The All Things Political Thread (One thread to rule them all and in the darkness bind them)
Didn’t know That. The only reason I knew his name at all actually is from a book I read about a year ago. Hockey Night in Dixie. It’s not about the NHL but the Atlanta flames and their minor-league affiliates are mentioned. The book is more about minor-league hockey in the southern states. I didn’t really follow hockey until the Florida panthers came into existence. So most of what I know of its history is books.

I’m surprised he never got another gig in the NHL. I believe the flames were his only coaching appearance.

No kidding? That is pretty cool.

Apparently so. I guess the notion of winning not just being the most important thing but the ONLY thing is a modern idea. I won’t even mention the idea that it’s fundamentally and morally wrong not to allow them to play. We already know they didn’t think so at the time.

OK, I know this is getting a little OT but what the heck. It's a video game forum and OOTP is my favorite game. Plus this might annoy AFKKP so here it goes! I wanted to take over the worst team in MLB history and see if I can turn it around. That team, of course, was the Washington Senators. First in war, first in peace, last in the American League. This was the version that became the Twins, not the one that became the Rangers. That one was bad but wasn't that bad. Well, wasn't having much luck because the Sens were strapped for cash in game just like in real life. That is until OOTP 18 included real historical minor leagues including the Negro Leagues. Now the way it works in game is the "color barrier" is in game until 1947 when Robinson goes to the Dodgers and everyone is fair game after. BUT, a player controlled team can break the barrier at any time. Well then, here I am in 1934 with a team that won just 41 games the previous season despite my best efforts. I went player shopping. The 1935 Sens had Josh Gibson, Buck Leonard, Satchel Paige AND Judy Johnson. And won 89 games a an AL pennant. People talk about how smart Branch Rickey was in signing Robinson. Can you imagine if Josh Gibson had gotten a chance? What the heck took so long?

As far as crackers that’s not the definition I’ve always understood it to mean. The definition I got from a book I read on the minor leagues is the term was a slang for a slave overseer.

LOL now THAT is funny! Might not go over so well though. But hey there have been teams named "Flames" in town.

It sounds like the Atlanta Braves are also re-branding. They want to remove the racist imagery so now they will just be called Braves. Oh c'mon. It was funny when it was the Washington Bullets and it's funny now. In all seriousness it sounds like that is in the works. If they choose any other name other than Hammers they are doing it wrong. A tip of the cap to Hank Aaron. Cleveland has had a ton of names before Indians. They could go with any of those.

Speaking of politics and baseball. Out of the Park Baseball 22 is out and have apparently omitted the historical logos for the Cleveland Indians. The club has already dropped the "Chief Wahoo" image from it's branding. The game allows historical and fictional replays from past seasons. All MLB, MiLB, NL, IL, FED, etc teams are in the game. But only the Indians are missing the logos. There is a thread discussing that on their boards over there and it got ugly pretty quick as you might expect. Well, I can certainly see changing the logo in the modern era. It's actually worse than the Washington Redskins logo. And the ones from the 50's and before were even worse. But "sanitizing" historical logos in a game that sells itself as a historical sim seems kind of.... icky to me. Besides, the Indians were not even the worst of baseballs racist past. For 50 some odd years there was a team named "Atlanta Crackers". Does anyone need that term explained? There are numerous teams and logos from past years with Confederate references. And the Negro leagues names. Some of them were downright insulting to the players on them. Intentionally so. Sanitizing just the Indians seems off. Do it all or do none. The Atlanta/Milwaukee Braves guy is still in. I'd say do none. As someone pointed out over there the history is what it is. In the context of historical replay it's appropriate. Personally I didn't much care. It takes about 10 minutes to go find a logo and format it for the game. And this has nothing to do with the developers. The MLB owns the license and approves what logos get used and which ones don't. I'm just pointing this out because it struck me as interesting.

That would be the ruin of the rural ag states. Trump nearly broke with with his little trade war.

