A house rule for one time skill checks (D&D 3.5)
Same here Sometimes i create dramatic encounter moments, or make a monster so hard that they can defeat it only at the last moment, with their last strenght. I never 'fudge the results' to kill someone or similar, just to get more out of some events.

links to free-ware games!
I suggest the Laxius Power series. Good story.

Free anti virus program
Free updates will end in the new year. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> What? How dare they take away my free updates!? EDIT: Are they actually stopping the free updates? I can't find anything to that effect. Version 7.1 is being discontinued, but there is still version 7.5 <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Oh right... ok then ignore what I said. For some reason I was under the impression 7.5 would not be free. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> He's a witch! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Not a warlock?

A house rule for one time skill checks (D&D 3.5)
Because even if the player is unskilled in speech, it can be that his character is a master of diplomacy, because he isn't good in talking he will have a harder time than simply just roll the dice, but still he will have achance to succeed. I want to encourage roleplay and dialogues, not to banish people who simply can't do it better. Anyone has a chance to accomplish anything. This way its easier for roleplayers, taugher for those people who are not so good in it/or are beginners, but definetly it isn't impossible. I think that's a great idea for a PnP session and I've considered implementing a similar (though less refined) method for the module dialogue. For example, if the player has acquired some additional information about the conversation subject, a high INT/WIS score or simply chooses the right lines at the right time the original skill check DC can be lowered a bit. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yep, I use that too, but not just that. Let's say you want something from a towns mayor. Chance to succeed is DC25: 15 (average check) + 5 (very bad mood) + 3 (the something is hard to do) + 2 (the mayor is human and the person who asks him is a half-orc) The players look around in the town, they get the knowledge that the mayor is upset about something. They roleplay a dialouge with the innkeeper of the Empty Keg, and they now know why: His daugther was kidnaped. Now they can: a. find his daughter and hope for his aid then b. go to him and offer their aid and then go to rescue her c. find his daughter and kidnap her for themselves d. go to the mayor and lie about having his girl and demand help for the 'something' e. do something else the easiest variable change is when they decide to aid without asking the mayor about it, if they succeed, the 'bad mood' DC becomes a 'good mood' DC , thus the overall DC is 15, even as the task isn't easy to accomplish (the mayor will tryto help if posssible) It's not so easy if they asked the mayor before helping his daughter, because they now know the mayor is evil, and that the kidnaper is actually the stepbrother of the girl, and they are in love... Anyway, DC changes and roleplay modifiers together create a very realistic and enjoyable game session.

A house rule for one time skill checks (D&D 3.5)
I use a "roleplaying modifier", we roleplay a conversation till the decision of opinion comes for the player/NPC. After the dialogue ended, I give a skill modifier for the player depending on how he talked, what he said, whom he talked to, and in what manners. Modifier ranges from -10 to +10, usual is +/- 5. Even an unbathed orc can be persuative if what he says is important, true, ect. With this, I get the player to be better roleplayers, and they try to have REAL conversations instead that they do "I wanna now archieve that the pirate captain gives up, i roll a diplomacy skill check". Also, don't forget that average DC is 15, but it modifies via circumstances (on race, mood, ect.), most DC are by me because of those 20-25, sometimes even higher.

New Mass Effect Footage
Hold on. Seriously, how often do dialogue options available in RPGs vary so subtly and lead to different conclusions that you absolutely need to read full text before selecting one? 1. Good sir, can you tell me whence came the young maiden from the field? 2. Could I trouble you for the distance to the village of Thimbleflam, farmer? 3. If you don't start answering my questions, I'm going to dash your head upon these rocks and hurl your bloody corpse into the river! 4. Would it be inappropriate if I were to ask you to MAKE OUT WITH ME?! 5. I was wondering if you could answer some other questions for me, old man. translates to: 1. Where did the maiden come from? 2. How far to the village? 3. Cooperate, or else. 4. Kisseys? 5. Other questions. Obviously, the phrases I chose aren't serious, but what are you missing here that's going to inform your choices? Unless people are playing games I haven't seen where you have several different choices for intimidating people or several different ways to ask where the maiden in the field came from -- that also lead to distinctly different conclusions, I have to add -- what is preventing you from making a choice? If you want to intimidate the subject, you're going to pick the intimidation line. While the specific words you speak might not be what you had in mind, you almost always run into that same issue with full text responses. For example, if the option were expliclity, "If you don't start answering my questions, I'm going to dash your head upon these rocks and hurl your bloody corpse into the river!" that would probably still be your only intimidation choice. I think the real issue is how much of Shepherd's personality is loaded into the lines -- not whether you see full text or condensed phrases. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It was hard to decide, but I didn't quote 95% of this, and put it into my sig...it would have been simply too big! (w00t) LOL!

