@Gromniryes I remember that one. There were a few others where he was entirely too predisposed towards the police powers for my taste. There was another one that both he and Alito were chomping at the bit to take. Don’t remember off the top of my head but it was two years ago. Two members of a gun club were cited for transporting their firearms somewhere other than the gun club. This was in New York City I believe they were taking them out of town. It was a very unreasonable law and it was ripe to be struck down. Anyway the city saw the writing on the wall and changed the law down themselves before the case ever went to the Supreme Court. Which pretty much rendered the entire case before the court moot. Which is exactly what they said when they turned it away. But Alito and Thomas were chomping at the bit to take it even after it have been pretty much nullified. I was a little put off by that. A judge shouldn’t go looking for cases to rule on. I think I pointed this out to you about a year ago but it strikes me that some of the “constructionist “have become somewhat activist of late. that said choosing which justice of nine you like is really is a relative comparison. I wouldn’t call any of them perfect. Although I am starting to like Goresuch more and more. He might be the one silver lining behind the cloud of the Trump administration.

By the way I’m surprised nobody has commented on all the terrible racist comments that are being directed at Senator Tim Scott after his rebuttal of the president speech the other night. He has been called “uncle Tim“ and “Oreo“. The people who are calling him this are Democrats. No, not voters actual Democrat party members and elected politicians. Once again showing the number one rule of the left. Dissenting opinions will not be tolerated. But they don’t argue the merits of the opinion. They shout down, insult, belittle, and denigrate the speaker. This is the kind of **** that Trump used to do. For the Democrats have been doing it forever.

Why? Just curious. He’s my favorite because he has been the most consistent advocate of the basic guaranteed rights. Individual liberty has no better friend on this court. In fact I’m pretty sure he’s the best champion of the separation of state and federal power the court has had in decades. Half of the judges act like they’ve never even read the 10th amendment. If you ever get a chance and have time his book “my grandfathers son“ is well worth reading. His life story is inspirational.

More speculation on Breyer’s retirement The way that man is being treated, and for that matter the way they talked about Ruth Bader Ginsberg, is pretty terrible. I strongly suspect a big number of leftists are wishing him dead if he does not want to retire. Biden has promised to nominate the first black female jurist as soon as an opening comes up. I really, really wish George W. Bush had nominated Janice Rogers Brown instead of Alito. I would’ve rammed her down all their throat‘s and damned them all as racist and sexist if they dared to oppose her. Such a lost opportunity. Alito is... not my favorite Justice. That would be Thomas. But not the worst on the court but not the best either.

The What Are You Reading thread (now with a simpler name)

I thought I knew quite a bit about the 1960 campaign. I was wrong. -
You do realize we’re talking about Nancy Pelosi here right? Not sure that description matches her at all. While I would be very surprised to hear she was involved in something illegal she has definitely dabbled in the unethical in her time in Congress. She has abused her position and made the taxpayers cover her travel cost home. She also loves having “conferences “ in posh locations on the taxpayer dime. She has also been less than truthful about this and other instances like the hair salon incident last year. None of it is illegal however. But it IS selfish.

Made grilled chicken (not one of mine) and string beans and a slice of watermelon. Simple is good. I cooked some gizzards for Sunny. She is finally learning to control herself and take them gently.

On to more interesting subject matter. this is a clear-cut case of the headline suggesting the story was going to be about something completely different Feds serve search warrant in Alaska for Nancy Pelosi’s laptop. is it just me or does that headline give the impression that Pelosi was the target of an investigation of some sort? I don’t think very highly of her either but I have to admit I was rather surprised at the notion. Of course if you read it it turns out it has absolutely nothing to do with her other than that the laptop belonged to her.

The first month of baseball is in the books. In case you missed anything here’s the recap:

I have an 11 AM appointment at Bradford‘s to get my first shot. Of course I will still be socially distancing after the second shot but it will be because I just don’t like people rather than that I’m afraid of what they might have.

LOL he tried to kill them with self-destruct at least four times that I remember

@Gromnir & @Bartimaeus Yes I AM kidding in that I don't want them to actually hang. I don't even want them to be hurt. But my contempt for politicians is not based on the actions, corrupt or otherwise, of any one person. Anyone who seeks power over their fellow humans has already demonstrated a tremendous character flaw: hubris. A political leader is (usually) not a scientist but they are fond of saying platitudes like "follow the science". Most of the time they know nothing, not even enough to know who is giving them sound advice and who isn't. They are not (usually) doctors. But they see themselves as somehow qualified to make medical decisions for people they will never even know by deciding policy they cannot understand. They can say they listen to "experts" but once again they don't even know enough to tell who IS an expert. I could go on with this but I think you get the idea. In the end they compensate for their lack of knowledge by doing whatever they want on the advice of the people who tell them what they wanted to hear all along. That is the advice of experts. That fact that advice is occasionally correct does not change my point. The biggest sin of politicians is that they imagine the lives of "the people" and the country and world they live in is a thing that can be shaped and controlled by their designs and wishes. That is, in the words of Hayek, the fatal conceit. Notice Gromnir, I did not even mention corruption and "self service" in the name of "public service". That is an entirely different conversation. Now the fix for both ignorance and corruption is the same. Shrink the power of the "state" and you limit the harm the people who control is can do. Well, the people who would like to see government power limited in any way are a small minority of the voters of this country. That argument has been had and lost many times. Even I'm not preaching that one anymore. And the folks who think that way have no representation in either major party. Nor do we have competent representation in any minor party. The best thing someone like me can hope for these days is gridlock. With any luck one of the Houses of Congress will be controlled by the Republicans after 2022. As long as the government is divided I no longer care who the President is.