That was not baseball interjecting into politics. Or vice versa. That was about baseball on the field. That was fixing a problem inside the sport. This ASG business has nothing to do with baseball. Not the same thing.

Don’t get me wrong. They can express political opinions all they want. They can use their fame to advocate if they like. I am 100% in favor of that no matter what cause they choose to get behind. I just wish they would leave it out of the stadiums. Generally speaking political activism is not welcome in the workplace. Something like that is the best reserved for your own time. Major league baseball itself is certainly welcome to political activism if that’s what the owners and controllers of the franchise like. But it making the decisions they made they screwed over a lot of people and businesses who are counting on that revenue who had nothing to do with what the governor of Georgia and the state legislature did. Removing the All-Star game does not hurt the government of Georgia. It’s like me punishing you to protest something Hurlshot did. Of course the All-Star game belongs to major-league baseball and they can do with it whatever they like. I’m not saying they couldn’t I am saying maybe they shouldn’t.

Does anyone else wish we could keep sports out of politics and politics out of sports? Can we not have just this one thing that does not get infected with the political cancer? Can we have just one thing that we all agree is good?

Wow that is terrible. No you definitely don’t want her on steroids long term. Hopefully the doctor can come up with a solution. Fingers crossed.

Any Omega 3 supplement helps a dog deal with allergies. Dinovite is the best IMO But adding flax seed oil to her food will probably work just as well.

The political spectrum is a horseshoe not a straight line. The extremes on the left and on the right have more in common with each other than either does with the middle.

Aiming big, Biden is looking to restore faith in government Hyperbole and forum debate chatter aside, I do not like and I do not trust government. That is to say I do not trust the PEOPLE who make up government. I don't doubt many of them mean well. I do not doubt Joe Biden is a mostly honorable man ( I also think he figures a little clean graft now and again was his due as a Senator) and I'm sure he wants to do "good". The problem is despite all his experience and education he has no idea what is "good" in all situations for a complex country like the US. Some things are easy. Maximizing employment = good. Consistent tax policy = good. GDP increacing = good. Now, how to do that? That is the problem. Biden for example graduacted from college in 1968. His first job was cherking at a law firm, then worked as a public defender for a few months. He ran for office in 1970 and spent every day for the rest of his life in Public office or seeking it. He has never worked in a business. Never struggled to meet payroll. Never struggled to pay bills. He has no idea what is "good" for people who are in economic trouble. And no idea hos to achieve it if he did. What is "good" for a worker in Califonia might ruin a worker in South Dakota. Controlling the levers of Federal power is an oppotunity to do terrible and lasting harm all while trying to do "good" with little understanding.

Weird, random, interesting
What if somebody won the war of 1812 Cody at alternate history hub has released a new video. Like most of his work it’s pretty good. This one would be a particular interest to Canadians

Thanks, you guys are awesome! The DR is starting her on a new drug, Vetrotyl (something like that). It’s a cotisol blocker. It’s supposed to be taken with denemarin so now there will be two pills hidden in the peanut butter. I’m sure she won’t mind. She said we should notice a difference pretty quickly.

Taking Sunny back to the doctor today. She has a disease called Cushings Syndrome. The version she has affects her pituitary system. She has been taking a drug called denemarin for years but it seems like it's no longer effective. We switched to another one a few weeks ago but I think it's making her sick. Hopefully the vet has other options.

Details are coming out on the miserable POS that rammed a Capital Police officer with his car and charged others with a knife of all things. Turns out he was no political activist. Just a garden variety nutcase that believed everything he read online. It would be sad except he killed a man who was just doing his job. So to hell with him.

Military Thread: Humanity Hanging from a Cross of Iron
The way I see it the Marine Corps is returning to its roots. Beginning in the cold war and even in the war on terror it has morphed into something it was never intended to be. Basically a second army. Only smaller and not as well equipped. It was always intended to be a light highly mobile rapid reaction force. A weapon launched by the Navy.