Search for the Word of Chaos!
It's the pre-AD&D ruleset?!?11!! ) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Nada D&D at all, the world has its own pnp system I said most news are old, and also the trailers are. Graphs are more advanced since then. This is no copy of BG or something, its about a book created in the late '80-s what has created the basics of its own world and history, the book became a trilogy, then many other hungarian writers also expanded the world, i can say the journey of Skandar Graun (the half-orc) will not end in this game, if the players become interested in it, the possibilities are huge, even if we just remake the books into stories, but we don't do just that: we include alternate possibilities to allow nonlinear gameplay, and expand the main story with brand new quests and options. (In the original book 'Word of Chaos' nearly all the characters died, now YOU can have the luck/skill to get all your companions out of the adventure alive -if you want to-) Nope, in his socks (stupid question, stupid answer ) :D

What are you playing now?
This is just like ruining a detective story with saying who's the killer, or to say in a horror movie who is the only person who survives.

What are you playing now?
Of course it's a spoiler if she hasn't played it. Let's step through the logic: Darque hasn't played game, someone tells her something about the game, now the surprise (and possibly her enjoyment) is spoiled. Hence: spoiler. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I think the situation is compounded by the fact that she said "Hey, I'm playing NWN at the moment." It's one thing to talk about it in an open discussion and given its age, I wouldn't lose much sleep (any sleep) if someone mentioned it without hiding it in a spoiler tag. But when someone says "Hey I'm playing the game," it's a bit bizarre to just go out and state straight up what the end of the game is like. Even if she already has been spoiled from previous discussions. If someone where to pick up Ultima VII ( a 13 year old game now ), I wouldn't just blab the ending suddenly to them. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> One thing everyone knows (even if they don't know who the heck she is) is that aeris dies <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I play Ultima V right now, and play the series in the correct order. Thanks to share what 'everyone' knows, dammit! <_<

Does Obsidian intend to make an RPG like FO?
And Arcanum, Bloodlines, ect... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Uh, weren't you the Chosen one in Arcanum? And didn't a hobbit...err...gnome give you a ring to start your adventure? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> No, it was purely coincidence your char was there, he wasn't any kind of 'chosen' one, and you didn't have to do the gnomes bidding at all.

Search for the Word of Chaos!
Let's say 'grey eminence'. I have 3 friends in the developer team and im many times by them, making suggestions, some of them became part of the game, oh and i get sometimes beer or pizza for them too. Yes it will be translated atleast into german and english, maybe even more but those aren't completed yet. Thanks, i knock on wood while i say it seems no extra problems will happen before release You can be sure it will have quite different flora/fauna than you are used to, the world has its own unique gods, plants, animals, and sentient races (of course you will see already known ones, like a cow or an elf ) The towns are quite big, and yes you can walk around (except if the town guard is after you, or if you loose your legs ) 1. I had to get a new computer for NWN2, but WoC worked well on my former PC above medium quality settings, nearly the maximum. 2. Yes I have 3. Yes there is, but it hasn't been upgraded since '05 doh, when people had some time they worked on the game, and not on the side, there are the wallpapers, but all other info there is VERY old. 4. I'm not sure how i should understand this, but I try to answer: you gain access to dialouge options regarding your former actions, your 'alignment', the skill in speech, bartering, whit whom you speak, the memory of people who you met before (the react to you differently if you do something that was good/bad for them), and whet members you have in your team with you. (I hope i didn't forget anything)

Search for the Word of Chaos!
Now that's a good question: Caldwell's first book is named 'Word of Chaos', and that was the moment of the creation of the 'World of Chaos', we still don't know what the name should be, I suggested 'Word' simply because 'World' sounds now like an mmo, and it isn't one. It is both turn based and real time, you decide how you want to play it (but i think turn based is better for it) it is mostly in a 'look from above and a bit behind' view, like most other games, but it can be that t here will be an option for 1st person before it gets released.
