not quite satisfying yet. Gotta listen some more
  3. Well, I like to be in charge of what's happening on my PC, but many of your points do sound rather Microsoft-y, actually, like 'the user's too stupid, we'll automate it' Anyway, this here interests me a lot: what's the cleanest way of setting up such a machine? I'm going to have a similar setup soon, with the exception of Vista, which will be Win 7.

D_N: Pretty! Hope he / she won't get hip problems, neigbours had to have several dogs put down in sequence. Shryke: You little do-good-er you
  5. You reap what you sow. Or possibly, you see what you want to see That's true for Benchmark interpretation in general anyway...

I got up a while ago, enjoyed a good breakfast and decided to have a day off today Read some more or less interesting stuff on various boards, among them this here: That actually sounds good - you're speaking openly. You may, from your perspective, also have some point here and there, but this: This little paragraph is rather silly - pumping iron? Wth is that good for? Better some real sports... And career and "future" - where's the constructive thing in that Future's nothing because if you concentrate on it as future, you'll always work for some undisclosed time to come and never be happy with your present. Nothing wrong with goals however, but career is one of the most worthless, empty goals there are in my opinion. Musopticon: Hm, one semester more or less may not be that important, but failing uni altogether is likely a waste
  7. Not only that, it's still very driver dependent. Also, I've yet to see image quality comparisons, like: is AA and AF implemented properly. The problem also is OpenGL - not many games appear on that base anymore, and the new standard (3.0) turned out rather disappointing, from what I hear.

  10. Yeah, I'm not happy with the new AVG either. Not small and unobstrusive anymore.
  11. It's mainly a file system test, and even there 64bit versions are not always slower. They are faster in the one computation test.

Horrorpops - Heading for the disco Trying so hard to be old school But goddamned Poison was never cool I don't get why anyone would wanna dress up as an eighties whore
  13. Actually, I doubt it would have much influence, because I suppose Windows is 'clever' enough to do the whole indexing and pre-caching stuff only when otherwise idle.
  14. Well, it seems a bit unfair to benchmark a game on an emulator against the real thing...
  15. I was with a friend (that introduced me to BG which forced me to buy a PC) playing Halflife right after he first bought it. So he's playing it and already quite anxious what will happen, looks down a drain - a facehugger jumps in his face, he tosses the mouse into the air (throwing his arms up and forgetting to let go of the mouse) and jumps/falls off his chair. That was awesome and I could hide my own shock from the facehugger behind -ing
  16. Did they wait until indexing etc. that keeps the HD busy for quite some time after installing Vista / 7 finished? Apparently not Otherwise, I quite like the test, also the "mouseklicks necessary for default installation" was nice to see. D_N: Gaming would be rather difficult to compare. 7 drivers are certainly not optimized yet, DX games can't be run under Linux etc.
  17. Argh... TV Tropes is mean - been wasting my time there for significant parts of an hour
  18. You don't know much about hardware, do you. Actually, the X4 940 is about as fast as an Q9550, at about the same price (around here). The i7 940 is faster in many scenarios. And yeah, overclocking's a must with this processor, as it's really easy to do and it should work at stock voltage and with stock cooler at around 3.4GHz Better cooling instantly rewards with better overclock results, but beware of high temperatures, because AMD set the max. (external) temperature before downclocking to 62
  19. Well then, let's hope that

    No.
  24. That game might use more memory than others you tried, or it might be more demanding for the gpu - to me, it still looks like a dying card. You could try to verify if it is the gpu by running furmark, but if it really is dying, this could be its death sentence. To check if it's the memory, you could try Fallout with the highres texture pack or something like that. If it turns out that it's just rainbow six, all the better, if not: The cooler the card, the longer it lives. So you'd maximize its life expectancy by not starting any games and let the fan blow stronger.
  25. Ugly. Looks like it is dying (probably the memory, if it's dedicated) - make backups and hope it will stay alive but don't count on it. Is it a mobile geforce of the 9 or 8 series btw? They have problems with high temperatures due to some weak soldering material. Using a tool to increase fan speed to keep it cooler could save it in that case.