NYPD canceled contact with Boston Dynamics over public backlash Hold on a sec. The robot is not armed. It has not and cannot suffocate, beat, brutalize, nor violate the rights of anyone. All it can do is observe. WTF is the problem here? This sounds like an upgrade over human cops IMO.

I have pretty well blown my whole morning researching on the web if Hector was a real man or purely mythical. Agamemnon was real. Being the king of one of the few Greek states that would eventually survive the bronze age somewhat intact makes that one easy. Priam was real according to the Hittites. They would know. They described him as restless and war like. They also said his heir was named Alexsandur not Hector or Paris. Paris and Helen and likely Menelaus were all mythical. Odysseus as King of Ithaca was a real man. But the historical figure would have lived and died long after the Trojan war took place if it ever did. But Hector is a bit of a mystery. It seems there is a Mycenaean account in Linear B of Hektor of Hatti being buried in Thebes. Same guy? Who knows. That would mean Achilles didn’t kill him end drag his body around the walls of the city. But since there was no Achilles it’s a pretty safe bet that didn’t happen anyway. has anybody ever looked into this? Does anybody know? @Hurlshotdo you know a thing or two about history. Any insight? Very curious.

Because your responses were factually incorrect. And you were mischaracterizing the argument. Solar and wind power are not going to replace traditional power generation. Maybe a couple of dumb ass politicians think so but in that profession ignorance is not only to be expected but often valued. Not what Rishae was saying

Ok, just FYI. Wind turbines produce AC. Solar produces DC. Wind power is a supplementary source. The turbines must reach a certain RPM before their output reaches a useable level. Whatever that is in the system you are looking at. In most wind farms you will have 20-30 turbines with their output in parallel with respect to each other. This is because of Kirchoffs Law for voltage. All drops in a closed loop circuit equal zero. No matter how many loads. Voltage on all parallel paths will be the same. The paths will have a monitor circuit that will switch the circuit “on” once the turbines are up to speed and the loads are likely on the primary side of a series of step up transformers. The secondary side will take the higher induced voltage and connect it to a distant load (municipal power utility most likely) and the electrons will do their stuff. The utility connects the wind farm output in parallel with their utility output (because our old buddy Kirchhoff) the municipality will draw on both sources. This lowers the demand on the utility that is presumably burning fossil fuels to create power. Solar produces DC. Those panels will be multiple circuits in series configuration because most produce a very small amount of power. In series circuit voltage is additive. To get to 1000 VDC you will likely need 500 panels in series at peak efficiency. Now you are right that solar power is inconstant. That is why , most of the time, solar power charges a battery network that in turn feeds an inverter. As I have been pontificating on at length in the past two pages inverters are not terribly efficient. The reason why if anyone is curious as their output is not a sine wave. It is a square wave. So filtering and wave shaping is going to be a major part of the system. Guard Dogs law of circuits clearly states “the more s—t you have in the circuit the more losses you incur.” Anyway that 70.7 is not some number I pulled out of my butt. Anyway the theory is the batteries supply the power under constant charge from the solar network. Of course the battery voltage is going to drop. So at some point a low-voltage disconnect circuit will trigger and it will shut down the output of the battery plant until it is charged back up again. Neither of these so-called green options are capable of running all the time and neither is capable of being a primary power source. That’s why I said they are both supplemental sources.

Trust me you made the right decision. I know from reading your comments there’s a lot of tedium in what you do. But EE is a seriously under appreciated discipline. Computer/Software engineering is the best field for now. EE is yesterday’s big thing. If I could do it over again I would’ve chosen civil engineering. Those jobs don’t pay a lot of money but there are a hell of a lot of them. And it’s far easier to parlay those skills into other opportunities. With EE and a specialization in RF networks I was the definition of a one trick pony.

Sad to hear this. His book “Carrying the Fire” is required reading at Guard Dog U. I believe only six men who have seen the entirety of the earth. McDivott from Apollo 9 is still with us but it was the LEM checkout flight and stayed in earth orbit.

Problematic. In a straight Ohmic circuit as long as R stays constant current increases proportionately to voltage to infinity. But, based on the type, size, length, material, load demand, and other variables all circuits becomes non-ohmic at some point. That means resistance becomes variable. when R becomes variable you go from this: to this there are good reasons why Westinghouse won the current war and not Edison.
