Overreaction theater!

These hypothetical arguments make up the definition of being an apologist. Level-scaling and cooldowns have always sucked RPGs. Hypothetical arguments to the contrary is nothing but blind hope that Obsidian will somehow invent a completely new design that will blow away everyone. Betting on mechanics that are already solid seems a much wiser choice with a low budget. -

Old school RPGs do not contain level-scaling* and cooldown-mechanics. It is the worst kind of straw man to answer legitimate arguments raised against this by calling it temper tantrums. Remember that cool Kickstarter video that begins with citing all the IE games as inspiration? For each step this project takes with its combat system, it's looking less and less like the IE games. That is a problem - a problem with marketing and a problem with substance. I am sure as hell going to voice my opinion on it - not because I'm throwing a ****ing temper tantrum, but because I hope to save a game that could have revitalized a genre, instead of doing just another Dragon Age. And, FYI, I actually liked Dragon Age, but it's no where near as good as the IE games. Level scaling and cooldown mechanics were a big part of the reason for that. * Well, a very few of them do, and it sucks there, too -
Rarity of magic items?
Grone replied to TrashMan's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Poll is pretty ****ty. The optimal dream-land scenario for me is tons of slots - boots, headgear, rings, armor, weapons, earrings, tattoos, nose-hair-hangings. However as far as the optimal drop-rate goes, I'd like something approaching rare. -
So, I can't seem to find the Media Patches anywhere anymore. They're not on GeForce's website anymore. Anyone know where I can find them?

I got it from the Damn. Precisely. AFAIR (this is more than a month again), he told me he'd leave and told me to not push it to far when I asked him to help fight the legion. As I already said in the linked topic, I have gone back to the Dam. No new dialogue options are available. As I said, the quest asks me to talk to Regis. When I do, it completes that objective, doesn't add a new one, and then "hangs." If I assassinate Papa Khan, the For the Republic Quest doesn't complete, and Oh My Papa! fails. And I can understand why (the community-handling). It works in 90% of the cases. But when I directly adress the tech support with this kindda problem, one would at least expect a reply of some sort. I've sent mail to Bethesda too, by the way, no answer there, though that's not a surprise. Thanks a bunch for your help... I guess I can try that console thing if there's really nothing else to do...

More than a month ago, I made a thread about technical difficulties with Fallout: New Vegas, which I love, on the New Vegas forums. Though people attempted to be helpful, I have not yet gotten a solution, my game is broken, and I am unable to continue playing. The thread is here: http://forums.bethsoft.com/index.php?/topi...-help-spoilers/ My questions is: Can it really be true, that I, as a customer, get no official help when a game I've bought and paid for is broken? I have spend loads of time looking in to the problem myself, but still have no progressed. I am at the point where I need official help, but none is granted even though I e-mailed Obsidian staff. Please, could someone take the time to answer either why this is so or alternatively how I solve my problem?

I'm on a Win7 64bit high end PC. After installing 1.10 patch, Alpha Protocol crashes seconds after I press play. I've tried re-installing, and it didn't help. Could be that I'm installing the wrong version - I'm in Denmark and I'm using the US install. However, the EU version won't install (says it can't patch AP.exe).

