Politics and Statesmenship: A Forum Special Report

Well you weren't forced to join the army. Who said it was for free? I got paid. And you could choose what you wanted to do. Plenty of options and you could apply for lots of stuff as I said. And by whose definition is it slavery. Yours? That's not really reliable source material. Because dubious reputation and so on... The PERIOD doesn't seem to work - you are still talking about it. Might as well stop shouting PERIOD. Unless it's a periodic period of course... Arguing with Volo is a suicide mission! -

You were not forced to do military service. You could do something else. Only important thing is that you spend one year working for your country or your fellow citizens. If you were sick or not fit to serve in the military you didn't have to do anything. Same if you were the third son (and the other two already served). What about community service? Being forces to work or face jail time? Slavery? What about compulsory education? We have it in Germany and many other european countries. Is that slavery? I mean you force the kids to go to school. What about being forced to pay taxes? Slavery? Or is that all already SJW Nazism? Taxation is theft. Legalized theft. Pay us or men with guns will kidnap you and lock you in a cage or maybe kill you. The draft is slavery. Legalized slavery. Serve us or men with guns will kidnap you and lock you in a cage or maybe kill you. This "compulsory" civil service that is being suggested is the same thing. The word compulsory is incompatible with liberty. It is incompatible with freedom. Now, in order to live in a functioning society we all have to accept some limitations on liberty. So it really becomes a question of where that line is. For me that line ends somewhere well before forced servitude. Having served in the military during wartime and knowing many Vietnam vets from a practical matter conscription is a terrible idea. It leads to a demoralized and all around ineffective military. Military service is not easy. Combat service is even harder. You have to WANT to be there. If the manpower of the US Military is insufficient to fight some new war the politicians feel like starting perhaps that is a war that should not be fought. In times of crisis Americans have voluntarily responded even when there was a draft. After 9-11, after Pearl Harbor, hell even after Fort Sumter there were large jumps in voluntary enlistments. I enlisted in 1989. We were at peace then but I knew what I was signing up for and was willing to do it. Gifted1 & Shady Sands right here on this board did the same among others. Heck Shady enlisted after 9-11 IIRC so there was almost no doubt in his mind where he was going. That is the kind of man you WANT in the military. Not someone who is there because the other alternative was prison. As for this "civil service" no one in this country owes a goddamned thing to anyone else that they are not willing to give. They are going to take your money, no way around that. But they are not going to take your time, you presence, away from where you want to be. It all sounds like a bunch of BS to me that charity groups like Habitat for Humanity (a group I support and have worked with in the past) do a much better job of. But if it's voluntary this government run boondoggle, then it will be tolerable. -

The love of individual liberty does not abide in the democrat party. They are party of "mandatory", collectivism, and "for your own good". The party of Jefferson and Jackson has turned their backs on them forever. And that is a pity. -

An impeachment would be the ultimate act of self immolation. He's facing the electorate next year, that will be trial enough. If the Democrats nominate another repulsive and undetectable candidate or he somehow finds his way back into office we're getting the government we deserve. I can't name one of the... what 16 or 17 democrats is it now that I'd like better than him. Like I said before, there are no saints in hell. I know I'm not voting for any of them. F--k them all. -
I was up all night working on a project. I'm making a new kitchen table and two chairs. I've always wanted to try my hand at furniture making. I suck at carpentry for the most part but I figured maybe I just need practice. So I found some plans on pintrest and taking a crack at it. It's nice but simple in an elegant kind of way. It would be a lot easier if I had a real powered wood lathe but I really want to do this by hand. Besides they start at $500 and go up from there.

I was reading a bit more myself. There is a whole lot of things he WANTED to do but met with refusals or just failed. One thing is crystal clear, calling him dishonest is an understatement. Like I said... there is a shocker. -

I wouldn't really call Bernie a Democrat anymore than I'd call Ron Paul a Republican. No... just LOL no. Socially they have some similarities. Economically, not even in the same universe. Remember Bernie is they guy who though people waiting in bread lines is a good thing. -