Can you create an entirely new face?
Grone replied to Brako's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
What? Face generation one of the most important parts of an RPG? Since when, Oblivion? Some of the best RPGs ever made - Baldur's Gate and Fallout for example - had nothing of the sort except choosing colors. Indeed, a game sometimes hailed as the best RPG ever, Planescape: Torment, sets you up with a completely pre-generated guy. Same goes for Deus Ex, which should be like the ideal for a game like AP. Playing with dolls is not what makes an RPG. Smart customization of stats (numbers, skill-checks, combat) and choices&consequences in the story is what makes an RPG. As long as that is solid in AP, I don't care that I'm not able to play with my Thornton-doll. -
Alpha Protocol has been delayed.
Grone replied to Matthew Rorie's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
Thanks for the update. This really is the best thing; we don't want another KotORII-incident. So I'm sticking with the pre-order. Seems like the guys at SEGA are somewhat good guys. Here's hoping for a polished and fantastic game! -
Game is now officially delayed
Grone replied to kreese12's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
Well, not all crappy. Sure, the story sucked, but it had the best implementation of tabletop system in any game, ever. And the gameplay was very polished. I was bored with it to, but it if you sit down with it, shut your ears to the story, and just think of it as a dungeon crawl, it can be quite entertaining. -
I actually disagree with the current rage against QTEs. Zero Punctuation isn't a God, even he can be wrong. On most occations, sure, QTEs suck balls, but if they're used as an integrated part of the game, I like them. I like Fahrenheit alot, but I hated the last half of the story. I think the QTE-choice was perfect for that game though.

This. Definately this. However with minor correction that the silence is a negative. -
Equality by default is bad. Equality in the sense of avoiding neglecting or disregarding options because of genderpreference is good. Meaning: To make precisely 50 games with female protagonists and 50 games with male, because you want equality, is bad. Likewise is making 100 games with both. Making sure gender is not in the mind of the developers when they create the game, but just choose whatever seems best for the game's story, is good. This is because true equality between the sexes isn't when every board in every company has 50% male and 50% female members. True equality will arise only when you disregard gender as having anything to do with ability. Disregarding gender when it comes to telling a story though, is not something to aim for. In Alpha Protocol, they wanted to tell the story of an agent, with a Bond-like focus on suaveness as well as a ping-pong humor between the protagonists and the women in the game. This is not degrading in itself in the slightest, because its surrealism is in itself a parody on this kind of thinking in reality - just like the James Bond-flicks. You can't make a male protagonist in the a Joan of Arc-type story either. Genders matter, and they matter a very great deal in storytelling. So no arbitrary sex-equality in my games thank you. Let's do whatever is best for the game and the story. As for not being able to roleplay: Well, that says more about your limits as a roleplayer, than the games limit in choice of protagonists. I can roleplay girls just fine. Its a matter of personal taste and ability if you have problems roleplaying the other sex - and that's not something Obsidian should care about. I do agree it would be very interesting to see an RPG with only a female protagonist however. Especially one that didn't show off her cleavage more than her personality. RPGs are rather lacking in this reagard, and I do understand if some of you girls feel left out and disregarded in this matter. There is much reason to fight the genderbattle on the platform that is video games, but my point is: Going into that fight stating every game should host female AND male protagonists is wrong. The problem lies a whole other place; namely with the fact that very few companies even consider the option of having female protagonists - and if they do, the mainly do so because sex sells. I'm looking at you, Lara. In short: The harm towards Obsidian is misdirected. The harm is legitimate, but it should be directed elsewhere. - Casper (who is an active member of the feminist group in his political party, by the way)

So, Is this game delayed or not?
Grone replied to TheWatcher's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
Unless they announce a firm release date, everyone will still be at the forums saying: "It isn't coming out Oct 09? When then?" which in their mind is the same as what we're seeing now. Even if they announce a delay, people won't say: "Thanks for letting us know," but instead: "Waaah! It's delayed? **** you!" I'm not taking sides, I'm just saying: why should they? Companies should be taking lessons from Blizzard on this issue... Just don't ever announce release dates! -
So, Is this game delayed or not?
Grone replied to TheWatcher's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
Because, at least at my local store, it's free, and the store'll call you when the game is released? I rarely follow release dates online, because I know the shop will phone me, when the game is released. -
This makes you think of DVD movie cases. Reviewer writes: "[FILM] will NEVER be regarded as fantastic, it is pure ****." And thus, on the DVD box, you see: "Fantastic!" - New York Times.

A solid? No such thing, my man. However it would be nice to just have a "before christmas" type statement.