Trump Derangement Syndrome is a thing. But most "mainstream media" however you define that, could easily just print "Four legs good, two legs bad" over and over and still convey just as much information. The only difference being who has four legs and who has two. Anyway after reading some of the Muller report and many summaries of parts I've come to the conclusion that although there may have been no crime there WAS bad behavior. Shocking right? Imagine the surprise of finding out the people you always thought were pieces of s-t actually are. Anyway supposedly Barr is going to "look into" the Clinton / Fusion GPS thing and the FBI attempt to scuttle Trump's campaign. Nothing will come of that. Not that there isn't something there. There probably is. Nothing ever does come of these things. -
How much sleep do you get and how do you feel?
Guard Dog replied to BruceVC's topic in Way Off-Topic
If you suffer from Insomnia what do you find works best to resolve this, also do you sleep with your windows open because living outdoors this may help with fresh air? I am currently staying at my Dads place in a outer house and I am not suppose to open windows because of the risk of crime. Normally I prefer fresh air but at the moment there is a ceiling fan but I dont think its better than fresh air Right now I keep the windows open all the time. The weather has been beautifully cool. I haven't run my AC since October. Real soon though it will be too hot for that. As for how I deal with it I don't. Not effectively anyway. Meletonin works but you build up a resistance to it pretty quick. Two Benadryl chased by three fingers of good bourbon is also effective. But I'm not a big fan of using whiskey as a sedative. It leads to bad habits. Mostly if I can't sleep I try to use the time productively. -

I haven't paid Bernie much attention but I don't remember him being particularly vocal about gun control. I would never vote for him anyway because hell will freeze into a solid block before I ever vote for any Democrat. -

Insomnia is a real problem for me. I don't have it all the time but when I do I have in spurts of days and sometimes weeks. Otherwise I sleep pretty well. When I was running my own business it was not unusual to work round the clock. 5-7 hours is normal when I can shut my brain off... or drown it with booze. -

You do not. We are all safest then they are all trying to screw each other over. Give one tribe of rats total dominion over the sewer and they will start screwing us. Sometimes I wonder if the President needs to be the opposite party of the one currently in power in Congress in order for oversight to happen properly. It'd certainly look strange when Congress flips parties mid-term though. Then again, both parties go rabidly barking up the wrong tree (or just rabidly barking) at times. I'm mostly thinking about Benghazi and the Republicans incessant push to tear her down. Give me a House solidly in the hands of one party, a Senate solidly in the hands of the other and I won't even worry so much about who the President is. -

On a more serious note Joaquin Phoenix is a great actor but he's got his work cut out for him following this guy! -

I would prefer predictable. What we have is actually pretty stable. There is a lot of sound and fury and plenty of light from the burning dumpster to read the Washington Post telling us all how much everything sucks. But his worst impulses are blocked by the House and the Courts or his own hubris and incompetence. I'm sleeping a lot better with the House in the hands of the Democrats and the Senate in the hands of the Republicans. IMO that is the ideal split. We do best when they all neutralize each other. And i'd still rather have his judges over anything Hillary f-----g Clinton would have appointed. -

Gromnir you know the problem with dismissing fumbling incompetence? A bad outcome not the product of malice, is still a bad outcome. As far as undermining confidence in the outcomes of elections, the D & R have been doing that themselves. They could return to civility at any time and effectively neutralize any such attempt from Russia or anyone else. Not holding my breath. The name of the game now is win at any cost because there is so much power at stake. Like I've been saying for damn near 20 years, THAT is the problem. Take away the power of the government and you solve all your problems at once. You probably create others but you have to pick your poison. The less control over our lives and country our government has the less we have to worry about who is controlling our government. But you know what Grom, it doesn't matter. We're cooked and done. That it isn't imminent does not make it less inevitable. Unless the next executive and congress begins to deal with spending in some way that does not involve currency inflation, and God knows I don't see that happening, then we as a country are f----d. Crypto currency is a whole lot of nothing important right now but it will become very important in the semi-near future as an inflation proof alternative for international trade. The only thing that has saved us is the prominence of the dollar. Take that away and we will not survive the fools who think they run this place. -

What if it's all true? What if Trump DID obstruct justice, the FBI, DID try to "take him out" the Clinton campaign DID buy phony intel from Russia, Obama DID know everything about all of it and did nothing? I find that the most believable of all. That are all a pack of s--t covered rats infesting the same sewer trying t tell you how much the other rats stink! In other news Pete Buttigieg is floating the idea of "mandatory" public service for everyone. Either in the military or some other yet-to-be-created-but-will-cost-a-country-with-out-of-control-spending-a-f-----g-lot organization. Boy the Democrats are really fond of the word "mandatory" aren't they? But it's nice to see them circling back around to their roots. The party of secession and slavery is proposing slavery in 2020. -
The gorilla on the left is about to whip it out and take a leak.

This really sucks. I know you'll make the right decision one way or the other. I'm just sorry for both of you that you have to.
